Power Mostly Restored

Tuesday, August 1, 2006

PSE&G news mistress Jenn Kramer reports that, as of 10:45 tonight, there are about 250 customers without power in Montclair. Initially, when two manhole covers blew today on Church Street, about 1,500 customers lost power, but their power was restored by 5 pm. Then, when the electric company deliberately cut off power to the area in order to control the situation and protect the underground electrical system,1,000 more customers lost power. Three quarters of those affected had their power back shortly before 9 pm, Kramer said.

Still affected are the areas closest to today's underground fire: parts of Bloomfield Ave., Church St., South Park and South Fullerton.

PSE&G has delivered two backup generators to Montclair, one of which is powering the apartments at 45 Church Street. The other is available for the Montclair Police Department to use at its discretion. PSE&G also delivered several thousands pounds of dry ice to the town's emergency operations center, which is at the fire house.

Although the cause of the underground cable failure is not yet determined, Kramer says "it's likely that heat and high demand complicated it" but didn't cause it.

PSE&G which experienced record demand today, had few problems handling demand outside of Montclair.

It expects demand to be even higher tomorrow. Conserve energy. Here's how.

Meanwhile, we hear that the county executive and sheriff came to town earlier this evening and had a hard time tracking down town manager Joe Hartnett, who was in a town council meeting and wasn't responding to phone calls. Someone was sent to summon him.

Pablo Guzman on Channel 2 news just reported live (lead story at 11:00) that PSEG said that 1000 Montclair customers would be without power until tomorrow night.

He didn't report precisely where, that info would of course be too trivial for the viewing audience.

Cheers to our hyperlocal blog for filling in some of that info.

Power mostly restored? Yes.
Confidence restored? No.

Was Scott Surbeck (sp?) on hand to capture any blowing manhole lids on digital film?

I work at 50 Church ... second floor overlooking the intersection. It was a scary few minutes before we could figure out what was going on. Was anyone hurt?

As of 1250am when I left for work the power was still out on parts of Maolis. Much to our chagrin it is on across, up and down the street. It's only part of our block that's out. Although it looked like there are a few homes on Ridgewood out as well. I heard the 250 customers figure on the radio at 1am. That sounds like wishful thinking.

I own a shop on church street and saw the smoke billowing out of the manhole as well as our electricity flickering on and off around the time of the first explosion at about 2:30. I was in the the store closing up at around 3pm when I heard and felt the second explosion and got out of the shop fast. I just read an article this past sunday in the star ledger about underground gas explosions in nj and was a bit nervous.
I'm glad no one was hurt and I hope all power is restored by now.

does anyone know if the Orange Road YMCA preK building has power?

Does anyone know if the library on S Fullerton has power?

Posted by bookworm | August 2, 2006 6:53 AM

Unfortunately, BangZ is unable at this time to gain access into the building and contact any of our scheduled appointments. For anyone that may be reading this, BangZ salon is closed today. It is unsure at this time when we will be reopen but we will be in contact with all scheduled appointments as soon as possible. Please stay safe and cool. Thank you, BangZ.

Does anyone know anything about the woman who sleeps on the bench in front of the S Fullerton library? She always wears lots of layers of clothes and carrys bags of - well - bags. She doesn't make eye contact or approach people that I know of and seems harmless, but I worry that she is in an awfully vulnerable state with her level of exposure especially in this heat.

Is there some sort of outreach for people like that in our community?

M, I know the woman that you're talking about. I saw her last night on South Fullerton resting on a wall. There are times that she hops on a bus to get cool and/or get to another location.

Coming in this AM, many streets leading to Bloomfield Ave are closed.
We have power.
I made this offer on another thread. IF yopu know anyone who needs meds refrigerated, come to our store.
Also, we have cold water out for the pets and snacks as well.

If you go to
http://www.montclairnjusa.org/
you will find a listing of what area will not have power until later on today.

On NJ news 12 (Channel 62 for comcast customers) the reporter had been reporting live all night i think said that the library on S Fullerton was open all night for people who needed AC. As of this morning, I still did not have power. I live in the same building as the used book store.

M,

I have often wondered about that many-layered woman myself. I have heard her talking to herself at times. There is another very elderly woman that hangs out around S. Fullerton who I haven't seen in a couple weeks. And have you ever seen the man who walks with his garbage bags?

Yes, I wonder if there are any outreach services. It seems so horrible that these people are left to fend for themselves when they seem so incapable of doing so.

What about Cameron Animal Hospital?? I love Dr. Cameron - he is the best! What happened to all the animals that have to be there overnight and the ones he keeps till they are adopted? I hope, especially the sick ones, weren't stuck without any cooling!

I saw the man who walks with his garbage bags heading in Eagle Rock Reservation at approx 7:45pm last night.

I usually see him heading from the reservation towards Montclair Center walking down Gates in the morning.

There should be outreach to help these folks!!

I must be one of the lucky 250 to still have no power...one of the few days I'm happy to be at work.

The library on South Fullerton has both power and AC. :-)

I just got a call (11am)from a customer in Montclair, wanted a delivery. I told her "didn't you hear about out problems..blackout.
She said "Nooo, she didn't watch the news, she saw The Daily Show"
Then she "is CON Ed on the scene?" I commented"If Con Ed was hear, we'd be in the dark for about a week"
We both had a laugh

Big fan of Dr. Cameron too. He takes care of my cats.

Considering what happened to the power in NYC, maybe our towns should have an audit performed of the electical systems they use. Montclair has had a number of outages not including the micro-burst.

Dr. Cameron's office has power...

I wonder about all of those people too. The young black kid on the bike, who is always looking around, the very old black lady that sleeps on the porch of the hairdresser porch on N Fullerton, The lady with all the layers of clothes and bags, I have seen her sleeping in the alley near the Little Criket when it rains, and the garbage man, who is always hard at work moving cans all over town. I assume they are mostly cases of mental illness.

Posted by kim | August 2, 2006 11:05 AM

The library was open yesterday and yes, there are outreach services provided (actually at the Library). Saw the overdressed lady in question.

The young black kid on the bike does have a home.

I just want to say again that Montclair and Essex county have excellent outreach programs...Our mentally ill and homeless population is cared for in the best manner possible.

Unfortunately, they can't force the walking man with garbage bags to go someplace cool or my elderly next door neighbor to drink water.

Posted by resa | August 2, 2006 12:43 PM

I've always been curious about our homeless population in Montclair. Seeing them everyday makes me want to know more about them. Honestly, I thought about approaching them but then i fear I might trigger a bad reaction. The kid on the bike seems a bit hostile at times. Does anyone have any background on these locals?

how bout that tall black guy with the yellow eyes that is always sitting on the corner of church???
