One More Foreigner To Worry About

Sunday, September 17, 2006

If you happen to see something that looks like this horrifying beast congregating on whatever trees you have left after the mircroburst and the encroachment of ballfields and developers-- (depicted here in its native environment)--

images.jpg

albmaleb.jpg

Do not marvel at the wonders of nature.

Do not run screaming for the safety of the indoors.

Rather report the Infestor by calling 1-866-BEETLE 1. This is the invasive Asian longhorned beetle (ALB)─Anoplophora glabripennis ─ attempting to grow and reproduce on your apple, birch, horse chestnut, poplar, willow, elm, or ash tree. The ALB is in New Jersey and hatching plans to move Northward towards the prime real estate of Montclair.

As with most things, the government can't handle the threat without YOUR help--

Most of the initial ALB infestations have been found by the public, not pest specialists.... ...It is impossible for official inspectors to check every tree. For this reason, enlisting assistance from the public in the search of this beetle is essential to increase the likelihood of detecting infestations early.

"It is impossible for official inspectors to check every tree. "

What inspectors? We don't even have a certified arborist and you know if we call Kevin Ward he'll ignore us.

Is that actual size?

The Asian Long Horned Beetles are huge, and the damage they do is frightening.

About a month ago the Master Gardeners of Essex County were at the Farmer's Market on Walnut and they had handouts and were answering questions about the beetles. I'd tell you to ask the Master Gardeners when they are next at the Farmers Market, but according to posts on the Watercooler the MEDC only gave them one weekend.

Are there other "Foreigner"s that we're supposed to be worried about.

What does this headline mean?

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2006 12:40 PM

Why would the MEDC discrimnate against the Master Gardeners?

There is plenty of room at the table in the front of the Farmer's Market *every* week.

I wonder who said that the Master Gardeners should only be given one weekend.

Here's a list of the MEDC

I think a campaign aimed at MEDC Executive Director
Eva Marie Santiago might be the place to start.

"Why would the MEDC discrimnate against the Master Gardeners?"

According to the Watercooler, they directly spoke to the people in charge at MEDC, including the person doing the scheduling.

Maybe they should have mentioned that they were "friends of the Mayor."

It doesn't sound like they "discriminated," sounds like they just couldn't bother.

Why would the Master Gardeners be "friends of the Mayor."

or better still

Why would the Master Gardeners HAVE TO BE "friends of the Mayor."

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2006 1:42 PM

Does this mean that you must be a friend of the mayor in order to volunteer for anything in Montclair?

I would like to volunteer, but if it's a popularity contest I want no part of it.

"It doesn't sound like they "discriminated," sounds like they just couldn't bother."

Bother with what? The Master Gardeners bring their own table, chairs, and reference books. They set up at the front of the Farmer's Market near the MEDC table and had out leaflets and have discussions and offer advice.

There's no *bother* to the MEDC.

As a matter of fact the MEDC person at the Farmer's Market doesn't *bother* for anyone. Last week I tried to ask him a question and he turned his back to me and went on talking to the person sitting next to him behind the table.

The MEDC should recruit someone else to man their table as he's rude and unhelpful. But, then again, that may be the way the business people of Montclair *want* to be represented.

See below from the MEDC web site "which invites other non-profit organizations to use its information table at the market for promotional purposes".

I guess they are not telling the truth on their web site.

Here's the full text about the Farmer's Market and the MEDC

The Farmers' Market

The Farmers' Market is a project of the Montclair Economic Development Corp., which invites other non-profit organizations to use its information table at the market for promotional purposes. The Farmers' Market opens every Saturday, 8 am to 2 pm, from June 10th to November 11th at the Walnut Street Train Station in Montclair.

If you've ever seen how members are chosen for "voluntary" committees, you'd already know that only "friends" get appointed.

Posted by Hiding #008 | September 17, 2006 2:13 PM

I guess I'm naive.

No, I haven't volunteered for anything yet and thought that my application would be taken seriously.

I didn't realize that it was a "an old boys and girl club".

Is there a way to break into it- or who's ass do I have to kiss -the least repugnant one preferably.

Posted by Linda S. | September 17, 2006 2:38 PM

MEDC hates the Master Gardeners because the Master Gardeners love life and want to cultivate beautiful things in fruitful soil. MEDC is all about destruction of all that we hold dear.

Do the business people who fund the MEDC know this?

Do they condone it?

Posted by Montclair is a really strange place | September 17, 2006 3:37 PM

What exactly does the MEDC do besides raise money for themselves and tout the Wayfinding project?

Can anyone name some specific things that they have done to help or encourage volunteering or to help the business community in general?

Have they encouraged businesses (like Trader Joe's) to locate to Montclair?

Did they find someone to develop the Hahnes building?

Are they supporting small businesses by letting them buy business or health insurance as a group?

Are they encouraging small businesses by connecting the small business owners with busness people who can mentor them?

Have they looked at parking for businesses and made suggestions to the parking Authority?

Doesn't the town give the MEDC money?

I seem to remember some brouhahah about that.

Aren't they financed by Montclair Businesses as well?

I just went out to put the recycling on the curb and a praying mantis that had to be 6" long was stationed on our storm door window. I have never seen one that big before and I didn't think that the larger ones were found in this area.

Anybody know?

The thing was huge. Perhaps it'll eat our mosquitoes.

Oh, now I've got it.

The MEDC won't let the Essex County Master Gardener's have a table at the Montclair Farmer's Market because they know that information on the invasive Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) will be passed around by the Master Gardeners.

The MEDC doesn't want the beetle identified in Montclair and hopes for another microburst so that infected trees will be blamed on the Microburst.

why would Asian Beetles = terrorists that hijacked airplanes.

The Original home of the Asian longhorned beetle is China.

Determined by USDA officials to have entered the United States inside solid wood packing material (SWPM) from China, the ALB was first discovered in August 1996 in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Within weeks, another infestation was found on Long Island in Amityville, NY, after officials learned that infested wood had been moved from Greenpoint to Amityville.

In July 1998, due to USDA’s national ALB pest alert campaign, a separate infestation was discovered in the Ravenswood area of Chicago. This discovery prompted APHIS to amend its existing quarantine of wood movement in infested areas and place additional restrictions on importing solid wood packing material into the United States from China and Hong Kong.

It was in October 2002 that ALB was spotted in Jersey City, NJ, and most recently, in August 2004, the ALB was discovered in the Borough of Carteret, the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township, and in the nearby cities of Rahway and Linden, NJ. The most recent discoveries, all within a two–square–mile area, mark the first time since 2002 that the invasive exotic pest has been seen outside the quarantined regions of Chicago, New York, and Jersey City, NJ.

APHIS' Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) officers diligently conduct visual inspections of high–risk cargoes and in high–risk areas, such as cargo distribution warehouses.
To further address the ALB problem at U.S. ports–of–entry, APHIS has issued pest alerts to ports of entry personnel, conducted outreach to local importers, and targeted high–risk importers and Chinese exporters for outreach and increased inspections. As part of a national survey, APHIS is focusing on cargo labeled for high–risk destinations (warehouses that have previously received cargoes infested with beetles). The Agency conducts secondary inspections and surveys of the environs at these destinations.
Additionally, in 1998, APHIS published an interim rule immediately requiring that all SWPM from China be completely free of bark and live plant pests and treated with either preservatives, heat, or fumigation prior to arrival in the United States. Effective September 16, 2005, all wooden packaging materials (e.g., pallets, crates, boxes, and dunnage) imported into the United States must be heat treated or fumigated with methyl bromide and marked with the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) logo and appropriate country code designating the location of treatment.

By conducting extensive periodic inspections at ports of entry, targeting shipments with solid wood packing materials, APHIS inspectors work to detect wood–boring pests and locate problem importers.

The ALB is just one of a number of exotic pests that present a serious threat to U.S. trees. Spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) and Mediterranean pine engraver beetle (Orthotomicuserosus) are two other nonnative wood–boring pests of concern. APHIS inspectors search for all such pests on imports of solid wood products and also on SWPM, such as pallets and crates.

I have it on good authority that the Mayor, yes, our Mr. Remsen, embezelled money earmarked for MEDC and bought-yes bought-these beetles to destroy Montclair trees so that he wouldn't have to hear about the famous baseball field trees anymore. Further, it is part of his overall plan to clear out any parkland so that he can put up expensive condo's on the cleared land. And yes, Plofker is his sock puppet. Remember: ROC = Remsen On Crack.

Still the smoking gun in this matter is that teddy bear. If we could recover that all bear and get the dna evidence we would be able to convict. But I saw Ed Remsen in the Meadowlands last night with a yellow bear and a bag of concrete

Remsen was seen substituting bad concrete for good and selling the good concrete to fund MEDC's efforts to destroy beautiful homes and replace them with long-term storage units.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2006 11:55 AM

Long term storage units will be necessary for those of us displaced. What are the taxes on a long term storage unit in middle Montclair? Maybe I could live there

Posted by nothing wrong with longterm storage | September 18, 2006 12:39 PM

It's much cheaper to rent a long term storage unit in Hackensack.

For the price of a long term storage unit in Montclair you can get a nice one bedroom apartment in Bloomfield. Did you know that Bloomfield has rent-control?
