Deputy Chief Perry Mayers at the Montclair PD informed us of the untimely death of Detective Carlos Wormley yesterday morning, May 30, after a long fight with diabetes. Wormley, who served on the Montclair police force for 16 years, was also a life long resident of Montclair. He was 47 years old.
Detective Wormley became a member of the Montclair Police Department on August 17, 1990 after serving for 13 years as a volunteer member of the Montclair Deputy Police. Detective Wormley was most recently assigned to the Juvenile Aid Bureau. He also served as a firearms instructor for the Police Department and was the recipient of numerous awards for service and valor.
Det. Wormley is survived by his daughters Nyia K. Wormley and Jade Clarice Wormley, two sisters Delma Wormley Lacy and Wanda R. Wormley, his father Milton J. Wormley Sr., and a first cousin, Marion L. Parker. Funeral arrangements are being made at the Martin Funeral Home, on Elm Street, Montclair.

Rest in peace. Sounds like he was a great guy and a real asset to our community.
Carlos Wormley had the personality of a giant. He will be sorely missed for his warmth, generosity and most of all, his great sense of humor. My brother and dad worked along side Calos for many years and there was never a dull moment! Carlos, Montclair will miss you!
I’m sorry to hear about the loss of this kind, funny, and good man. Rest in peace, Carlos.
The Montclair Police and Fire Departments, originally scheduled to play a charity basketball game to help defray the cost of Carlos’ medical bills, will still play the game, now sadly in his honor.
Please come out to Montclair High School on Friday, June 9, to honor someone who was truly a gift to Montclair and one of the good guys in town.
Damn! Damn!
I had a feeling in my gut when I saw that title
Decorated Montclair Cop Dead At 47 that it was Carlos.
I knew him for many years
as a friend. Someone you can talk to one on one. someone you could confide it .
There was a charity basketball game coming up on June 9th for Carlos. MPD vs MFD. I was waiting for the Calendar for that week so that I could post it and let people know.
Tell ya it’s true Only The Good Die Young.
Bye Carlos.
A very, very nice man. What a shame.
I’m heartbroken to hear this. I met Officer Wormley when I moved to this town 15 years ago after an altercation between my husband and a neighbor. He was very philosophical, convincing him not to escalate the problem. How very different he was from the police officers in Brooklyn!
We were the same age. We got to know several members of his family. He was the one who finally convinced my son to stop wearing those big baggy pants. I will always love him for that!
I knew Carlos from the Y. He was a gentle giant of a man. My heart goes out to his family.
My deepest sympathy to the Wormley Family. I spoke to Carlos last year about a Soul Stomper reunion for the 4th of July parade. We had a great chat about the good old days at M.H.S. He was still so cool. I will never forget the Soul Stompers. They were the high light of the 70s!
This is a good time to remind people of the Tour De Cure:

Carlos mentored many young
students, including my
son;and showed them what
it really means to be a
man.He was a role model,
proactive crime fighter, community activist
and all-around nice
guy.
I am so sorry that he
did not go gently into
the night. It’s time for a
youth recreational center
to be dedicated in his
name, and honor his
memory.
He did so much for
police-community relations; becoming a friend to all rather than an enemy
with authority. He’ll be
patroling the Pearly
Gates in his muscle shirts
for eternity.

A few years ago, I was running through Immaculate Conception Cemetary and found a man hanging from a tree. A passerby called 911 and Officer Wormley responded. Needless to say the fellow who called 911 and I were both very shaken by the experience, but Officer Wormley got everything under control (the man who tried to hang himself lived). Before he left, Officer Wormley gave me his card in case I wanted to talk about the incident. He didn’t mean “talk about the case” — a detective took care of that — he meant “talk about how you’re feeling.” That’s just the kind of guy he was. A great loss to all who knew him, and to Montclair.
Carlos you were a dear friend a wonderful, kind and considerate guy…so dearly loved. Don’t worry you are now cradled in God’s arms smiling down upon us. Rest peacefully dear brother..
