So, how much does it cost to have one of these trees removed (when it lands in your own yard and you can’t count on the town to take care of it for you)? We have a major tree down in our yard and have an estimate of over $1,500 to have it removed — I expected it to be expensive, but I can’t help but think someone’s taking advantage here. Does it really cost that much to haul away a tree that’s already down?

I imagine it would cost more than normal to have it removed now. If the tree company is paying overtime because they are working long hours, for example.
Is it all down or mostly down?
I paid $2000 to have a large tree removed (from the standing position).
(Over my neighbor’s garage, so they had to be careful)
But, getting the tree down did seem like less work than cutting it up, chipping, loading and hauling.
$1500 seems a tad high but not vastly so IMHO.

I paid $1600 when my 60ft maple tree was hit by lightening and fell covering my backyard. That was 8 years ago.

Does anyone know, if a large portion of a tree from a neighbor’s backyard fell into my yard, is that neighbor responsible for removal of the debris from my yard? Or am I stuck with the bill, even though it was his poorly maintained tree that went down? Thanks

Well, $1600 ? But I gather we have a huge demand in the area.
would it be worthwhile to get estimates from companies far more out? Or considering doing it yourself?

We thought of having a CHAIN SAW PARTY but decided that it was too much trouble and that our liability would be too large if someone were injured.
I assumed that since it was our tree that we were responsible for the part that landed on our neighbor’s property. It never occurred to me to question it and we cleared that portion ourselves since it took a week for the tree service to get to the rest of the fallen giant.
It’s a lot of work and you need someplace to put the cut up branches and trunk.
The tree service brought a huge shedder. They shredded on the spot and carted the large trunk pieces away.
We got 3 bids before deciding who to use.
I did call our home owner’s insurance carrier and we were not covered. They said that they would have paid for removal If the tree had touched our house in any way.
(the $1600 post above is mine)

The tree service posting for business above is:
    Gaia Gardens
    198 Lorraine Ave
    Montclair, NJ,
    973-495-3755
Does anyone have any experience with them?

Does “tree removal” include the stump or is that a separate service? And what of all the craters left behind, will they be filled with dirt and covered with sod?

you’ll be lucky to have the trunk taken away. Don’t ask for the moon.

We just got quote #2 for the removal of our downed tree: $4,200. The first estimate of $1,500 is looking like quite the bargain, now!

I hope he buys you dinner first because he is trying to %^&* you.
Yeah, the first estimate is looking real good.

this may sound a bit odd, but there is an artist that comes to mind, who always attends the Sussex County Fair.
He has a collection of chain saws, and carves trunks of trees into marvelous sculptures. Of course, there is also the carving of trunks into chairs. I’ve always wanted a set of those.
It may be interesting to learn if either he (or other artisans) would come out to sculpt, or if he would be interesting in taking the wood for his upcoming work/demos…. tho, I would think for his demos, he’d probably be using particular varieties of trees/wood.

Size does matter, but $1500 is a bit high for a tree that is already down, but not insane. They should be able to take care of that in a couple hours with a normal size crew.
I’ve found that tree service estimates vary widely. Estimates for removing a large branch that was still somewhat attached to a gum tree last year were $1200, $900 and $300. The $300 guys took care of it in under an hour and they were very nice (Happy Tree Service I think).
$4200 is completely unreasonable and hopefully you’ll tell us here what company gave you that estimate so we all know who not to call in the future.

My dad and I were amazed at all the damage we saw on Wednesday. My friend who takes pictures for the Star Ledger , called me early in the morning to tell me where the worse of the damage was. Being back in NJ for a visit has sure been interesting !!. My thoughts go out to all the families that had damage to their homes, cars etc. I pray no one was hurt during the storm.

We used a company called Davey tree to trim (Level II) our 40 ft oak tree in our backyard last year at a cost of about $900. Glad we took care of it- withstood the storm. They were prompt and professional and the cost was half of other companies. Tree trimming and tree removal estimates are all over the map, sort of what I found with driveway grading and paving estimates.
