Keeping Their Cool

Montclair Center was kind of a ghost town tonight at sunset, with Bloomfield Ave. closed to vehicular traffic and businesses on and around Church St. shut down. But businesses east of Fullerton Ave. were open, and it was pretty easy for a pedestrian to cross Bloomfield Ave., as long as they took care to avoid the emergency vehicles. At Montclair's official cooling center (below, right) in the public library, where they were serving Oreos, water and pizza, fire chief Kevin Allen told us that 1,400 customers had lost power as a result of today's fire. Down the street, Cafe Eclectic was an unofficial cooling center for the young and hip, serving up the usual lattes and high-speed internet access in full air-conditioning.

Power lines were cut around 4 pm this afternoon, which almost immediately stopped the fire, Chief Allen told us. Residential and commercial customers were affected from Orange Road up to Whole Foods.

I'm far upstate at Yoga Boot Camp and I'm concerned about my home town. This summer has been particularly unsettling.

Our daughter, who works on Church Street, got a ride home when the store closed about 4:00. But our car is still at the Church Street parking lot. Does anyone know if the area's been reopened to traffic yet?

off topic, sorry.
I live out of town and want to go to Hoboken to get the Path Train...is there daily parking at any of the Montclair train station parking lots?

"Yoga Boot Camp?"

That sounds somewhat oxymoronic! Now I've got a mental image of R. Lee Ermey sitting in the lotus position going, "ummmmmmmmm".

Now if you wrote "Yoda Boot Camp" that would a different story...

all montclair NJT stations require permits. I know for the walnut street station, some people park on grove street just north of claremont (the streets closest to the station have 2 hr limits) and walk the 2 blocks, since there's a waiting list for permits.

I bet it would only cost an extra $100,000 to get wayfinding signs that point to cooling centers.

Kim,
I live on Bloomfield Ave and keep my car in the lot behind Church Street. I was able to advise the police car on S Fullerton that I have had to get to the Cresent Lot and they let me in with no problems.

Yoga Boot Camp...LOL...to me, that conjures up an image of Lee Marvin grunting out commands..."Downward Facing Dog, NOW! And quit eyeballing me!"

Ice-

I think that Orange Train Station (off Main St. in Orange) has some parking there that is daily. When I worked in Manhattan, I used that station a lot.

The other idea is to drive to Harrison and park on the street by the PATH station there. My husband did that for grad school and he swears by it.

Hope this helps!

Parking for the train.
You should look at the lot at Little Falls, just past the college. I hear it's almost always empty
