Duck and Cover, 2006 Version

Wednesday, October 18, 2006

duckandcover.jpgAll four of Glen Ridge's public schools held a lockdown drill* yesterday. Apparently it went better than this one. A response to the horrors of Columbine, the recent Amish shooting tragedy and other school-based bloodbaths, a lockdown drill, as our 18 year old describes it, is "no big deal": you just lock the door, and everybody crouches in the corner of the room out of gun range.

Not so different than the famous "duck and cover" drills that we baby boomers went through in the 1960's. Or is it? And, pray tell, how do they explain this to the kindergarteners?

Discuss.

*October 18, 2006

Dear Glen Ridge Parent/Guardian:

Yesterday, the Glen Ridge Public Schools in partnership with the Glen Ridge Police Department held security lockdown drills in all of our buildings. The police were present to observe and review the actions of our students, staff, and administration. I am happy to report that the police were very impressed with how fast and professional everyone responded to this unannounced drill. Everyone in our district works hard to make sure students feel safe and are safe in our schools. We will continue to have these unfortunate, yet necessary drills and work with all public safety officials to insure that all employees and students are safe.

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions. Thank you for your support and understanding.

Daniel Fishbein, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

"Out of gun range."

YOU
HAVE
GOT
TO
BE
KIDDING
ME

Hiding under a desk won't save your ass. Sorry.

How about lock the door, throw a desk through the window and evacuate. I rather try my luck at a 10 foot jump than sitting out of gun range in a corner in the school.

Off course we can not afford to practice this drill.

Don't be rash. Obviously, the thing to do would be to get Jimmy Carter to engage in 2 party talks with the gunman.

Or we could follow the Bush Doctrine of staying the course no matter how bad it gets.

..but would a locked door stop Deadeye Dick Cheney?

"Hiding under a desk won't save your ass. Sorry."

No, but it probably makes it easier to kiss it goodbye.

"Under the desk" is just another euphamism for "in the closet". This is another examples of the Gay agenda infiltrating our schools!

Whatever you do, don't talk to the gunman. Better to preemptively arrest him and ship him to Gitmo.

What am I thinking? How can anybody joke about this subject. People have died. Respect the dead, who never have any sense of humor.

Aye, ye all be hittin the grog early today I see!

I'm dead and still have a sense of humor. Also I never got any respect.

It is different from the 1960's. In the 1960's there was an imagined threat. At least, it had not actually happened. The drills for protecting ourselves from the imaginary threat would not have protected anyone if that threat actually materialized.

The threat envisioned today has already occurred in other schools. The practice of a response to this threat is reasonable. This is not the first time the schools have held these drills. If the worst should happen, maybe one additional person will not be dead because the school system forced everyone to think ahead about what they would do in a situation.

Also, the school system should be commended for communicating with the parents in this way.

Hiding under a desk might not save your life, but crouching down sure makes it easier to kiss your a$$ goodbye.

Arm the principal and some of his lackey administrators and send them to the Police Academy for target practice. They should shoot it out with any prospective serial killer.

Some schools are teaching students to react aggressively, like all 30 kids run and throw books and chairs at the person and scream bloody murder.
But teach it is better to hid under desk, just like the being on the plane, let the nice terrorist have no problem getting into cockpit.

That could be an appropriate response, depending on the situation.

I think the school districts are trying to address an array of situations (many of which none of us can imagine)

what's wrong with replacing gym class 2 days a week with martial arts and gun education?

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

I'd rather see marital arts & sex education. Make sweet love baby yeah.

We're having a drill in our district this week or next week. Don't know when, but I refreshed myself in how to lock my classroom door.

I just send my kids to school in bullet proof undies. Also they have derringers in their lunchboxes.

Also, the school system should be commended for communicating with the parents in this way.

Except the email was sent the day after the drill, after most parents heard about it from their kids.
The children have been told this drill is in case a sick dog is wandering the halls.

Ice, how many dead students would there have been this past month if the lunatics of the world didn't have such easy access to guns the moment they snapped? There are already millions of guns in US homes right now and they aren't making America a safer place for children. The NRA wants everyone to be able buy at least one gun a month. With 100 million adults that's over a billion more guns a year. Do you really want that?

Considering the number of guns outstanding it is remarkable that there are so few deaths from gunshot wounds. Automobiles are far more lethal than guns.

Yes, we use automobiles every day often for hours for non-lethal purposes and still manage to be careless enough to kill. Thank heavens we don't use lethal weapons as often as cars.

Equating automobiles with guns is something only a moron would conjure up.

The new trend is for public schools to require uniforms. So, just make them out of Kevlar. Then you not only have a good looking bunch of young people, you have a good looking bunch of young people who have a chance of staying alive.

And I thought that I had a big problem simply getting from one class to the next without getting hit by the school bully. Perhaps home schooling isn’t such a bad idea after all. I have an idea. Lock the doors and make sure all visitors are checked in by security. Wow, door locks what a great idea.

My gun has killed fewer people than Ted Kennedy's car.

Right Joke,
If you are killed by a moron driving a car you are better off than someone killed by a moron who misuses a gun.

Yes it be true that there be too many hoglegs out there. Nothing worse than trying to rob and pillage and having some lubber produce a firearm. I've lost more than one shipmate due to that. Ye should be leaving the firearms to those that know what they be doing with them, the King's men and us pirate folk.

My child goes to Linden and his teacher sent home a note describing the drill and the actions her class took. Kudos to the school district and for such a thoughtful teacher!

Shouldn't the superintendant's message read ...how quickly and professionally everyone responded...'?

Where's our grammarian?

My gun has killed fewer people than Laura Bush's car.

My gun has killed fewer people than TV talk shows.

My gun has peppered fewer well connected Republican attorneys with bird shot than Dick Cheney's.

"My gun has killed fewer people than Ted Kennedy's car."

Bush/Rumsfeld/Cheney Administration policies have killed more people than your gun and Teddy Kennedy's car combined.

Gunslinger, I'm sure the guy who was cleaning his M-16 (below)and the 40 other accidental shooters this past month said something just as stupid shortly before they killed someone.

Sep 25, 2006, SAN ANTONIO – A man who accidentally killed his neighbor when his M16 rifle fired while he was cleaning it could face a charge of criminally negligent homicide, police said. Jesse Hernandez, 35, said he accidentally shot neighbor Saulo Garcia on Saturday when the bullet from his M16 rifle pierced a bedroom wall and a headboard and struck Mr. Garcia, 24, in the head while he slept. Mr. Garcia's wife found him when she returned home about 30 minutes later.

"If you are killed by a moron driving a car you are better off than someone killed by a moron who misuses a gun."

You're just as dead. This statement makes sense. Oh, no it doesn't, nevermind.

This statement makes perfect sense if the moron has car insurance

The Dickerts are still alive to say something just as stupid (Just as tens of thousands in similar situations are each year. The cops aren't always 2 minutes away. Sometimes even that's too long.).

I ain’t playing,” said an armed intruder, who also used an expletive as he barged inside George Dickert’s South Carolina home. According to police reports, the intruder pointed a gun at Dickert, who reached for his own gun. A fistfight ensued. “[My wife and I] do what we have to do to make a living and some idiot decided he wanted what I had,” Dickert said. Hearing the struggle, two more men rushed into the house and began beating on Dickert. But Dickert’s son also heard the commotion and, after seeing his father struggling with the men, retrieved a .38-caliber pistol from a bedroom, pointed it at his father’s assailants and told them he would shoot. The thugs ran from the home without further incident. Police apprehended four men near Dickert’s home in connection with the crime and were seeking a fifth. Dickert says he taught his son firearm safety at a young age. (Fox21.com, 07/20/06)

Thanks, E.G.....inspiring story.

LET'S GO METSSSSSS!!!!!!!

Here's some more inspiring stories about the advantages of teaching your children how to use a gun...

Sept. 29, 2006: Eric Hainstock, 15, took two guns to a school in rural Cazenovia, Wis., and fatally shot the principal, a day after the principal gave him a disciplinary warning for having tobacco on school grounds, police said.

March 21, 2005: Jeff Weise, 16, shot and killed five schoolmates, a teacher and an unarmed guard at a high school on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota before taking his own life. Weise had earlier killed his grandfather and his grandfather's companion.

Nov. 22, 2004: Desmond Keels, 16, is accused of fatally shooting one student and wounding three others outside Strawberry Mansion High in Philadelphia. The attack apparently was over a $50 debt in a rap contest. Keels is to stand trial for murder later this month.

April 24, 2003: James Sheets, 14, shot and killed the principal in the crowded cafeteria of a junior high school in south-central Pennsylvania, before killing himself.

May 26, 2000: Nathaniel Brazill, 13, killed his English teacher on the last day of classes in Lake Worth, Fla., after the teacher refused to let him talk with two girls in his classroom. He was convicted of second-degree murder and is serving a 28-year sentence.

April 20, 1999: Students Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 23 before killing themselves at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo.

May 21, 1998: Two teenagers were killed and more than 20 people hurt when a teenage boy opened fire at a high school in Springfield, Ore., after killing his parents. Kip Kinkel, 17, was sentenced to nearly 112 years in prison.

March 24, 1998: Two boys, ages 11 and 13, fired on their Jonesboro, Ark., middle school from nearby woods, killing four girls and a teacher and wounding 10 others. Both boys were later convicted of murder and can be held until age 21.

Dec. 1, 1997: Three students were killed and five wounded at a high school in West Paducah, Ky. Michael Carneal, then 14, later pleaded guilty but mentally ill to murder and is serving life in prison.

Oct. 1, 1997: Luke Woodham, 16, of Pearl, Miss., fatally shot two students and wounded seven others after stabbing his mother to death. He was sentenced the following year to three life sentences.

Owning and using a firearm isn’t rocket science. It also should not be taken lightly or be your first and only line of defense, really it should be the last layer. As we know from one of the other threads, some here don’t lock up the doors to their residences. Those that follow that practice should also avoid firearms ownership and continue to trust in dumb luck. If you do choose to own firearms you should be responsible and get some appropriate training regarding their use/storage and the security continuum. It’s mostly common sense but violations of the rules you will learn can be very costly and haunt you for the rest of your days. Decide to be responsible or pass on owning a firearm.

I have chosen to own firearms (Funny how the importance of Constitutionally related personal choices importance swells and contracts with certain issues, huh?) and I’m currently obligated to due to my occupation. I have also planned to not have my rights violated. With all the posting about terrorist phone intercepts, the governments interest in our library habits and the like it would seem that this is an important issue to many here. So in that vein let me remind you that the only rights that you have, are the ones that you can defend. This defense may be in the Courts with your lawyer or the aclu against Big Brother or it might be in your home facing off physically against the miscreant who is trying to take your portable electronics, money, pussy or life. If that criminal decides to use more force than you are able to muster at that moment, your rights shall be violated. For myself, I have decided that grabbing the phone and dialing 911 is not going to be my only action. I don’t want to trust that the 5, 6 or 7 police cars that are on the road aren’t already engaged in other matters. I don’t want to wait minutes for something that may be decided in seconds. I have decided to, if possible, utilize my Constitutional rights (some might read them as a duty) to protect those rights and the lives of my family and myself. This may not be something others choose to do, I respect that, but don’t infringe on my right to do so. If the offender completes his mission, your rights have been violated. Even if he is caught that doesn’t change, the best that can happen is that you confront him in Court and he pays for that violation. The down side is that we may be posting here about whether your killer deserves a trial or not.
Whether you teach younger people to use a gun, or they learn well enough how to from the video games they play and then go do crime with the knowledge, is part of the problem. If they are denied access to the firearms you will prevent these incidents. If you own weapons, be very responsible, use and store them properly. Due to all the emotion and skewed numbers involved it is hard to be sure, but the reading I’ve done suggests that private ownership prevents/hinders many crimes and saves many lives, most likely more than are taken accidentally or maliciously. I don’t believe a ban on legal ownership is justified. Start along that road and then, logically, you have to ban other items that people use improperly. Swimming pools for instance. Many more children die accidentally in them than are shot accidentally. Would a ban on firearms end up being as effective as the ban on illegal drugs? It would be really nice for “daddy” to take care of us all, all the time. But I’m really not comfortable with turning over all my safety to my local, state and federal lawmakers. Judging from a great many of the posts here, I don’t think most of you are either.

More wind there than in a nor'easter me thinks. Ye wouldn't be callin me a miscreant now would ya?
