Drinking Gone Wild

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

128 students, including many from Montclair State, were arrested for underage drinking at a wild party in North Caldwell early Monday morning. The bash was "out of control" said Police Chief Joseph Clark. Residents on the normally quiet street have apparently been enduring reenactments of "Animal House" antics for three years - just this year police have received 37 complaints. The story was reported in the New York Post.

Police responding to a noise complaint on Henry Avenue at 12:05 a.m. were shocked to find more than 200 drunken revelers - most of them underage - packed inside the four-bedroom house.

"The kitchen cabinets were loaded with alcohol," Clark said. "Where you'd normally see coffee cups, I saw liquor."

Cops also found bags filled with marijuana strewn on the sticky floor, but weren't able to charge anyone with possession.

Police grouped the partiers by age on the lawn, gave them field sobriety tests, and took them to the community center, where 128 people were charged with underage drinking, including four people who live at the house.

Those four and two other renters were charged with serving alcohol to minors.
Seventy-five people who were over 21 were released.

Most of the underage Montclair State University students were very polite and admitted they had been drinking, Clark said.

What a relief to hear that the kids from Montclair State were the polite drunks...

too bad for the kids that this didn't happen in glen ridge -- the cops would have kept it hush hush.

I'm more shocked to hear that there are renters living in North Caldwell.

iloveyou,

Is there any reason to plaster a non-story like this on the cover of the Star Ledgar? This was a college party, who cares. If anyone did not know college kids drink, then I would say its worth talking about. If this happened in Glen Ridge, who knows if it would have hit the press, but I would hope it would not. Its unnecessary negative publicity for North Caldwell.

A rented house in N Caldwell... that is the story! If the neighborhood is so up in arms, why don't they speak with the home owner?

marijuana? where did they buy it????? TIA

Not only rented, but rented to a bunch of college kids. Think it might be someone with a grudge against the neighborhood?

what is the address and date of the next party if you happen to know?

Where da parties at, yo? I just moved to this m'fer! I'm get me some fine bitches, smoke weed. F da police!

Go Red Hawks!

I was once charged with serving alcohol to minors, but I was 20 so I too was a minor and was charged with underage drinking. Idiots. 128 people!? Whatever happened to running from the police, hopping fences, jeez.

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life.

None of this should come as a surprise, people. USA Today recently polled 140,000 college students to compile their "Top 10 Party Towns" list for 2006:

1) Fort Lauderdale, FL
2) North Caldwell, NJ
3) Cancun, Mexico
4) Daytona Beach, FL
5) Nassau, Bahamas
6) Las Vegas, NV
7) Aspen, CO
8) Panama City, FL
9) Miami, FL
10) South Padre Island, TX

This is a problem that isn't going away.

Refreshing: Your post made me laugh out loud!

Having grown up the Caldwells, I can certainly vouch for the fact that they are *hard-driving party towns*...compared to Salt Lake City, perhaps!

:-)

Whatever happened to running from the police, hopping fences, jeez.

This new generation grew-up watching "COPS" on Fox-TV ... they always got caught, no matter how they tried to elude the police ...

These kids' mistake was living in a house in a residential neighborhood instead of the dorms! We had wild parties in my dorm in college (this was in the 70's!) and no one ever complained. We had Pinkerton guards who supposedly were campus security. They usually joined the party and smoked some weed with the rest of the partygoers.

little miss maui probably flashed her breasts to the guards as well, arousing them as they tried to do their jobs!

ah...the filth!

Uh, have you been reading how many applicants and admitted students are enrolled at colleges around the country these days?! Many schools don't have the room to house them all. They have lotteries for dorm housing, and many are left to commute from their parent's home or rented off-campus apartments.

Where's the party, Yaar?

And what about the parties that regularly result in police visits at the bottom of Cooper Ave in Montclair? The parents go away for the weekend, huge parties with underage drinking into the early morning hours, then rowdy car departures from 1am to 3am. I'd hazard a guess that this happens at other homes in Montclair also, don't you think? As for hushing it up, even when arrests have been made, I never see it in the Montclair Times, so Montclair seems to be pretty good at hushing these up as well.

When I grew up, the drinking age was 18, and virtually everybody in college could legally drink. Quite honestly, I have a bit of a problem asking a kid to go to Iraq, and then tell him he's not old enough to have a beer.

I know there are many lives saved by raising the drinking age to 21, but I suspect that we would get some more saved if we also raised the "Iraq" age to 21. The morality of "underage" drinking did not automatically change because some politicians changed the age from 18 to 19 to 21. I am raising my children to abide by the law, but in my heart, I feel this law is not right.

What is the penalty for a 21 year old for providing booze to a 20 year old? I hope they are not too harsh on those kids.

Not from here: these stories are not a result of a responsible, experienced adult who can have a beer or two and then call it a night. These young adults drink to get drunk, a rite of passage during those college years when you're free from your parents and yet not have full responsibilities of a "working man/woman". Thats a lot different than being a soldier in training or at war: the huge responsibility for your fellow troop's lives as well as representing your country in a patriotic and responsible way. The way I see it, college students need to earn their maturity, and the 21 age limit is a small concession to that end.

Jim,

I guess you have never been to a bar near a military base. They would easily give a college frat a run for it's money in terms of drinking to get drunk. Yet I still think it sucks for them that they get sent to Bagdad but our society thinks they're not old enough to drink.

I also find it funny that the U.S. has stricter drinking laws (in terms of age) than most countries, and yet we seem to have more problems with our kids getting drunk. Maybe it's not working.

The filth is in your head Agnes- Maui didn't have to flash her breasts - the guards were captivated by her vivaciousness, good looks, and obvious intelligence. That and she brought munchies with her.

Here's to you Maui!

geesh, the Iceman wishes he was there to give out candy.

Regarding MSU housing...

Did you all know that MSU rents space at a hotel on Rt 46 to house students because they have no space?

I was amazed that MSU has that many non-commuting students.

Didn't Homer once say, "Alcohol, the cause of all our problems and the solution to all our problems"

I guess you have never been to a bar near a military base.

Many might view what soldiers do in their off-duty time as a small reward for their "volunteer" work and meager government wages. Some might also view their drink-to-get-drunk behavior as immature and a reflection of their education level. I say your attempt to associate drinking age restrictions with sending young adults to Iraq is flawed.

Jim,

I would say that I don't understand your point.

Who is Candy?

Maybe the Iceman should introduce her to Norton Philbert.

To me, it's like being in a foreign country & not understanding the language. I never cared much for beer nor 90% of all mixed drinks. In the college I went to there were some who drank often but they were in the vast minority.
Over the summer, I'll consume under 10 beers, from May thru September. At a party a glass of wine or a mixed drink, no more than 1. I've never understood this "binge drinking" ~ just seems foolish and a waste, and possibly harmful to health. Again, foreign language.
I'd rather enjoy an infrequent $20.00 cigar !
I guess the future for AAA is insurred.

THER WAS ONLY 1 DIME BAG FOUND KIDS TODAY NO HEART HEY WHAT HAPPEN TO THE LEFT OVER UNOPENED ALCHOOL POLICE PARTY

Last night, I was awakened around 1 AM upon hearing some commotion on my normally quiet street. As it turns out, I had forgotten that it was the first day of school-drunk Rutgers kids were loitering outside a bar across the street and just idling in the middle of the road. It's pretty ironic that the only times I've ever had a problem with the pub-goers are when the out-of-town college kids come back to school. It irritates me to no end to see Abercrombie and Gap-clad students, who normally wouldn't be caught dead acting like such idiots at home, screaming and stumbling in the street. (Money really can't buy good taste.) Some of them got picked up by Newark cops. I can guarantee that they didn't pooh-pooh over the kids like the cops in North Caldwell. (They were cuffing people-even I was a bit surprised.)

Why can't they just learn to be QUIET drunks?

Say one,

I am just curious--were your parents pretty much non-drinkers when you were growing up? Sometimes, I think there is a correlation -- but I've really never seen any studies about it.

Newarker, lighten up....jeeze...

You try losing sleep over drunk hooligans hooting like monkeys below your window...you might get a bit wound up, too.

When one is drunk, one thinks one is indeed talking softly when, in fact, one is shout-talking.

Well, maybe they should think about switching to pot to mellow out.

More sex and less drinking is the answer.

all i know is, if theis happened in glen ridge, that would have been awesome..cuz i could have partied baristanet style!!!!!!!!!!
