Dogs Get Their Due

Dog Mom writes in to announce that the Essex County Dog Park in South Mountain Reservation opened today at noon.

I was tipped off by an acquaintance in South Orange and drove by for a look-see. A tent and a podium was set up, presumably for the opening ceremonies. The workers there said that it was opening officially today. It’s really gorgeous.

But will it meet the dogs’ approval? Bark here with your review.

I can’t bring my dog to dog parks because all he wants to do is smell the other dogs urine and roll around in it.

  4. POSTED BY Highlander  |  July 31, 2006 @ 2:30 pm

That’s why I’ll stick to cats. At least I know it’s their urine I smell. If that makes a difference.

Don’t bring him to Eagle Rock.
He’ll be rolling in deer excrement.

Where excatly is this in South Mtn? I googled it to no avial!

  7. POSTED BY Dog Mom  |  July 31, 2006 @ 2:46 pm

One would think that animals with such keen senses of smell would not be able to bear smelling so foul. A friend once posed this question to me and I thought it was worth a little investigation.
Apparently, it’s instinctual for them to roll in smelly things. Once hunters, their instinct is to disguise their scent from prey.

  8. POSTED BY katie  |  July 31, 2006 @ 2:48 pm

He’s like 6 lbs though so it’s not hard to give him a bath. I could imagine a bigger dog rolling in another dogs urine would be a pain to wash.

It’s in a couple of towns, namely Millburn, West Orange, and South Orange. The dog park is off of South Orange Ave. There are signs.
I think the best way to go from Montclair would be Harrison Ave. toward West Orange to Main Street, left on Main to Northfield. Immediate left onto Valley Rd. Follow Valley to South Orange Ave. Right on SO Ave. and the entrance about a mile or two up on the left.

I agree with the Watessing poster. If you really want to prentend you’re living in NYC for a while, Watessing’s trying its damndest to accommodate you. Chess tables, weed guys, early morning tai chi… it’s all good.

I’m looking for a Tai Chi class- when d people do Tai Chi in Watessing?

  18. POSTED BY todd  |  August 01, 2006 @ 9:32 am

Not just tai chi and chess in Watsessing. You also get Cricket matches and Lawn Bowling on the weekends. Walk through that park on a pleasant Sunday and you would swear you’re not in NJ anymore.

In a nutshell: there has been an outbreak of rabies in China so govt. officials have ordered the killing of hundreds of thousands of dogs there. This is bad enough but they are beating dogs to death on the street, even those being walked by their owners. Go to the link to learn more.

When I was a teenager back in the dark ages I thought the most romantic songs were "Don't Worry, Baby" and "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys. But my romantic life back then was more in tune with "Love Stinks" by the J. Geils Band.
