Burglars Find Easy Pickings In Montclair

Wednesday, September 27, 2006

Early Monday morning, a Montclair neighborhood experienced a rash of burglaries sometime between 2 and 3 a.m. The Star Ledger (scroll down to "Montclair:") reports that three homes and six vehicles were entered; another two home break-ins were attempted, unsuccessfully.

The burglars ran through the back yards of homes on Carolin and Aubrey Roads, and Wildwood Avenue, and entered the three homes through unlocked back doors. Cash, laptops, a digital camera, an iPod and cell phone were stolen. Unlocked parked vehicles were also entered. Police say some residents reported hearing noises in the early morning. Locks at two homes on Aubrey Road were also tampered with, but thieves did not enter.

Seems to me that they key word in this story is unlocked.

Burglaries not robberies

Posted by Rob | September 27, 2006 1:17 PM

were these considered "false alarms" when the burglers couldn't get in but tmapered with the locks?

Posted by Let's outsource the police | September 27, 2006 1:40 PM

Why on earth would anyone leave a car unlocked?

Posted by Duh! | September 27, 2006 1:42 PM

I don't condone anyone entering private property uninvited...

But honestly, why must 'we' alter our style of living to succumb to the idiocy of others?

I have 3 large dogs, and do not worry about someone entering my property (car/house), whether locked & tampered with, or unlocked and welcoming...

If anyone needs to pursue the option of having a dog - as opposed to hiring alarm systems, put out a post, and I'll be happy to assist placing animals that need to be adopted or re-homed.

(just got word this a.m. that 2 purebred pugs need a new home as their owners home perished in a fire, and the family is just pulling their lives together, and would like the dogs to be adopted by a stable family)... There are so many circumstances like this and just think - the damage these 2 ankle-nippers could do, if those thieves-in-the-nite were to step foot in the home uninvited!!!

I like dog. good for food. good with crispy noodle

How is locking your car door altering your style of living?

Do post more information on these dogs and contact the local shelters for help. These dogs need to be *pets* (not watchdogs).

Posted by Duh! | September 27, 2006 2:01 PM

Doree, Please post more information about these Pugs.

Posted by Dave | September 27, 2006 2:05 PM

I don't have watch dogs - alot of people who know me on this site can lend a voice for me.... I only deal with family pets, who are rescued and are LOYAL...

But still serve the purpose of a deterrent.

The house that makes the noise, is going to be the last house on the block targeted...

and my way of thinking - the block that makes the noise (i.e. all houses having dogs), makes the thieves find another neighborhood!

I like to have people that I know knock on my door and enter (a-la Lucy & Ethel)...

I want people to check in on me and my family to be sure we are doing well... and I do the same to my close friends as well.

Posted by Doreen | September 27, 2006 2:27 PM

Dave,

I am waiting for an email with a picture and more details... as soon as I have that, I'll post the info on this thread.

I do know that it is one male and one female from the Freehold area. The vet papers were destroyed in the fire, but I'm waiting for the vet's phone numbers to be sent to me, so I can get their medical history...

more to come...

Posted by Doreen | September 27, 2006 2:36 PM

Hey, Duh! I'm with you on this one. What's wrong with locking your car and your home before saying good night? For goodness sake...just do it!

Posted by snap out of it | September 27, 2006 2:52 PM

I know of at least one of the houses that got broken into owned a dog. Didn’t do them much good.

Also, whoever is doing these robberies could be working from a calendar to determine which areas to rob. This exact area was hit almost exactly one year ago. The robbers had the exact same MO last year.

Posted by Joe | September 27, 2006 3:02 PM

I can't understand why people don't lock their houses and cars. We are not living in Mayberry, circa 1955, people.

Posted by latebloomer | September 27, 2006 3:20 PM

And the Town wants us to pay $50 a year to register our alarm system, otherwise the Police won't anwser the call!

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2006 3:30 PM

We should not blame the victim though. They did try to enter locked houses as well.

As a neighbor of dog-owners, I can do without all the barking.

I can't tell you how many times I have woken to the sound of barking. Do dog owners not even think about their neighbors regarding this?

Posted by tax on crime | September 27, 2006 3:34 PM

i live in the stated neighborhood, but was not burglarized, this time.

any lawyers out there?: what are my rights at the moment my home is broken in and entered by a perpetrator?

Posted by joey ramone | September 27, 2006 3:43 PM

Once they are in your house it's my understanding you can do whatever you want since it's in "self defense"....I'm not a lawyer though

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2006 3:55 PM

Not "blaming the victim", just urging people to exercise a little common sense. the locked houses were not burglarized.

Posted by latebloomer | September 27, 2006 4:00 PM

You cook in the kitchen.
You sleep in the bedroom.
You crap in the bathroom.
You entertain in the living room or den.
THE CAR GOES IN THE GARAGE !
D--U--H !! Mine's in the garage, alarm set, doors locked, brake-club on and garage door locked !
You leave car in driveway, locked or unlocked, it doesn't mean very much to you....that is until it is gone !! (and it will be, it's only a matter of time !)

Posted by Sanford | September 27, 2006 4:02 PM

Latebloomer - these scumball creeps will break into locked houses and cars without a second thought - don't kid yourself!

It happened to me very recently!

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2006 4:04 PM

I'm sure they do.

That doesn't mean you don't lock your doors, and reduce the risk!

Jeez Louise!

Posted by latebloomer | September 27, 2006 4:11 PM

Sanford--
For those of us who aren't as lucky to have a garage, do you mean that we don't care about our cars/property? PLEASE. And why do you need the brake-club on it in your garage when everything is locked/alarmed? Seems a bit extreme, imo.

Posted by Hiding in Baristaville | September 27, 2006 4:15 PM

It's outrageous that we should have to lock the doors to our homes and cars. Don't do it! Especially if you live on my block; and especially if you live on either side of my house.

Posted by walleroo | September 27, 2006 4:21 PM

Catch em and FRY EM!

Dear tax on crime,

Did you think of your neighbors when you had kids?

I was thinking ofpeople who DO have a garage or 2 or 3 and who do NOT use them for their intended purpose. Of course some houses & apartments &/or condos do not. I realize that.

My cars are worth alot and I own 2 collector "Show" cars - thusly the triple protection. I also had the windows and pedestrian door removed.
I knew of a person with a 1957 Thunderbird, concours show 96 point condition - he came home from a show, put her in the garage and the next day - she was gone! The thief? I guy driving by as he pulled the Bird into his driveway ! (He got it back in 20 hours, unharmed.) Can NEVER be too safe.

Posted by Sanford | September 27, 2006 7:18 PM

that's why concerned homeowners should be packing heat...don't be afraid to shoot and protect your property.

or u could try the liberal response and talk with the robbers and ask them to express their feelings. Let them know you feel their pain.

Posted by Iceman | September 27, 2006 8:06 PM

Gee Auntie Em, guess we're not in Canada anymore!

Posted by ikanwrite | September 27, 2006 9:13 PM

A person could sit by the window 24/7 with "heat" ~ take a break to eat or whatever, and that's when the thief strikes !

I think I'd go with the Liberal approach:

Me: "Hello, out late tonite, are you allright? I see that you appreciate my collector Cadillac. So much so that you are trying to borrow it for the night"
Thief:
Get out my face. I'm taking this Cad and driven' the crap outta it, NOW
Me: Oh, no, you can't do that to it - it's very special and a show winner.
Thief; Get out my way or I'll blow your brains out.
Me:
Tell me, what happened in your childhood to make you so aggressive?
Thief: BOOM !

Posted by Sanford | September 27, 2006 9:15 PM

IN my experience it takes a bit of balls entering an occupied dwelling---which frightens me, and you should be frightened as well--

--It's one thing to come
home and find you've been burgled, rather shocking actually for the victim. But to have been done so while you were sleeping --should make you think twice about blatantly leaving doors unlocked.

What if a confrontation accidently occured--You live in Essex County, by God. Snap out of it!--A jury would probably convict you knowing you assaulted some "poor" thief wandering into your unlocked home. And the Insurance Companies don't think too kindly at this practice as well.

God Forbid you shot them--you'll be looking at charges, no doubt and costly lawyer fees. Lock your doors and cars and garages while you sleep.

It obviously deters them--I am not blaming you for wanting to live like that but the practice is not worth the consequence or possible consequences.

Just think of the Jury pool-the civil liability...like I said think Essex County.

On behalf of the liberal point of view, I don't own anything that I value more than a human life. If I did, I'd make sure Iceman, Cathar and ROC were sitting on the roof of my neighbor's house guarding the block with their favorite weapons of individual destruction and the best bottle of vodka so they could work themselves into a rabid froth about how no crimes were ever committed when Republicans ran the country (oh, wait, they do run the US and Iraq). Maybe instead, I'd make sure my tax dollars were going to an adequate police force to deter crime.

Posted by LetThemEatWords | September 27, 2006 10:25 PM

And if I truly valued your amazingly petty and mean-spirited brain, letthemeatwords, I'd soak it in the vodka, shake it up a bit to get a froth going and then toss it off that roof so the neighborhood feral cats could play with it.

And this would be on behalf of a non-partisan, but intelligent and nuanced, point of view.

What a truly dumb post, in other words, based on zilch knowledge of any of us, or even of what constitutes "adequate" community policing, and what can and cannot be prevented or deflected in such situations. If there's such a thing as a "liberal Neanderthal," you're it.

I also drink Irish whiskey and single malts, but never vodka, you hopelessly declasse weasel.

Posted by cathar | September 27, 2006 10:37 PM

I apologize, Cathar, for assuming that Iceman did know you when he queried:

cathar....did u stay home and contemplate if 'there is a there there?" while drinking a vodka neat?
Posted by: The Iceman | January 1, 2006 12:51 PM

With regard to community policing, a member of my family has worked in police departments in two states plus the court system of a third state, and is a consultant to states on crime-related matters.

Posted by LetThemEatWords | September 27, 2006 11:51 PM

Sanford:

LOL with your liberal approrach!!

But honestly, you have to lock your homes up if you truly value it. I could go to the Wachovia on Bloomfield Ave in Glen Ridge and guess what? My car will be locked. It is 2006.

Posted by cammy | September 28, 2006 1:26 AM

"On behalf of the liberal point of view, I don't own anything that I value more than a human life."

I know of only one thing that I value more than the human life of a perpetrator who breaks and enters my home - the lives of my family.

Posted by joey ramone | September 28, 2006 5:31 AM

So, Montclarians, how do we feel now about the effort that went into busting that poker game?

Posted by appletony | September 28, 2006 7:08 AM

Are you saying that

poker players = burglars

Posted by Please don't lock your doors and windows I have a habit to feed | September 28, 2006 7:13 AM

Why tempt fate? Sure, burglars will sometimes break into locked homes, but leaving the door unlocked is just asking for it. Stupidity, plain and simple. Even if you don't get robbed, leaving your doors unlocked makes your neighborhood a soft target for opportunistic burglars.

And I, letthemeatwords, have been rousted (t'was long ago) by the forces in justice in, as best I recall, four states. So I too have "experience" with the legal system, and even more first-hand than your own. (We also both know the high value so many here place on consultants, eh?)

Yet that you recall and hold close for your later use a post that dates back to January, however, kind of boggles the mind. Do you actually have an "Iceman-ROC-Cathar" file of some sort? (I don't even have one for lasermikey's offenses against logic and our supposedly mutual mother tongue.) We're really not (particularly since I doubt any of us know each other) worth either that much obsessiveness or that much agita.

Liberalism:

...a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties.

Yes Iceman, it's obvious that you don't have a brain.

"and the autonomy of the individual"...hiding, are u writing with your head up clinton's butt? the liberal wing of the dem party believes in socialism and everyone being equal...there's no room for autonomy under the cloak of socialism. You need to review your political philosophy.

That is a definition of what today is better referred to as "classical liberalism." The people who have absconded with the term today are illiberal statists.

Let's see here: according to one child who posts under multiple names, I'm harmless, a shut-in. He even knows my name and makes fun of it. But he never, ever "shows me his own" in return.

Perhaps he's afraid that if we ever meet I might put multiple dents in my walker with his head?

Or that I'll ask his mommy to restrict his play time on the computer?

Posted by cathar | September 28, 2006 11:22 PM

I thought it was only kids who play "show me yours and I'll show you mine".

At your advanced age it could be regretable, suicidal,or criminal.
