Bad Babysitter!

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

Yesterday afternoon, a five month old baby boy was found alone in a car parked at Bloomfield's Home Depot. Captain Chris Goul at BPD tells Baristanet a shopper spotted the sleeping baby and a dog in a vehicle and reported it to an off-duty Bloomfield police officer working there.

The officer immediately went out to the car, removed the baby and turned him over to security. "We don't know how long the baby was left there, but the hood of the car was ice cold," says Goul. Minutes later, when security went back outside to check on the car, it was gone.

The baby was taken by ambulance to Mountainside Hospital, determined to be in good health, and turned over to the Division of Youth and Family Services. The pet was taken to Bukowski Animal Shelter.

Where were the parents? Captain Goul says from the store's security video, it appears that the driver of the car saw what was happening and took off to get the baby's mother. Mother Paulette Williams, 35, of East Orange and driver Carlos Lizarbe, 39, of Newark both appeared at police headquarters within the hour to get the baby back. That was not going to happen. Williams explained she had entrusted her baby's care to Lizarbe when he went on an errand. Lizarbe was arrested and charged with endangerment of a minor. Williams had $5,000 of outstanding warrants and was also arrested.

Thank god they didn't take the baby to the Bukowski Animal Shelter!

LOL, Anne.

I can't believe the brains some people have. Who leaves an infant unattended in a car in December?

Maybe the parents trained the dog to watch the baby ...

I think when it comes to taking care of their young, dogs have more common sense!

Posted by Miss Martta | December 5, 2006 10:56 AM

So the mother, who is not present doesn't get her baby or her dog back? I don't understand this.

Posted by Confused | December 5, 2006 10:58 AM

Mother from East Orange. $5,000 in outstanding warrants. I'm taking a guess the dog was a pit bull, normally chained to a tree or runs around a 10x10 chain link fence all day long, for protection.

The article doesn't say what the warrants were for so why doesn't she get her kid back?

Posted by silly | December 5, 2006 11:02 AM

You can be sure she'll get a 20% refund on her property taxes.

Due to her having outstanding warrants I would imagine that a warrant for her arrest may have been issued due to lack of payment on the original warrants. Let's face it, neither one of them sound like they are wrapped right - maybe it was preventive? I'm sure there are behind the scene issues that we are not aware of.

how can she get the kid back when she's under arrest.

Do you think that the child should be given to her while she's in jail?

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2006 11:21 AM

She left her child in the care of someone who acted negligent. I don't think she should get her kid back, at least not until she undergoes parenting classes.

I was confused about the role of the mother too, but when I read it again I think this part indicates the mother could have been there at the Home Depot too:

"Captain Ghoul says from the store's security video, it appears that the driver of the car saw what was happening and took off to get the baby's mother."

If I was a super-hero my name would be "Captain Ghoul."

he was driving when he took off- the car was gone- he took off to east Orange not back into the home depot

The mother should write some poetry. It'll make her a better mom.

Just to clarify...the mom wasn't at Home Depot. The driver drove off from the parking lot alone.

BPD didn't have information on the mother's outstanding warrants.

The only good news in this story is that someone cared enough to get involved.

"BPD didn't have information on the mother's outstanding warrants."
Should read "didn't release information" When a warrant check is done the reason and or charges shows on the computer as well as the bail amounts and Anne above is correct there is some more behind the scenes on this woman

Goul, not "Ghoul," you fiends! Have some respect for the boys in blue

I just want to express my appreciation to officer Munoz and detective Ricci for the way they handled this strange situation last night. They were very professional and showed great concern for the baby. I bet they are fathers and I mean good fathers themselves. There were other officers there also they all were great. I couldn't believe how irresponsible someone could be leaving a baby in the cold like that.

I can only thank God that this happened in early December instead of January during a cold snap, or over the summer on a hot day.

Every year I read of children left in their cars in the summer where the inside temperatures can reach 120 degrees after 30 minutes parked on an 85 degree day. Children have died, and many many many pets have died from such negligence.

Car temperatures on a hot day

I hope the penalties are stiff for the individuals involved in this.

Hey this was in the Ledger but wasn't mentioned here yesterday. The Montclair Cops deserve a pat on the back for dealing well with this incident. This nut Leroy Doctor II is lucky he wasn't shot.

MONTCLAIR: A 27-year-old West Orange man was arrested after a traffic stop during which he pretended to have a gun and threatened police before fleeing into backyards, authorities said yesterday. "I gotta gun, I'm gonna shoot you," was the driver's threat when he was stopped late Thursday near Mission Street and Bloomfield Avenue, Lt. James Carlucci said.

The assailant raised his hands, covered in a black tube sock, and claimed he had a weapon while screaming the threat, police said.

Authorities said the suspect -- identified as Leroy Doctor II -- managed to break free of an officer's grasp and flee through Glenfield Park, pointing at the officer with his covered hand and shouting, "Shoot me, I can't go back to jail."

The man fled through rear yards on Woodland Avenue be fore being tackled by officer Christopher Locklear, Carlucci said. The suspect, police said, managed to escape again before being recaptured.

The man was held in lieu of $50,000 bail after being charged with making terroristic threats, resisting arrest, hindering apprehension and aggravated assault on a police officer.

"In light of Doctor's reckless actions and blatant disregard for the safety of all involved, the officers showed tremendous restraint in not discharging their firearms," Carlucci said.

"...showed tremendous restraint in not discharging their firearms."

Sounds like that is quite the understatement.

And another baby left in the cold. Do we have a sick self-important society or what?
