There was trouble again at a Montclair High sporting event last night. This report just came to us from Detective Lieutenant Carlucci at MPD.
February 28, around 9:30 p.m. Montclair High was playing West Orange High in a basketball game. There was a group of about 100 juveniles and adults outside and several small arguments began. At one point a larger fight erupted in which a 16 year old West Orange resident was attacked by several youths, one of them struck the victim over the head with a bottle. The victim was transported to Mountainside Hospital by the Montclair Ambulance Unit and was treated and released for minor abrasions. A witness recorded the incident on a cell phone. Based on the video the following persons were charged: Marquies Lindsey, 20, Nicholas Miller, 18, Robert Morton, 18, and a 17 year old Juvenile. All suspects are Montclair residents. All were charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose and Riot. All suspects are currently at large. Also found at the scene was a silver, Crossman Pellet Gun. Due to the size of the crowd and continuous fights, officers on scene dispersed OC in the direction of the fighting groups, which assisted in clearing the area.
We are trying to reach John Porcelli, Assistant Principal of Student Activities and Athletics to get more on this story.

did anyone hear about a riot at the Montclair High basket ball game last night?

HUH !
"This report just came to us from Detective Lieutenant Carlucci at MPD."
BaristaNet coffee mug for that cell phone video.
You know, I saw this last night, I was wondering what all the cops were doing there. I was glad I wasn't caught up with all the traffic they were holding up on Chestnut, just missed it.
Detective Lieutenant Carlucci at MPD is Hiding in Baristaville? WOW!
officers on scene dispersed OC in the direction of the fighting groups
What is OC?
Thought a perp was charged when he was caught?
OC = Pepper Spray Oleoresin capsicum (OC)
OC = Obnoxious Catcalls
Orange County
I was driving by last night and saw alot of "foot traffic" around the school around 8:30.
Didn't know what was going on, but it looked like alot of groups were starting to congregate around Chestnut Street and Midland coming from all directions.
More and more like Newark everyday. BaristaHood. Maybe the same punks made it down to the Watchung Train Station.
Now you know why realtors aviod the high school when showing prospective buyer the town. Gotta love the diversity.
You people are such lames. you have nothing else to do with you time but focus on what highschool students do and how they do it. havent you all graduated higschool? move on with your lives, leave us alone and stop invading our privacy with all your little bullshit chatter.

Time to close the high school
and by the way i didnt meant to post that 4 times, this website sucks.

YOUNG OG, somebody told me you a faig!
Concerned-
Stop blaming diversity. In a large population there are some bad seeds, so don't generalize with "Gotta love the diversity." If you don't like "diversity" MOVE. Blame the parents, blame the school for not keeping control, blame the kids for not taking responsibility for their actions, but don't make yourself out to be a better person and blam diversity.
White is right
listen, we are all just a bunch of kids trying to ust have fun while we still can and sometimes fights will arise...you people can't act like you've never seen people fight in high school before, it's high school! Just because 3 people got arrested last night doesn't mean that the other 1,997 some odd kids at the high school are bad kids. The diversity at MHS is great, i have 3 black best friends, and 2 white ones, and I'm white. I was just accepted to a great college and I hope to have a successful life, and I wrote my college essay about the diversity at Mhs....so back off old people. Kids will be kids, deal with it.
are we supposed to take advice from someone named Drool Monkey?
So right, 07love. I am an "old people" who graduated high school in the 60's and there were many fights, mostly after sporting events. I wasn't an angel but there were alot of my friends who wouldn't get involved. Many of us went on to college and good jobs. And we weren't nearly as committed to diversity as many of today's high schoolers.

The posts on this site are some of the most racists I've ever seen. One fight at a high school game and someone blames "diversity," no doubt a thinly-veiled bigoted comment. This is why the Watercooler is moderated. I still don't understand why crap like this is allowed on this site.
Hmm the lovely Montclair thugs are at it again. Can't someone teach those boys how to fit into society.
"The posts on this site...."
What rock you live under ?
Yes, there is a distinctly racialist (I wouldn't go so far as to throw the word "racist" around) tone to some comments above. Yes, too, however, I much doubt that fights at h.s. athletic events are unknown at ANY high school, they sort of come with the territory. I mean, what, you guys never heard the Beach Boys sing "Be True To Your School?"
But only in Montclair, to my admittedly limited knowledge, do such minor incidents seem to arouse such weeping and gnashing and teeth. (So much of it, in fact, that I end up suspecting so many posters went themselves to boarding schools, where this kind of incidental display of aggressive "school spirit" is probably rare indeed.) But it is not the end of civilization as we know it.
ah yes, it's after 3pm so the kiddies are out in force.
07love, totally agree with you, but it is hard to ignore the idiotic comments made by your classmates. People just need to realize that it's mostly the idiots who post here to try to stir up trouble while the "good" kids have better things to do, so we don't hear from them.
"while the "good" kids have better things to do"
So the MTC parents always say.................
"I still don't understand why crap like this is allowed on this site."
Because it invites clicks which invite advertisers.
Money makes the world go round...
You can say what you will about diversity, but as the Star Ledger article displayed a few months prior, the more "diverse" the schools become, the more white families flee the district. So, to answer a prior poster, yes, whites don't like the diversity, and yes, they vote with their feet. Pretty soon, Montclair will not be as diverse, and will resemble East Orange. Maybe not in 5 years, but more likely 20. That's just the way it is.
And yet there are many in Montclair who want lights at Woodman Field for night football games. Great idea! We could call it "The Friday Night Fights."
maybe we could sell tickets and be able to have the MVAU stand by in case of injury and pay them to do so.
dan, that's the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. montclair is not all of a sudden becoming some sort of multi-racial haven--this happened DECADES ago. and, in fact, it's one of the reasons why some white parents--like my own--moved to montclair in the first place.
I remember this was extremely common after games from 1972 to 1977. Montclair was a mess after the riots. I grew up in the 4th ward and we all traveled as a group to and from schoolgames. It did not matter if you where white or african american, you stayed together after a game, if you were alone in the wrong place at the wrong time you got your ass kicked by out of towners. The police have to be prepared by now and control these areas after games.
Dan, you're in idiot. Let me guess, you moved here from Brooklyn 2 weeks ago?
"And yet there are many in Montclair who want lights at Woodman Field..."
to see the hoodlums in their back yard
Dan, there are various things wrong with your post (mainly its tone), and here's one of them--Montclair is LESS diverse now than it was a few years ago. Speculation is that high housing prices (for both buyers and renters) are driving out lower-income residents, who are in this town more likely to be minorities.
I like to use facts instead of opinions. So I will give you the following Census figures.
Montclair population:
1990 Total 37729
White 24602 65%
Black 11832 31%
Asian 487 1%
Hispanic 808 2%
2000 Total 38977
White 23297 59%
Black 12497 32%
Asian 1228 3%
Hispanic 1995 5%
Don't call me an idiot, call the Census Bureau in Suitland Maryland for comments/remarks.
2007 numbers, were they available (and they must be somewhere--even though the U.S. Census that Dan refers to is only done every 10 years), would likely look different from 2000. The schools have this info, if anyone is truly intested in finding out--they work out the percentages. Even if we use the stats from Dan, the African-American population only rose 1%--I don't see that as statistically significant.
No, but I see the 6% white population drop as significant. I can't access data to 1980, but I would love to find out the population statistics for that census. White people, generally speaking, flee from changing demographics, hence the expression: "white flight". I think this phenomeon is more pronounced in northern states around urban areas, not just NY, but Cleveland, Chicago, and Milwaukee are notorious for white citizens relocating another 10 miles from the city centers every 10 years. When you go the southern states, you witness more true diversity. Southern whites, while typecasted as segregationists, nonetheless tend to live in more integrated neighborhoods. I can cite statistics from places such as Memphis, Nashville, or Birmingham to fortify my premise. While white northerners tend to talk outwardly about living in an integrated society, seldom is it practiced. Montclair is one of the few remaining towns that has a balance, but my point is that balance is eroding on a decenial, if not annual basis.
>>whites don't like the diversity, and yes, they vote with their feet
I wouldn't be so sure about that, Dan. When I first came to Montclair over twenty years ago, one rarely saw any white people, except for members of interracial families, at Nishuane pool. They didn't even come down there when Mountainside Pool was closed for renovations. Now one regularly sees white families swimming there. Whether this represents a change in demographics or a change in the attitude of white people, I don't know. I suspect that it is some of each.
how do you guys not get it? you can argue all you want about if montclair has a higher minority total or not but the point is that fights like these have absolutely nothing to do with racism or diversity. One kid from another school talked badly about MHS so these kids stuck up for themselves...racist? if you people would take some time and stop posting on baristaville for a living you'd see that everyone gets along fine at the high and racism is the last issue that's a really big problem. the only reason i'm on here is because my dad emailed me the link to this article...but i can see that you guys really don't know what you're talking about and it's pathetic
"They didn't even come down there when Mountainside Pool was closed for renovations. "
Essex pool
what was the final score?
whites don't like the diversity
It ain't just whites.
I shopped at the diverse Pathmark on Bloomfield Ave for a couple of decades. Then it suddenly became less diverse. The jewlers in the mall closed and the photo studio that opened in its place did not feature one single white face in its window display. And then the music playing in the supermarket changed from a mix to all soul music. The numbers of white shoppers dropped and I was given such incredulous looks from the non-white staff that I became self-conscious about being often the only white customer in the store. I stuck with it for almost a year but just couldn't take the unwelcoming feeling any more and started shopping in the diverse Pathmark in West Orange. At least until they closed down. Now it's the diverse ShopRight.
you people are just as bad as the kids. if you looked at yourselves youd see the stupid gossip and arguments that drop you down to the levels of highschool students. arent you supposed to be mature adults? arent you supposed to set a good example? instead you pick fights with eachother about which town is better and where its diverse. i attend the HS and it is extreemly diverse, one of the most diverse places you will find. while the students are extreemly crazy and have a great deal of audactiy these days theres not a whole lot that can be done to change all that. just talk to your kids more and try and be a supportive parent, dont stoop to their level by arguing with other parents and going out and getting trashed on friday nights yourself.
and what kind of person hides in baristaville, a fake network used to gossip about teenagers. you still havent graduated highschool yourself that you have to be involved in all this gossip. your saying that your hiding from all the bad things of this town yet here you are involved in the things you try to fight and criticize. hiding in what your trying to hide from. great idea. hiding in hypocracy

Those Asians are starting to over take the town. Time to move!
you all are a bunch of racist, librul no good rich snotty pigs. equality and opportunity is what this country is all about.
Good points, OG. Here's the sad truth--high school never really ends. People are still catty and argumentative and unhealthily competitive when they're grown-ups. I wish it weren't so, but it is.
so you give in to what you believe is the inevidable? thats saying that you cant control fate so why try?
you must believe theres more fight and will power in yourself than that.
I am a manager of the West Orange Basketball team. I first heard of the fight in the "winning" locker room. When i heard who was hit, I was outraged. the lack of security at the the high school was horrendous. The fact that cops came and sprayed mase at the people who were trying to pull away some of the members in the fight is a complete joke. Let us not call the victims of this alterations bums or thugs. The only bum in this situation was the 20 year old "ADULT" who assaulted a "MINOR" with a glass bottle. Not to vindicate the 20 year olds action, but if your four years older than somebody, do you really have to use a weapon to win a fight?. What a disgrace. Everyone who went to the game knows that they had enough excitement watching. We did not want a good game of basketball turning into a street fight. Before I end i want to say that this has nothing to do with West Orange or Montclair. These are both rising towns in my opinion, athletically and academically. The people who are at fault are the ones who were trying to send a message by hitting a minor with a bottle. Anyways I hope what happened after the game did not ruin the game itself. It was one the most gratifying wins of my high school career. And i look forward to more success in the state tournament. Please, no more violence in the schools, because next time it wont just be a few a abrasions to the face
lefty your so confused its not even funny. i was there, inside and outside. your west orange student started the entire altercation by storming the court after your win and then continoued by going outside and talking trash to our fans. the trash talking wouldnt stop and that lead to the beat downs of your students. they started the fighting but they couldnt finnish it. while i agree that a bottle was not needed it would prob. have been just as bad if marc hadnt used a bottle seeing that he is about 6'3 and mabye 300 pounds. the trash talking and court rushing and taunting did not need to happen. an accomplished enough school would be able to take the win as a win and that be enough gratification. they had to just keep running their mouths and they ran them to the wrong fans. we dont play weak and we dont bow down to some smack talkers, especially on our home court. you need to look at your own people and start the criticizing there. dont play with fire if your afraid of getting burned. bad
OG
it is what it is!
Basketball players are animals
"Not to vindicate the 20 year olds action, but if your four years older than somebody, do you really have to use a weapon to win a fight?.
What if the older person is smaller or very insecure? (I hope you're a student because your spelling and punctuation need work. The word vindicate also doesn't make sense in that context.)
Please, no more violence in the schools, because next time it wont just be a few a abrasions to the face.
It already is more than "a few" abrasions to the face. You might be psychologically traumatized by being attacked let alone with glass to the face.
Lefty | March 1, 2007 7:42 PM
Let me clarify something for you, Montclair is full of racist thugs that only know how to respond with violence. I wouldn;t come to a own like montclair for sporting events anymore if I were you, this is nothing new for these people here.garbage cans.
As a senior at Montclair high school (Y07L), I can say from the number of re-enactments and brutal descriptions I heard today that West Orange in fact provoked the entire fight, and should know that on Montclair turf that is an extremely loose move. I will go on to inform you that you fucked up adults are the reason for all your kids acting the same way. Every time I come on here to read about your local gossip all I see is you bringing up racial arguments and whose town is better in the comments of each article. This just goes to show you why your kids are fighting over which town is better and why WO kids had the nerve to act big in our house.

Reminds me of a saying: "In the south whites don't care how close blacks get as long as they don't have any power. In the north, whites don't care how much power blacks have as long as they don't get too close."
"I hope you're a student because your spelling and punctuation need work"
Hey granny better call the guy who invented this thing, the intern net bvecause there aint no rules.
As for the "psychologically traumatized by being attacked..." maybe your kids go to shrinks we in da hood go to the school of hard knocks about the face and head.
Diversity is a code word for different races putting up with each other. My daughters kindegarten class had 9 ESL students. They came from all over the world. THis years census data will reflect that. The world isn't white or black or brown. I'd like to live to see a time when we don't use color as an adjective like we were all from a box of crayons. ANd some crayons are prettier than others.
Teenagers fight. Why can't we just leave it that.
I've been in Montclair for over 30 years now, and while it might seem to be a "race" issue to some, the answer is more likely to be a class one. I'll bet that these kids (and most of those who cause these issues around town) live on or below the poverty line. While the fair-haired wealthy of our town do their fair share of nonsensical behavior, it is primarily the poor kids who get themselves into these situations. Blame it on society, blame it on their parents, but at the end of the day income level has more to do with these issues than most people think.
There are plenty of affluent blacks in this town, they don't like a fight like that anymore than anyone else. And not every struggling family in this town are made up of "people of color" I know plenty of white single moms here who are barely making it. Their kids have their issues too.
According to the MHS student directory, none of the people charged actually attend MHS.
former students. mhs pride
hell yea OG ur my dude MHS 07 Y07L holdin' it dowwwn
hahaha you prob are my dude at the high, we just dont know it

fuck one of those mugs he robbed me frosh year haha

one of them robbed me frosh year
Are there always this many kids posting on here?
always, theyre so annoying
Actually, it's hard to tell the kids from the adults.
JD, how could you make such an assumption that the kids involved are poverty-stricken? Don't be so foolish.
I don't know why those guys did what they did; they were straight up wrong. I graduated from MHS in 03 and was on the basketball team. I was the manager. I knew one of the guys. I think he has had issues before; I don't know with the law. The game did not have to end the way it did. I understand about the emotion, especially for a basketball team who didn't deserve to lose. They did well. Nice bunch of kids on the team.I'm sure those guys will do some state time.
this is a bunch of rascist BS and the whole world doesnt need to kno about it.. first off if they want to fight let them shoot the fair one as long as nobody dies or breaks anyhting.. they wanna talk and start instigating at the highschooll.. so be it .. but certain actions have certain consequences

umm the problem with thugs is they fight dirty. They come in gangs and use weapons. Cannot justify poor behavior, sorry!
The fight should not have happended. Race does not have anything to do with sporting event fights. It is just stupid and uncalled for.
Did anyone notice the poor sportsmanship showed by the Montclair High School basketball team. It does not matter, if the team wins or loses, they seldomly display good sportsmanship. The coach, Major Jennings is the reason for this lack of respect his team has for sportsmanship.
The team is out of control when they play, disrespectful to the other team, and they go to away games looking like thugs.
Montclair should have won Group VI Section 1 title without a problem. Year in and year out we keep losing, even though we have the more talented players. We were the number one seed and loss in the first round.
This guy has been using out of district players for years and nothing is done. His team GPA is very low, but players are allowed to play. The players on his team seldomly qualify for scholarships. He does not help his players get into school. He does not teach them how to play the game at a high level. The man is letting the kids play without any direction and that is why we can't win the counties or the section. If this was a sport coached by a white person and played by white players he would have been removed long ago. He would not have been hired in the first place.
Everyone in town is afraid of his wife. Truth be told he should have beeen fired a long time ago. The Bd. of Ed. is afraid she will bring the NAACP down on them, if they fire him. For fourteen years our kids have had to endure his complete incompetence.
We have produced some of the best players around this area, but can't win big games, because the team is not prepared. Major needs to check his ego and either quit or go to clinics and brainstrom with quilified basketball coaches like Bob Hurley, Bob Ferrell, or Pat Brunner.
Montclair basketball deserves a real basketball coach. It hurt to watch him call a time out and not tell his players anything. They are not paying attention anyway. Why? He does not teach them to pay attention or respect him as their coach.
He needed to set up a play with ten seconds to go against West Orange, to win the game. A timeout is called and he starts pointing at spots on the floor. A real coach would have diagrammed the play out on a play board. Not Major! We ended up taking a rushed three point shot, in a game we were only losing by one.
Steve Tober and Major keeping talking about the better players not attending M.H.S., Major is the reason why.
Monty sports,
Now, I disagree with your statement. Maj has calmed down over the past few years. When I was on the team, there were some people who were obnoxious, and their grades weren't high at all. This year, I'm sure, at times, players show poor sportsmanship because they have a lot of stuff on their mind. They don't direct it at anyone. The reason why Maj got pissed off easily was because of the obnoxious players. Yes, he did take it out on others, which was wrong. I still respect him.
WOW. So who is Mrs Jennings and why should we be afraid of her for the incompetance of her husband?
I personally think HS sports is a large part of being in a High School. If kids are afraid to go to games because of a "few bad apples", who happen to tote guns, then the system gets a name and the home values do plummet.
The American Dream is single home ownership and there are MANY other towns that offer a safe HS experience and packing guns is not a part of it.
Forget about Police being a part of every game. Good sportsmanship, obviously lacking here, does not involve Police.
The other point you bring up about out of district kids makes crazy. WHY are they not paying a tuition?
My hard earned $30,000 tax bill is glaring at me.
Here is the article in the Star Ledger I referred to yesterday that surmises the "racial fault line" in Essex County, and the process known as "tipping".
http://www.nj.com/specialprojects/index.ssf?/specialprojects/immigrants/1228_westorange.html
Yes, there are times when the sportsmanship is in the red.
Is Major Jennings related to the uninspiring dud principal at Mount Hebron, "Dr." Jennings? (For those who don't recall, he's the one who singled out high achievers by race at an honors assembly in a ham-handed attempt to be inspirational)
Twenty-four hours before the basketball game/melee, students, parents and Montclair residents of all colors filled the high school auditorium for the Black History Month assembly. No arguments, no fights, no problems. Just wonderful music, inspiring words and recognition of those who help make Montclair a nice (most of the time) place to live.
The racial fault line and tipping story referenced above
organized sports are for idiots.
No, Maj doesn't have any relation to Dr. Jennings.
the fight had little to do with the game that happened simply because these kids are kids still they live and die with the moment at hand and being kids they talk and walk tith thier chests out and being a "neighborhood game " just raised the tensions back and forth .

So now someone claims it was basically the coach's fault. Ah well, it has to be someone's fault. Can't just be the hormones kicking in like usual.
But sleepysleek, I'm surprised at your verbal slip above, you've insulted probably a division-sized grouping of local soccer moms and dads (and basketball parents and football boosters and...)
"Major" as in, say, Major Lance, by the bye? Walking through the park, it wasn't quite dark.......
Dan, buried in your own article about West Orange is the phrase "Montclair's white enrollment has actually increased" since 1999-2000. You can't have it both ways.
Dr. Jennings and Major are first cousins.
Dr. Jennings and Major are first cousins.
Dr. Jennings and Major are first cousins.
now in a program littered with bad sportmanship and coaches ; ie football also, theres no way to say major is the worst ive attended both basketball and football practices over the years and they're both comic reviews but that translates well into their respective games and how they react in crunch time. As far as results from football i being a town figure have regulary called their plays from the bleachers and had coaches more concerned with me than what is actually going on in the games. As far as these kids showing good sportsmanship well thats only taught and the key word enforced in town league football . Basketball should have several sectional titles but then again so should football As for both sports i personally feel like there is time for a change, both produce wins but neither transforms young men into major college bound athletes
Dr. Jennings and Major Jennings are first cousins.
Are you wondering how he was placed in his cousins school? NEPOTISM!
everybody is telling me don't fuck with Montclair again. You know what we went into their gym and defeated them. We dominated the boards and out muscled them the entire game. when jerry inbounded the ball right in front of our bench, one of the players from Montclair said, "yo they bitchin" West Orange then proceeded to finish the game on a 9-2 run. If Montclair did not want us charging their court they should have defended their home court like a good number 1 seed team should do which would have negated us from running out on the court. Thats the price you pay for losing. Hey we just lost to PCT in the semis and it felt like shit, but we took on the chin like men. The fact that they're was so much talk about this game the day before made the win more gratifying for us, that is why we were boasting after the game. By the way ill go back to Montclair any day of the week, i don't like when one of my boys gets hit with a bottle. handle your shit with your hands, instead he acted like a damn fool. West Orange won, Montclair lost CASE CLOSED.
dan, many of the changes in montclair (particularly regarding affordability) have taken place since 2002, so citing the u.s. census is rather deceptive. i don't know how long you've lived in town, but long-timers know what i'm talking about--it's a more recent, rather than long-term trend.

ok stop looking at the percents and start looking at the actual numbers. there's 1,305 less Whites, 665 more Blacks, 741 more Asians, and 1,187 more Hispanics. I think that over a thousand people leaving is significant but still what about the people who are half and half? Half White half Black, half white half Asian, etc. I'm English, German, Filipino, and Italian. Where do I fit in in your little graph?
There really are no racism problems in MHS so stop trying to make something out of nothing. We're all cool as long as no one messes with us.
