A solid week of subfreezing temperature has its upside. Scot Surbeck snapped this shot yesterday at Edgemont Park in Montclair, where lovers and families took to the ice (at least one took to the ice with a stroller!) into the evening.. Ice-skating, with cocoa available in the field house, continues today from noon to five.

The town put up generator lights Friday and Sat night allowing folks to skate til 10pm...it was magical! We took the family and the dog out...lots of teenagers skating and playing football...good clean fun!

Driving by, it looks so beautiful-- a scene from Currier and Ives-- good to see everybody outdoors and away from their flat-screens and Play Stations.

And computers.

You are experiencing one of the lost treasures of Montclair, enjoy it while it lasts.

Seeing this today made me feel extremely happy. People experiencing simple pleasures. It seemed as if people were intune to what life is really for.

Played pond hockey all day yesterday and today. Wish it would stay frozen through presidents weekend but global warming aint on my side.

Took the kids there yesterday evening. They had a great time. The town even opened up the house and was selling refreshments. They also had a fire to warm up by outside.

It was so unusual and wonderful to do something with our community. Unstructured, disorganized, unscripted and delightfully free-ing. What has happened to our culture that we can't won't don't do this type of activity anymore? Talk about fear. Talk about freedom. Never mind the terrorists. It's the bogeyman in our own towns that have paralyzed America from enjoying their own lives.

Sports Authority is having a terrific clearance sale on ice skates--with free sharpening! I went to the one at Willowbrook--tons of men's skates (will fit older boys too), but sadly very little for girls/women.

Sk8r : what's your choice for a good men's hockey skate ?
