Reality Strikes Again

Monday, July 11, 2005

Bio_ty Baristaville makes it to another reality TV show. This time, it's Rock Star INXS, premiering tonight at 9 p.m on CBS.

Viewers get to see and hear excerpts from the performances of all 15, including Neal Carlson, 29, a singer and administrative assistant from Queens who performs the Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar"; Ty Taylor, 36, an actor-singer from Montclair, N.J., who looks like a cross between Usher and Mr. T; and Deanna Johnston, 36, a Canadian who summons the ghost of Janis Joplin on "Piece of My Heart."

Will Ty become Baristaville's next Anwar? Will producers try and get him to lose the mohawk? Stay tuned...

Mohawks are so 5 minutes ago.

Janis Joplin is soooo over-rated

MICHAEL HUTCHENCE LIVES ! ! !

OMG It's Tyrone Taylor! He was the best singer/dancer/actor in our class. He seemed destined for a career in musical theater or even Broadway. I had no idea he'd gone into music. He was certainly not the mohawk type in school that's for sure.

Good for him!

Actually, Miss Martta, Mohawks are so 250 or so years ago. And so upstate NY to boot.

Ah, Mohawk brings back memories of barfbag flights to upstate NY as a kid on Mohawk & Agony (Allegeny) Airlines, the old twin engine roller coaster props. I'd sit there white knuckled wishing I was in a sleeper car on the Lackawanna Phoebe Snow......

PAZ - in the '60s I used to commute between Westchester County Airport and Boston on Mohawk Airlines - DC-3's. I can remember going up to the counter at Logan and buying my $10 standby ticket. When the agent handed it to me she said with a smile: "Here is your passport to danger!"

But we digress. I think the world really needs more reality shows. The current state of reality is "b-o-o-r-r-r-r-ing," as JoAnn Worley would say.

Even with the mohawk, Ty was superb last night, giving a galvanizing performance. He was also very articulate in the commentary sound bites. However, on the show, he is billed as being from Los Angeles.

I watched too, just to check out Ty. He was good, though lots of others were good too. Man, this show makes American Idol look really, really lame. It was nice seeing a music competition with rock music and authentic rockers!

The show was fabulous last night - only 3 of the 15 were clunkers (the very three that were separated out last night).

It was like watching drunken karaoke singers "audition" for a bar band. The screechiness, the bad stage moves, the dumb comments and, worst, the attempts by people most likely raised in the suburbs to sound like 65-year-old black men from the Mississippi Delta, it was an excruciating experience. Made me miss Simon Cowell.

And how desperate must the remaining members of INXS be to agree to this gimmick? And how presumptuous, given that their own basic reason for musical being is long dead (and has a Bob Geldof connection, in that he adopted the child of his ex-girlfriend with Michael Hutchence, after she killed herself)? Also, those guys looked pretty pampered and long removed from rock 'n' roll (the ascots were a giveaway), so does anyone truly believe they could make a "comeback" for anything longer than one quick money-grubbing "reunion" tour?

Well, I have to say that I haven't watched much of this INXS show, but flipping through the channels tonite and seeing Ty's face on the screen brought me back 15 years. Yes I did go to school with TY and I'm so happy to see him now. He even sings better now than he did all those years ago.

GO TY!
