Happy Memorial Day to everyone. Get out and enjoy the weekend, find some good bargains at yard sales. Tell us if you are cleaning up or cleaning out. List your weekend yard sale here. Don't forget to tell us the day, time, address, and what's special about the stuff you're getting rid of. (You want us to show up, don't you?)

Aside from the bbqs, and garage sales, let's also take a minute to reflect on those who have died in service to our country.

The unknown soldier lies on the battlefield.
The unknown soldier, his eyes are filled with steel.
The unknown soldier will rise to fight again.
In the war that never ends.

He has no banner, he has no next of kin.
He has nobody that will remember him.
He lost his horse, it's oft and run away.
Perhaps they'll fight another day.

He was a young man when he went to fight the war.
He didn't know, 'how come?' or 'what for?'.
All he knew was his pride in being a man.
Now he's made his final stand.

An unknown soldier lies on the battlefield
An unknown soldier his eyes are filled with steel
An unknown soldier will rise to fight again.
In the war that never ends.

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

(Charles M. Province)

Find the cost of freedom,
buried in the ground
Mother earth will swallow you, lay
your body down

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

In the town where you live do you know who the soldiers were who paid for your freedom?

Do you know their names?

Do you know where they lived?

do you know who sent them off to die? and why?

Take your kids to any one of the local cemetaries and plant a small flag on the grave of a soldier.

I wonder who they are
The men who really run this land
And I wonder why they run it
With such a thoughtless hand

What are their names
And on what streets do they live
I'd like to ride right over
This afternoon and give
Them a piece of my mind
About peace for mankind
Peace is not an awful lot to ask

The Wall Street Journal

"Here's a Memorial Day quiz: 1. Who is Jessica Lynch? Correct. She's the Army private captured, and later rescued, in the early days of the war. 2. Who is Leigh Ann Hester? Come on. The Kentucky National Guard vehicle commander was awarded a Silver Star last year for fighting off an insurgent attack on a convoy in Iraq. The first woman to receive a Silver Star since World War II, and the first woman ever to receive one for close combat. If you don't recognize Sergeant Hester's name, that's not surprising. While Private Lynch's ordeal appears in some 12,992 newspaper and broadcast reports on the Factiva news service, Sergeant Hester and her decoration for extraordinary valor show up in only 162."

I have to help a friend plan a yard sale.

Any advice anyone?

How about a new thread for Memorial Day/Weekend observances ?
NEXT weekend should be HUGE for yard sales.

"15 Family Garage sale !!!

Is this a joke? Why would 15 families go through the trouble of putting on a yard sale for one day, til only 1pm? Com'on! Brave it out til 4pm at least! It's only one day!

Posted by fussyhostess | May 26, 2006 9:23 PM

We did a block yard sale and toughed it out til 4 pm -- should have ended it earlier! Most yard sale customers came in the morning looking for their bargains.
