Tonight, at five o'clock, 15 and 16 year olds on Bloomfield's all-star little league ball team will compete against Delaware to determine which team will go to the Senior League World Series. The team, coached by Montclair resident Robert Chiaravolotti, had had a remarkable season winning the state title, said Anthony Todaro, president of the local league. " They only have to win one game tonight, but they've got two chances. If they lose the 5 pm game, they'll play again at 7. We hope the team will move on to the World Series, in Bangor Maine, an international competition. If they make it, they'll challenge a Senior League team from Brussels, Belgium this Sunday.
Tadaro told us anyone can follow the game on a "really great sports website" eteamz.com. Tadaro is working to expand the charter of the Little League to include Montclair and Glen Ridge. Interested ball players can get more info from him at 973-748-0599. Leave a message in mailbox#1.

Congratulations, kids. Way to go. Good luck.
BTW, Bloomfield is really serious about its baseball. You should see those fields they have! We, on the other hand, have very old trees...
Nice to read something about the accomplishments of this great team -- Robert Chiaravolotti is a great guy!
He is a great guy!
Testing something for speed.
Make way for the artie express!
Bloomfield is serious about it's baseball. So much so, that it let go of (read: fired) it's Varsity head coach recently, as I understand. I presume the BOE thought it necessary.
This past year's BHS team has been the best of it's recent history...as has it's Senior American Legion team. I attribute that, partly, to Bloomfield's LL program.

So serious...that I only clicked once (I swear!) but it posted twice!! :?
happens to all of us
Update: they WON!!
The Bloomfield Senior League 16 year old all star baseball team has earned a spot competing in the World Series in Bangor, Maine beginning this Sunday. You may not recognize them however because they will no longer be sporting their traditional red and gray Bloomfield uniforms. Instead their jerseys will read East because tonight the team won the Eastern Regional Championship which was held in West Deptford, NJ. The team represented the entire state of New Jersey in this tournament after defeating South Vineland, NJ in the state championship. South Vineland won the state championship from 2001-2003. Bloomfield lost to South Vineland once in the tournament which placed them in the loser’s bracket. Bloomfield triumphed through the loser’s bracket and defeated South Vineland in two straight games to put them in the Eastern Regional Tournament.
In the Eastern Regional Tournament, Bloomfield (or New Jersey as they were known in West Deptford) was undefeated winning the winner’s bracket and going 4-0. The states of Maine, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Delaware, and of course New Jersey were represented along with the home team of West Deptford. In their first game, New Jersey defeated Maine 11-1. They defeated Pennsylvania 5-4 in a game which was postponed due to lightning in the top of the sixth inning with the score tied at 4-4. New Jersey came back the next morning and won in the bottom of the seventh in an exciting manner. New Jersey went on to defeat the home team West Deptford in another exciting game which ended with a final score of 5-3. This put New Jersey into the championship game on Thursday against Delaware, the winners of the loser’s bracket. New Jersey beat Delaware 13-5 to win the Eastern Regional Tournament and to gain the title of East in the upcoming Senior League World Series.
Here are the kids who make up the team:Michael Andrade (c)Dan Bataille (of)Jason Chesterman (of)Mike Chiaravalloti (1b, p)Chris Dellipaoli (of, p, 3b)John DelVecchio (2b)Vinnie DelVecchio (ss, p)Matthew Mazzolla (c)Kevin Miller (3b, p, ss)Rich Monroig (of, p, 1b)Liam Penberthy (of)Tom Petrillo (2b, 3b)Jordan Skidmore (of)Eric Szuhany (of, p)
So if you know any of these kids, make sure you congratulate them. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it’s happening to a team made up of a bunch of kids who attend Bloomfield High School! They worked really hard-- practicing most of the days of their summer, working out many early mornings, and playing and defeating the best of the best. Wish them luck for the upcoming World Series and make sure you keep track of how they’re doing! Here’s the official World Series website: http://www.littleleague.org/series/2006divisions/slbb/series.htm First up is Belgium! Go Bloomfield! (Or should I say East!)
Also if you’d like to read about all the details of their previous games, check out this website: http://eteamz.active.com/senioreasternregional/news/Bloomfield participated in games 8, 16, 19, and 22.
Bloomfield won the 2nd game last night, 13-5, so they do advance. Congrats!
My son played in Bloomfield with many of those kids...after we moved to Montclair, he was 'grandfathered' by Bloomfield and was able to finish LL there. As soon as he had to play in Montclair, he quit baseball and started playing lacrosse. Bloomfield LL is FAR superior to Montclair. Though Mayor Remsen has made good on promise to improve fields, leagues are run by pin-heads on Claremont rather than parents. The parent-run, Williamsport-sanctioned Bloomfield leagues produce far better players and learning experiences than what we have in Montclair(though kudos go out to the improved T-ball program in Montclair).
My guess is because the LL program is so poor here in Montclair many of the better athletes join the lacrosse program (which, btw, is parent run, HS-sactioned and NOT run by Claremont). Ever wonder why Montclair excels at lacrosse and not baseball? The answer lies on Claremont.

Congratulations, Bloomfield kids. Quite an achievement--we're proud of you (even those of us from Montclair).
Bruce, evidently you haven't been reading the Montclair Times, which recently ran a story on the Montclair Baseball Club's U9 team, which made it to the finals this year in the very tough Bergan Co. league, where towns take their baseball as seriously as Bloomfield does.
The "pinheads" who run the town baseball league, by the way, are greatly constrained by the lack of fields. No parent in their right mind would run a town-wide league with the current scarcity of playable fields, which is why the town has stepped in to do it. Montclair's demographics may also explain why baseball doesn't get more support--it tends to be a blue collar sport played by whites and hispanics, and doesn't seem to be big among African Americans.
Referencing Surrounded - Yes Bloomfield is serious about baseball, always was in spite of the last several years. In all due respect to say "this past BHS team has been the best of it's recent history" is misleading. It was the only winning season (16-14) under the coach in 6 years despite a feeder program that won their tournaments and the past winning tradition at BHS.
The same high school players in American Legion and Senior League under different coaches are WINNING tournaments and ENJOYING the game. It shows what the coach can or cannot accomplish.
Players in general do not lie and considering everything that went on (unprintable) over the last several years that the public was aware, the BOE finally did the right thing.
Congratulations and Good Luck Bloomfield
MHS baseball is as good as BHS baseball. The varsity teams faced each other 2 times and split the series 1-1. So please dont talk about mtc baseball sucking (at least at the high school level).
Bloomfield Fan: I know to whom you refer and the many circumstances which surround him. My own son was a victim, shall I say. I know where you're coming from and agree with everything you've said. My intention was not to mislead. Earlier on, I attributed the coach's lack of finesse, as I'd put it, to his being "green". But I suppose he hasn't "matured" much over the years...wanting to teach but not willing to learn. His loss!
just an update that Bloomfield won it's first game today 10 to 2 against belgium. Thank you for all the POSITIVE comments about Bloomfield and Baseball. This group of kids really are special and win or lose are really experiencing a once in a lifetime experience.
