Little Miss Snowday?

UPDATE: See school closings/delayed openings in announcement box.

Watching the Oscars, watching the snow. According to Internet betting, "The Departed" is an easy win tonight. And according to the National Weather Service, there'll be 5 to 7 inches of snow on the ground by tomorrow night. So we're wagering on another snow day.

Here's you open-thread for live blogging the Oscars. And tomorrow morning, if you wake up before we do, drop a note to let your neighbors know if school's open, closed or starting late.

Worst Oscar show ever (Simpsons reference intentional). Even C-Span could be more entertaining right now.

all of the under-eighteens are rooting for another snow day tomorrow - please be kind enough to wear your pijamas inside out tonight to lock in the school closing... its a sure-fire way to get a day off.

Agreed. Boring Oscars. Ellen is awful...and Clint is soooo old:(

I want Leo to win!!!
Is he nominated?

Does anyone have insider info on the snow day? I know that Immaculate Conception is closed...

so what was up with Speilberg kind of mercilessly poking fun at Lucas? I mean, I know it's just Star Wars, but they were friends and worked together.
And it was kind of in front of their Hollywood tribe.
And a few million other peeps.

PJ's inside out and Backwards, silver Spoon under the Pillow and Ice flushed down the Toilet, my kids did it all. Looks like it worked... Maybe

I dunno. Doesn't look that bad out. Main streets are plowed, in Verona anyway.

I agree. Oscars were kinda meh. Who picked Ellen DeeGee to emcee? She was awful! Not funny at all. IMHO, I think Billy Crystal was the best Oscar emcee ever.

I rooted for Jennifer Hudson, though. Glad she won BSA.

Glen Ridge Schools Delayed opening. HS 9:30 Rause 9:45 Forest and Liden 10:00

Montclair schools are closed!! Yay! Back to bed.

I turn on the t.v., not a single school closed. Many delays, yes; but no schools closed. Thinking that I'll be able to get something accomplished today I double check the BOE website. Montclairs schools closed! 15 grand a year in taxes and they can't get their act together. Well done.

Hey, what happens if it snows on the day Glenfield has to take the GEPA, the standardized tests?

They told the kids they couldn't participate in the Science Olympiad, an opportunity the earned via hard work, cause they needed them at the school, but what if it snows?

What are they going to do then, call in the National Guard?

Heads need to roll.

Schools closed after we get 3 INCHES OF SNOW??????

Wow. We moved out here from Brooklyn 6 months ago. Montclair sure is quick to close schools. Back whn I was young you had to have more than 3 inches of snow to close school. . .

They should rename the town Montclose. Did Frank Alvarez just want an extra few hours of sleep?

Bloomfield has a 90 minute delayed opening.

Frank Alvarez we demand an explanation! Here. Now!

nutley 1 hr delay
s. orange/maplewood, 1 hr.
verona 1 hr.
bloomfield 90 mins.

Helloooo????

Anyone know if Montclair Coop School is also closed?

We need an overall change in philosophy in Montclair for all town services. Minimal service for maximum taxes is unacceptable. It is predictable that there would be a snow day here and nowhere else. The school system inevitably takes the easy way out.

It's just one snow day folks. Spending a day with your kids is not the end of the world. Who knows, maybe they'll actually get to know you!

My kids were off ALL WEEK last week. I "know" them quite well, thank you!

it's not 'just one snow day.' exscuse me, but some familise in montclair, both parents work and when montclair BOE pulls a bonehead move like this, there are real consequences for lots of people.

"familise" is that how it's spelled now?

"BOE pulls a bonehead move like this, there are real consequences for lots of people."

And if you are put upon by the SECOND snow day of the year by the end of February, then your expectations are unrealistic.

almost too dumb for words. because it's feb and we get 3 inches of snow schools should be closed because...it's late feb.

whatever.

i'm guessing you're one of the incompetents who works for BOE

I'm thrilled the kids have a snow day but couldn't they let us know a bit earlier? I finally heard the sirens, they sounded sick, at 6:30! This is way too late! By the way, I agree the Oscars were a snore!Too much Botox!

The Children Of Montclair-An Inconvenient Truth

mtcgirl,

1. Check the BOE website. According to the MWC, The school closing was posted by 05:30. I checked it at 06:00 and it was posted then.

2. Check the Baristanet. Latebloomer posted the news at 05:44.

3. Try calling the BOE Number. I'm not sure what it is. maybe someone could post it.

4. If your school doesn't have a snow chain, ask a friend or neighbor whose kid's school does have one to give you a call when there is a closing or a delayed opening.

All of the schools should have the option of a snow chain or some for of automatic phone notification for those families that don't have internet access.

bonehead = keeping children safe and at home

BOE pulls a bonehead move like this, there are real consequences for lots of people.

Until someone's kid has a slip-and-fall or car accident and the family threatens legal action. You can't make everyone happy all the time ...

good lord, why open schools at all?? i mean if bobby and jane might get injured from 3 inches of snow, why don't we close the schools when it rains or it's windy.

Or if the sun is shining too brightly they can get skin cancer.

"good lord, why open schools at all?? i mean if bobby and jane might get injured from 3 inches of snow, why don't we close the schools when it rains or it's windy."

Seems that even without the snow day not all the children would be in school.

This is a disgrace. above freezing temperatures, barely two inches of snow and schools are closed ???

Seriously, who is the person responsible for making such a stupid call ?

Keep in mind, Montclair was the ONLY town in Essex county to close schools today.

973-509-4000

if a man picks up, its either delay or snowday.

if a woman picks up, there's school as usual.

thanks to all of those pijama wearers... i speak for the entirety of montclair high when i say we'd gladly spend twenty minutes shoveling rather than go to chemistry.

Global Warming Alert.

Idiot people arguing over an inconveinient truth. Cold weather and snowfall usually cripple this place.

Wonder how many private jets and stretch hummer limo's were outside the kodak last night?

Any idea mr gore?

We are very important people spreading very important ideas. We need to get to the very important places quickly to spread these very important ideas. It's very important. Worrying about suffering through another day with your annoying offspring isn't important, maybe not even worth the coal that is burning to power your computers. Shut them off! I Al Snore, Oscar winner, command it!

West Orange and Livingston are 2 other Essex districts that are closed today, "hiding".

call any of the schools...press 6 for school closings. I called Glenfield # at 6am, and closing was posted.

Montclair is too "trigger happy" when it comes to closing schools. It's a real quality of life issue for many of us who need to get to our jobs and can't afford to have needless snow days, such as today. There's no reason why schools couldn't have just delayed opening one hour today. I love spending time with my kids, but I also want them to be in school and learning. Between all the holidays, the breaks throughout the school year, the teacher vacations known as "teacher conferences," and the snow days, our kids are out of school nearly as much as they are in school. Come on BoE, get serious about education in our town!

West Orange is closed also.

Yup, they ARE out of school as much as they're in. They are required to have 180 days of school, a law that's been in effect throughout the state for many years.

The school is not your babysitter. You decided to have kids, deal with it.

Maybe it's the Montclair men that are "trigger happy". All these pesky kids around we don't know what to do with when the nanny isn't available.

http://www.vasectomy.com/index.htm

Even some of us who don't have kids are shaking our heads about the Board's call on this one.

the fact that i just went for a jog at 2pm on a supposed snow day because the roads were BONE DRY begs the question, what was the BOE thinking?

Hmm, it's not going to snow much, but winter's almost over and we've only had one snow day... What the heck!

If they kept the schools open today this thread would have just as many complaints about that. Just deal with it people. I saw lots of snow people on front lawns today, even a whole snow family with the family pet on Bellevue Ave. I sure most kids will have a more pleasant memory of the snowman they made today than of what they would of learned in school with a delayed opening, shorten classes, reschedule classes and basic chaos. Do you children tell you about delayed opening days?

My kids spent the entire day playing outside in the snow with their friends. It was time well spent. Much more valuable than sitting in a classroom doing nothing, which seems to be happening a lot lately.

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization committed to achieving a freer, more prosperous Tennessee through free market policy solutions, issued a press release late Monday:

Last night, Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.

Gore’s mansion, [20-room, eight-bathroom] located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.

In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

SOS, different politician

Re: Gore

There's a lot of gas to be let out of that bag.

He looked like a balloon at the Macy's Parade.

The TCPR sounds like they have an agenda similar to Stephan Moore's Club for Growth. And the Gore story was foisted upon us by Matt Drudge, an irresponsible muckracker who wants to be a journalist. Manipulated statistics don't tell the whole truth.

Check it out: http://www.tennesseepolicy.org/main/page.php

Or get the figures from the power company yourself. Could al be true considering his past use (and excuses for) use of private jets. The man is a hypocrite, deal with it.

On the note about Watchung woes from Mike, and the response from the township,
did you check the website that was mentioned? It has many ideas about crime reduction at low cost. Does Montclair do any of this?

Marcus
