RIP Carvel

Saturday, December 9, 2006

We saw the writing on the wall a year ago.

carvel.JPG

Still, try and explain to a four-year-old why her favorite, walk-to ice cream place is gone. Actually she came home from preschool and breathlessly explained it to me. "Mommy, Carvel is gone forever. It went away because Cold Stone is too popular."

Then the tears started streaming down her sad, sweet little face. This lasted a good 15 minutes, during which I held her, rubbed her back and offered consolation (Dunking Donuts has Baskin Robbins), bribes (maybe you get a donut and an ice cream cone) and finally, in between sobs, a deal with the devil (maybe Mommy can buy you an $8 ice cream cone from Cold Stone).

Anyone else feeling the pain?

Fortunately, the kid likes Applegate Farm, which now has its seasonal flavors -- frozen hot chocolate, peppermint stick and eggnog -- out for scooping.

Where once it was a tossup between run of the mill plastic-tasting "ice cream" and expensive plastic-tasting "ice cream", it's now just the expensive kind, plus the Baskin-Donut place. Aren't there any good frozen custard places nearby?

Is your four year old rotund yet?

Applegate! Now your talkin!!

Things come, things go.

Luckily, she was spared the pain of having to witness a catastrophic drop in the market value of a Beanie Baby collection.

You know what they should put in that space now that Carvel is gone? A bank. The upper montclair biz district just won't feel complete until we've got an even dozen bank branches.

I was begining to think I was the only person in town who had a problem with paying $8 for ice cream. I guess I was right.
I masses have spoken.
RIP Carvel
You will be missed.

Make the trip down Watchung to Holsten's in Bloomfield. Very good ice cream made right there. Mmm

Posted by E.G. | December 9, 2006 10:06 AM

And Applegate is indeed a couple notches better than Carvel or Coldstone. Vanilla malted shake!

My kids go to Dr. Mason across the street and he always gives out coupons for Carvels with every kids check up. Where will I go for my "Fudgie the Whale" and "Cookie Puss ice cream cakes?"

Posted by caris | December 9, 2006 10:38 AM

They should put affordable housing there.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2006 10:47 AM

"Is your four year old rotund yet?"

Boy are you obsessive. The child walks to and from the place. No where does it say she goes there more than once a week or once a month or that she consumes pints at a time. I've eaten ice cream for decades and I'm not rotund. I work with a woman who eats ice cream everyday and most women would envy her figure.
Eating lettuce will make you rotund because the body stores fat when it thinks you are starving it.

Anyone know if any places carry Sedutto's ice cream? In my former NY/Hampton's days, their FAT FREE CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER had become a way of life, and I haven't found it anywhere in NJ.

If you miss Carvel sooooooooooooooooo much you can get it in West Orange.

Applegate:
One scoop cinnamon with one scoop of either dutch apple or pumpkin. Yummy.

Hard for me to feel sympathy for a chain, as opposed to a mom & pop store. Their ice cream was just meh, too.

Move to Rutherford. Still got an honest-to-goodness Dairy Queen. Lotsa real hotels down in the Meadowlands too.

Liz, you're way too soft on the kid. She needs to know the facts of life in our free-market society. Carvel is gone. The man who used to work there now can't afford to stay in Montclair because his taxes are too high. He now has to live and work in Irvington at half the wages. His kids don't have new shoes or and when they get really sick they go to the emergency room. But that's okay, it's better for all of us in the long run. If you don't like it, get your MBA! (Whatever you do, don't be a journalist like your uncle Walleroo.)

Another victory for the big corporate franchises! Maybe when Olive Garden & Macaroni Grill push Giotto & Fashino out of Montclair eyes will open. Bye Montclair, I'll never forget you!

Posted by Fudgy the Whale | December 9, 2006 2:11 PM

Carvel used to be owned by this nice fellow who always had a good word for everyone. He sold, and I believe he retired after many years.

Why was he able to make a go of it and the current management couldn't? Did Coldstone do them in?

When will Wood's return?

Posted by Bitpusher | December 9, 2006 2:50 PM

I'm sad. EVERY birthday in my house featured a Carvel ice cream cake (with double crunchies!).

And every Wed. was sundae-- 2 for 1? C'mon. We went, no lie, for about 8 months straight.

Loved Carvel. Never too crowded--- and that was the problem I guess......

Any word on whether Woods is ever coming back?

Posted by profwilliams | December 9, 2006 2:52 PM

How curious! Last time I was there (in October) the gent behind the counter told me he was going to close up for a couple of months for remodeling, then reopen around Feb. or March. (This was after I asked him about whether he was still moving to Bloomfield Ave., and he said no...staying put.)

Stange. Yes, we will miss them, if in fact it's permanent! :(

So I will.

I like the bank idea. In fact, they should turn Applegate's into a bank/ice cream drive-in because at Applegates you need oodles of money.

Posted by Johnny | December 9, 2006 3:48 PM

Sad times, indeed.. That Carvel was an institution there for the longest I can remember... Though I did distinctly notice the prices going up and the cleanliness and renovations "naaah so much" in contrast over the last two or three years. Think I paid about $9 for two ice creams in there just last summer. For those prices, it's only a short jump to Coldstone!

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2006 5:25 PM

Mr. Carvel's commercials for his special occasion ice cream cakes sure dampened any interest I might have in his products.

Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2006 5:55 PM

Coldstone replaced Carvel, and Carvel replaced mom-and-pop soda fountain shops. The world changes, but human nature often resists ...

Posted by Capitalist Tool | December 9, 2006 5:59 PM

I live 5 blocks away from Woods' Ice Cream, and the word around here is that it's not coming back.

It's unfortunate that another piece of my Montclair childhood is gone forever. I guess Holsten's is the place to go for old fashioned ice cream.

Posted by Montclair 1967 | December 9, 2006 6:07 PM

I didn't know that Montclair would house such commonality! Oh well.

Posted by ikanwrite | December 9, 2006 6:09 PM

I can't wait for all these "hidings" 10 years from now
I miss the fill in the blank Olympic shop, Carvel, The Book Store etc etc

Posted by Rocnot | December 9, 2006 7:11 PM

Does anyone remember the Emack & Bolio that was across the street? 3 places selling ice cream in a 2 block area is too many, and I guess it's been proven. I'll miss them.

Theres a carvel in nutley , on franklin .

There has been a sign in the window for a new Carvel on Bloomfield Ave at Bloomfield Center, by Quiznos, but the sign appeared in the Spring and there has been no sign of construction.

Until that one opens (and I doubt it will), we have to try to keep the West Orange one in business.

Posted by silly | December 9, 2006 10:23 PM

Great. Now our only options are eternal lines at Applegate with no place to sit or having to deal with obnoxious bores on line for overpriced cold stone. Progress indeed.

We will miss you, CookiePus!

You forgot Holstens - good ice cram - good service- place to sit

I used to live above Carvel for 11 years, and I'm sorry to hear that it's going. Yes it's a corporate store and but it was owned by a private owner. So saying you have no sympathy for corporations has nothing to do with this Carvel. The nice old man who used to own it also owns the tiny apartments I used to live in and he sold Carvel to the Sue family. Who had two daughters who went through the Montclair school system until they couldn’t afford to live here anymore an had to move. So saying that it isn't a family business isn't true. I'm sad to see Carvel go because it was my playground for 11 years. And before anyone makes a joke comment like "Get a yard." get over yourself, because some people used to be able to live in Montclair and pay a reasonable rent, but still get the benefits of a great, diverse town...which by the way is losing its charm at a fast rate an seems to resemble the untainted white community of Glen Ridge. So before half of you get on your high horses and say that this doesn't matter because big business, blah blah blah...this does matter, because the people that loved Montclair for all its possibilities and charm see how it has fallen into the money obsessed, big business world most Montclair residents came to get away from. And it’s sad to think that now they have to get away from Montclair, but wouldn’t you if your taxes equal the amount you bought your house for.

R.I.P. Carvel and good luck to the Sue family!!!

Adieu my old pals Cookie Puss and Fudgie the Whale. You brought many a smile -- not to mention the first "hit" song for a band whose "license to ill" has run hs run with unbelieveable longevity.

The only thing with Emack & Bolio was that the guy
brought in all the ice cream from New England and he was only open from April till October stealing all that ice cream business. Joe, the owner was a nice enough guy. He had money to burn and he was bored.
That's why he opened Emack. Not out of love for his product

The Emack in Verona was closed for the winter also. Must be a franchise rule. They only lasted a short time also.

I can't tell you how depressing this is for me. I worked at thia Carvel through it's first 3 owners. Those were the best years of my life from junior year in college through my late twenties. I was the main cake decorator there, and boy do I have a ton of great memories of the place. I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't worked there.

WOW, how sad! I worked at Carvel for 4 years in a row during the summers between college. I had the best of times there and two of my best friends used to work there with me. Needless to say, we had many sprinkle, icing, writing gel, chocolate crunchie and entire ice cream cake FIGHTS!!!! Yes, it was a blast!God I will miss that place. I remember when I was in middle school softball after a game we would go into carvel and out coach would but us all a cone! I ALWAYS got the rainbow sprinkle cone with mint chocolate chip in it! Years later I would serve the softball players and reminisce. I loved working for Mr. Suh and his wife. He was always so caring and such a wonderful man to work for. He was very thoughtful and bought me some school supplies before the begining of each fall semester. He is a wonderful father and their family is so close. I remember giggling over his Koren accent and the funny way he had of interpreting. For instance, my friend chrissy worked there, and he would call her "Christ" because he didnt understand how to say her name. It was quite endearing. Man I will miss that place and that family. Some of my fondest memories by far!!! I believe his family still owns the carvel on Franklin ave in Nutley. God bless them this holiday season and always!

Holsten's is the best, quality-wise. They make it there, great texture and flavor and no synthetic aftertaste. But despite the Sting-era, panelling, with those flourescent lights - depressing.

Applegate: An olde tyme farm-y verdant pastoral island - within an ocean of asphalt. And it stinks of old milk. Yumm.

Anyone remember Taylor's?

What about Bond's and the Awful Awful? When I was at MHS it was across from what is now the CVS in Upper. And speaking of the CVS in Upper, that used to be a Green Stamps Redemption Center, a beauty salon and the Toy Chest (a real, old fashioned, affordable toy store)

The Awful Awful was AWESOME

Emack in Upper Montclair had a great item: coconut almond ice cream, and as a hot fudge sundae it was a chilled version of an Almond Joy! I tried to replicate it at Emack in Summit but it wasn't the same.

I hear that Plofker and Larry Flint are buying the Carvel store and plan to build a 12 story sex emporeum. They recently had a closed door session with the Concil to show some of the planned products. Gerry Tobin was highly complementary of the wide selection of flavored lubes.

I think I have a Bond's key chain here somewhere. My grandfather used to take me. I remember the pickle slices. And the Toy Chest- still have a model plane from there. Carvel's is like so many places we lament losing- when was the last time anyone went there?
