All Smoke, No Mirrors

Wednesday, August 2, 2006

There'll be no cutting, coloring or crimping at BangZ hair salon on Church Street today, where patrons apparently had a harrowing experience during yesterday's fire. Especially those who were getting highlights.

I work at BangZ and what a fiasco it was today. At one point they weren't letting us exit the building in any of our exists the grate in front of our salon was going to blow. They sent everyone evacuating and running down the street but us and finally didn't let us out until 4:20 and it seemed like war of the worlds out there. My apologies to any of our clients who might have been in the salon at that time, especially those with color that had to be evacuated. Hopefully power is restored as quickly as possible.

Other closings/inconveniences and helpful tips:

  • The Montclair-Glen Ridge-Nutley Red Cross will be a cooling center until 4 pm for those without air conditioning. 63 Park Street. Call the Red Cross if you need dry ice for cooling needs. 973.746.1800

  • Bloomfield Ave. is still closed to traffic from South Mountain Ave. to Willow Street.

  • The area right around Church Street is expected to not have power restored until late today.

  • The Borough of Glen Ridge has opened the Ridgewood Avenue Senior Community Center, 226 Ridgewood Avenue, as a cooling center from 7 am to 4:30 pm Wednesday and Thursday.

  • If you have more vital info, add it to the comments.

Evacuating color -- is that sort of like herding cats?

I am just imagining all of the ladies with fried/ over processed roots that we will be seeing around town. Hee hee..

Does anyone know why Bloomfield Ave was closed from the museum down to around Park St. today?
I was not at the scene yesterday afternoon, so I don't know if this is just a continuation or something new.

Don't worry...we didn't just let our clients who may have had chemicals processing just walk away. We accomodated them at another business. I was only sending out my apologies to those who may have been inconvenienced by it.

Thanks for the mention. The Red Cross is indeed open today as a cooling center, but requests for dry ice should go to the Montclair Health Dept. (973) 509-4970.

    Debby:

Does this mean Whole Foods is still closed?

There was quite a traffic jam last night during rush hour on the Verona side of the "hill." Although I was headed to Whole Foods Market, I had to "settle" for Kings. (Which, in all fairness, has totally revamped their store, in order to compete with the new West Orange WFM opening this fall.) Kings now offers an impressive selection of organic products, with more promised to come.

    ("Hizzah" for consumer-driven change!)

Still, I want my WFM! Please advise any news re: same?

    Stacey,
That's good to hear. It reminds me of a time we had fire alarm at work. i was taking a shower in the gym, and was told to leave immeadiately. So I had to run out with just a towel on and change in my car!

    Posted by kim | August 2, 2006 11:29 AM

    Er, that's actually "huzza"
(so much for the archaic colonial spelling lesson).

I think King's store management hired someone to overload Montclair's power grid to cause the "accidental" detours to their renovated store ...

Does that now compromise the hairdresser-client priviledge? I thought only the hairdresser was to know for sure. Now various denizens of church street are in the folicoscenti.

A shame that most people could've used this piece for the morning commute and it did n't get posted until 10:27 a.m.!!! Now also would be a great time to press PSE&G and town hall ConEd-style to see when the power will be back up in full. This outage and street closure means big dollars for local businesses and, while cooling centers are a nice touch, most of your readers are going to without goods and services today and may want to know when they will have access to them again.

You get what you pay for.

Realtime traffic reporting for commuters is still just a pipedream (well, for car drivers, anyway).

Imagine....oh, f--k, no Starbucks; oh my, no Whole Foods Market for a day or so! What to do here in Montclair?
Is this all that matters; WFM, the gym, too frequently colored hair?

What about the fortunate lack of injuries in this inconvenience, the decimation in the Mid East and the obvious climactic/environmental changes?

As for me, the morning commute was impossible; there was no appropriate information on any web site or News 12 New Jersey which is sadly slow in catching up with real time.

And I will live without WFM, even if it takes a few days. Perish(ibles) forbid if we would have to go to Pathmark!

Ikanwrite: thanks for calling attention to the safety and political aspects of this discussion before ROC did! And what about the role that religion has played in this matter (no Mel Gibson jokes)?

I just spoke with the Montclair police and health departments (Wednesday, 2:45pm) and got the same answer with respect to (1) power being restored and (2) streets being opened (specifically, Bloomfield, Church and Glenridge) and got the same answers: "not anytime soon." I can't even get the telephones at the Chase Bank on Bloomfield Avenue to ring. I think the entire day is going to be a "wash."

I've found the wcbs traffic page on the internet to be very current. They had the Bloomfield Ave closed story up by 330-345 yesterday.

If you have web access, the NJ DOT has realtime web cams for 80/46 and parts of 287, 78, NJTPK, etc.

I'm with ikanwrite!!! There are people suffering in this heat -- some who wouldn't have AC even if the power were on -- and some who have power now but no escape from the heat. I've have counted myself as extremely fortunate during this recent disaster, and the now less recent one, to have my home intact. Whole Foods? I'd be happier if their power never went back on and if they were forced to actually GIVE back something instead of syphon our wallets dry. It t'ain't called 'Whole Paycheck' for nothing! As for the "cooling centers," what happens at the magical hour of 4:30 pm by which time they are all apparently closed? Does the temp drop 20 degrees at 4pm? Wow, I can't wait! Only 6 minutes to go...

"At one point they weren't letting us exit the building in any of our exists the grate in front of our salon was going to blow." Am I not reading that correctly? It doesn't make sense.

    I think it should read

At one point they weren't letting us exit the building FROM any of our EXITS SINCE THEY THOUGHT THAT THE grate in front of our salon was going to blow.

The power is back on Church Street. 26 hours & 2,000 pounds of ice later the Cafe is open.

Kudos to PSE&G for working round the clock, to Public Works for supplying the dry ice & to the Board of Health for running innumerable inspections to insure food safety.
