Bloomfield's Random Acts Of Smashing

Monday, February 12, 2007

Police have zeroed in on the Sunday night smashers and it looks like an inside (town, that is) job. Oh, and there's a video, too. More from Bloomfield's Independent Press...

However, the suspects’ apparent familiarity with the streets of Bloomfield, police said, might mean that an in-town group of youths would be the most likely suspects. * Goul said that whereas most of the previous car-window smashings in town were to facilitate thefts from cars or of the cars themselves, this single, directionless spree was something that was unprecedented in Bloomfield. No particular make or model of car was targeted, and “everything from a 1983 Buick to a Volvo” had windows smashed.

“These were just senseless, random acts,” Goul said.

Goul said police have received a video from an eyewitness which features the suspect vehicle. The BPD plans to submit the tape to the state police lab in Hamilton to be enhanced for a better visualization of the car — or the car’s license plate number.

In the meantime, the BPD Detective Unit and Youth Aid Bureau are collaborating on the case, since the suspects are believed to be between the ages of 17 and 21.

If caught, charges against the culprits would likely be for 17 separate counts of criminal mischief; however, when combined, it could add up to a third-degree crime.

The perpetrators will come forward on their own, along with their parents and lawyers in tow. They'll arrange a plea bargain which will include substance abuse intervention and community service.

"...since the suspects are believed to be between the ages of 17 and 21."

"" The perpetrators will come forward on their own, along with their parents and lawyers in tow. They'll arrange a plea bargain which will include substance abuse intervention and community service.""

To which, I say...Screw THAT B.S.
Lets cough up the $$ to each & every car owner to pay to have it fixed and an extra fifty bucks for their time & trouble, in so doing.
THAT'S the ONLY fair way! Screw the community service garbage that they'll fake, anyhow. Retrobution to the harmed, NOT to the strangers.

Little Punks in their little foreign rice burners.
No sympathy here, not a pennys worth. Sorry.

You played, now ya pay, period.

Nothing warms my little black heart as much as seeing a teenage boy cry.

Nonsense. They are adults. Treat them as such. I don't know any 17-year olds these days that could be classified as youngsters. You wanna play, you pay..

Agreed. Certainly old enough to know the difference between right and wrong.

And I agree with the poster above: The repair money should come out of their OWN pockets and not their parents'.

Between this story of random destruction - and the story of the teen in the Utah mall - where have we failed these kids?

Thank you Mom for the constant threat that you would snap my legs off if I pulled any stupid stunts like destroying public property.

My sympathy to the families in Utah.

Yo. hrhppg: You seem to believe that, if these presumably youthful perps had the kind of upbringing that you had, they wouldn't break windows randomly with a bunch of idiot friends.
Evidence suggests the contrary: two children adapted by a family at birth and sharing essentially the same home environment will turn out as different as any two strangers.
Also, you seem to suggest that threats, such as your aunt made, will help. Evidence to the contrary: We all know that a lot of people who do bad things often had LOTS of threats and worse.

Then what's the answer, Fred?

Posted by Anonymous | February 13, 2007 3:29 PM

Good question. Current evidence suggests that one's peer group and one's genetic makeup are the primary determinants of how kids are gonna be as adults. So, the best things that parents can do is put kids in environments where they are likely to form peer relationships with reasonably behaving kids. Genes are a done deal.
