What’s So Fun About Wrecking Flowers?

Just as the teens involved in last year’s vandalism of Presby Iris Gardens issued their public apology, a new flower attack was reported to police (and Baristanet) this morning. Joel Tabor of Montclair Feed wrote to tell us that the two planters in front of his pet supply store were toppled overnight. And that wasn’t all. Vandals also upended trash cans in a mini-microburst of maliciousness all around the intersection of Forest St. and Glenridge Ave. in Montclair.
Not that we’re saying it’s kids, but anybody else ready for school to start?

Does Montclair have a curfew? Any word on anything that might have been caught on a security tape?

Woke me up last night…they smashed some bottles and one of the street lights. Within seconds of hearing the glass, the police arrived at the scene.

We drove by this mess this AM too. Pretty annoying eh? All in all though, we did a lot worse when we were kids. Not that I am saying it is OK, but it is just kids being kids. We managed not to get caught so we didn’t learn our lesson until we were a bit older and could look back and see how stupid this stuff was. Hopefully these guys get caught and learn their lesson now.

I live on Bloomfield Ave., by Church St., every night, around 2 am., there are quite a few patrons leaving the Red Cheetah, which is only a block away from me.
Since they have opened, every night, about the same time ( 2am, when they close ), there are these people walking down Bloomfield Ave., yelling, singing, and many times, when they walk by those flower pots on the sidewalks, they knock them down, and pull out the flowers. I’ve seen this myslef many times.
Well, last night it was no different…kids walked by my window, and then I heard glass breaking …I’m pretty sure, all the damage last night was caused by these people.
What to do? Have the people at Red Cheetah partol the area at closing…just a thought, but it might help.

Wayne: what do you expect from living in a mixed residential/commercial zone area?! If you want a good night’s rest, move out to the countryside where your nearest neighbor is measured by acres! But I suspect you chose your location because of the convenience of walking to restaurants and shops and professional offices. You can’t have it both ways.

Catch….I’m not saying I can’t handle it, actually, I’m up anyway, doing editing for my cable show. Living here, in this area, I expect to hear alot of street noise, that’s not why I posted my above statement.
I did it, so that everyone might have a good idea who has been causing all the damage to the flower pots, etc., along Bloomfield Ave., and some of the side streets. It has nothing to do with me not knowing what to expect living in this part of town, on a main drag.

Catch 22. You are one of the ppl that are the problem and not the solution. Here you have Wayne noting a potential cause of the problem and your response is “if you don’t like it move”. You should run for office, you seem to think like many politicians. How about “Good thinking Wayne, maybe that is the problem, now we need to find a way to see if this is really what is happening.”

Catch 22 seems to think it’s OK to vandalize a neighborhood when you leave a bar at 2am.

You can’t effectively enforce laws in every location, in every second of the day and night. A more common effort is to put pressure on the businesses to somehow control their customers after they’ve left the place of business (not possible) or run the business out of town (not good for socio-economic relations, town revenue, etc). The real “solution” is to address cultural behavior at the family-level, but no one seems to have the patience and finances for such an endevour, even if it is the most likely path to success.

If we’re placing blame on the patrons of Red Cheetah for vandalism then we owe the kids, who always seem to take the fall for everyhing in Baristaville, an apology.
So, who was it? Kids or people over 21 leaving a club?

Are there more important things going on? Of course there are! Am I niave to think this would never happen? No.
However, just when things are going well & this happens … it kinds’ of turns your stomach.
    It’s all cleaned up.
I doubt the “people” that did this have the cojones
to come forward. Not holding my breath.
Anyway Thank you Debbie for taking the pictures & reporting on this. Thanks also to Kelly of Semplice
for getting in touch w/ BID & getting a crew here to cleanup the area.

Between 1:30 and 2:30 AM, N. Fullerton was a parade of obnoxious drunken idiots blithering down the street from Red Cheetah. I was up working as well with a front row view. These people were trashed! Crying, signing, screaming up the street, cursing out the “shooshers”, trying to find each other via cell phones and one poor attempt at doing a burn-out. I’d say around 20 to 30 passed our building in the street and grass. Cruisers were out looking for something/one but passed by here at all the wrong times (from my view/earshot). I hope this isn’t a “fall preview” of what’s to come from this place. Geez, I sound like an “adult”! I no doubt have had my fare share of these end-of-night scenes outside some bar when I was younger. Could be my “comes around” part of “what goes around”.

It’s not only pedestrians. I also live on Bloomfield Ave. I woke up to the sound of a loud crash at 2am this morning. When I looked out the window there was a woman who had crashed her car into a garbage can and a street pole on the corner of Glenridge Ave and Bloomfield Ave. The police were there during the incident.
and on another note.. Those coconuts that Cuban Petes decorates his planters with always end up as baseballs, every morning they are smashed all over Bloomfield Ave.

Film it Wayne – then send a copy to both the Red Cheetah and the Montclair PD. I’d pay to see that.

    You know what that means…

BTW, every person I saw got in a car. They were not local walkers. Scary..for them, us, our parked cars, and street poles.

Oh… and the lady that hit the garbage can and the pole last night… she was allowed to drive away. Are there any officers on here that might be able to explain why breathalizers were not performed on her?

  25. POSTED BY Place any name you would like here _______  |  September 01, 2006 @ 8:08 am

While this site can be entertaining on occasion, the usual banter is completely inane and relatively useless. What really amuses me is when some point to others as cowards for hiding in anonymity (especially directed at those who do not submit a fake name and are, therefore, listed as “Hiding …”). Such jabs virtually always come from folks who proudly post fake names. Do some really think that they are showing their courage by using stupid fake names? Why would they point to the cowardice of others?
I, obviously, have no problem with posting alias’, but I would never presume to call someone to task for “Hiding” and I have substantive respect for those who do use their real names.

My Gripe with those who are “Hiding” is that it is impossible to discuss someones argument with them when there are several “Hidings” in the same thread. You can’t tell which person made which posting.

Now this is a serious issue. Vandilism is definetely something that should be taken care of as soon as possible. I guess wrecking flowers and breaking glass just isnt as exciting as fights huh?
Well, it can’t be considering the 26 comments on this and 126 comments on the brawl.
