World Cup fever is gripping soccer-mad Baristaville, well, sort of. As Montclair's Stephen Colbert put it last night, "It is the metric system of sports...I'm on the edge of my coma."
Over at Watchung Plaza's popular hangout, Soccer Stop, on the other hand, the owner tells us "it's all people are talking about" - and their entire stock of USA and Mexico jerseys is sold out. What's left of Brazil, Portugal, and Italy team shirts, World Cup tees and trading cards are big sellers. You can enjoy the action at a few local watering holes with other soccer fans - and a couple of brewskis. Egan and Sons will be showing all England and U.S.A. games. The Office Beer Bar & Grill is showing all ABC broadcast games on three mega screens. We even heard that Plaza Shoppe at Watchung Plaza will have their T.V. tuned to the matches.
New Jersey's even got a decent representation of soccer champs participating in the games: Coach Glenn Myernick of Trenton, Gregg Berhalter of Tenafly, Claudio Reyna of Springfield, and Tim Howard of North Brunswick are all part of the U.S. squad.
For a complete game schedule, look here. Tell us if you're throwing your own World Cup Party, or if you know of other World Cup buzz in Baristaville...

Really people...be honest...is there anything more boring than watching soccer? Yawn.
I actually happen to enjoy it. It's much faster-paced than baseball (which I also happen to like) or football (which I happen to dislike).
Anyone know any bars tuned into the Germany games?
Yes, Ice. The "Iraq's most wanted terrorist dead" thread.
IM,
LOL...perfectly stated.
Iceman,
you are so typically "red" and "narrow-minded" your predictability isn't amusing anymore. There is a whole world out there, by the way.
Yeah Ice, baseball (and I'm a season ticket holder)
4 posts, not quite the record, but close.
I agree Ice as long as you add football and rugby to your statement
Germany / Costa Rica was on ESPN earlier today. Caught only a few minutes at the sub shop. Check ESPNs web site - there are a lot of games on ESPN, ESPN2 and some on ABC.
Conan,
You weren't in my sub shop were you, by some coincidence?
We had the game on.
hiding,
'red' but certainly not narrow minded like the politically correct censors on the left. what do u call the students at the new school who wouldn't let senator mccain speak?...his address was going to be on intolerance. yet those bastions of diversity and 'liberal values' wouldn't let him exercise his right to free speech. the hypocracy should make you feel so 'icky' that you want to shower off the shame.
Yeah, I saw about five minutes of the game at a deli in the city while getting lunch. Germany won 4-2.
The correct spelling is "you", not "u"
I think almost all sports are boring to watch except running..:-)
However, I DO get a kick out of watching the crazy soccer fans. We just came back from the Portugal Day celebration in Newark and it was a blast. They are gearing up for the big parade there tomorrow at 3 PM. My BF & I are doing the 5K run in the morning.
So much for Baristaville being the soccer powerhouse of Essex county. We're talking the World Cup here and all we get get is a collection of inane comments, facile polarizing and pretentious opinions. The request was give us your World Cup buzz and all we get is a somnolent hum. Who recognizes the occassion for the epic it is? Who has intelligent comment on what will transpire? Who's having the WC parties? Where are the best bars to watch the matches? From what I can see from previous comments Baristaville is a hub of sports parochialism!
zzz-zzz-zzz
"Where are the best bars to watch the matches?"
It's not Baristaville, but Grasshopper off the Green in Morristown keeps their flatscreen TVs tuned to the matches, and apparently they were getting in their cups for the World Cup by 9:00am this morning.
"We're talking the World Cup here and all we get get is a collection of inane comments, facile polarizing and pretentious opinions."
Such as this one?
There was quite a good turnout at Egan's for the England match on Saturday morning. Plus, they served free breakfast! Hope to get there again for more matches.
I was disappointed that the Frankfurt police broke up a confrontation between British soccer fans, singing good old WWII-vintage tunes like "We'll hang out our washing on the Siegfried Line," and their Teutonic lager lout counterparts the other day. There is still something atavistically invigorating about seeing the Germans get theirs, and I'm sure the Brits would have delivered in the best Arsenal or Man United tradition. Having attended some Premiere League games in my time, I can testify that while watching soccer strikes me as a wheeze, being in the stands for a game can be a terror-wracked experience.
Davey,
you wrote:
"The request was give us your World Cup buzz and all we get is a somnolent hum."...that's what it is...have u tried to watch this stuff on tv? The rest of the world can't force us to buy into the hype.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Crank,
Dunno - the sub shop I was in was Truzzi's in Fairfield - recently purchased by a Middle Easterner and they were watching the cup. Where is your place - I would be glad to give you the business (no pun intended):)
US got their butt kicked by Czech Republic today...3-0. Ugh.
I am looking for a good junior soccer league for my sons. I know Montclair has one but I'm not sure what age you can start a child in the program. Do you have to be a resident of Montclair to have your child in the league? Does Bloomfield have a junior soccer league? How does one get involved in coaching?
Ah, the beauty of the Montclair Watercooler, recommendations from your neighbors:
