Nobody Goes There Anymore; It's Too Crowded

Monday, March 12, 2007

The State Street Grill's Sunday morning brunch scene is getting to remind us of the stateroom scene from "A Night at the Opera." Between the church-goers and the regular Sunday morning slackers, the line at midday yesterday was so long we were beginning to think they were going to need a bouncer.

What was hopping in your corner of Baristaville last weekend?

My kitchen. Two toddlers digging into blueberry pancakes with maple syrup and lots of fruit. Lots of fresh coffee (Whole Foods extra-dark French roast) for me to take the edge off of daylight savings time.

State Street Grill is just awful though I guess nothing can stop the God Squad.

My computer...LOTS of very interesting emails flying back and forth!

We made it to State Street Grill before the 11:00 am church services let out. Thank goodness we were seated before tons of people came in. We leave Montclair to avoid the overcrowding at the restaurants here. There is no escaping foodies!

How come there is no diner in Montclair. Raymond's is not a diner. Its a wannabe filled with you liberals ordering your veggie burgers and tofu sausage.

Spice for dinner Friday night, a birhtday celebration at The Stage House Inn in Scotch Plains on Saturday night and the WO parade, after the parade enjoyed a few irish coffee's at a friends house and ended the day at the Shellelagh Club with a few pints, a corned beef sandwich and a listen to Paddy & the Pale Boys. A good weekend!

Where are the best brunches in Montclair? I normally go to Raymonds, but I could use a change, and the crowd there is overwhelming. Montclair Charbroil is a good diner "no diner in montclair". I still call it Louvis', but i guess it hasn't been that in 15 years or so.

There is also a diner on Montclair State campus. Its called the Red Hawk Diner I think and almost never crowded. its a traditional diner with booths and a counter

no diner in montclair, why do you care if other people want to eat "veggie burgers and tofu sausage?" Why are conservatives so full of anxiety and hate about anything new to them? Which is anything their ignorant parents didn't teach them by age 10?

State Street is crowded, but the wait isn't long and the food is solid, considering. We couldn't find parking in Montclair at all yesterday and had to eat somewhere.

I'm a fan of brunch at Just Jakes. It's even got live music, and they're surprisingly kid-friendly. The location is in the back, behind the bar area.

The usual fine sushi/sashimi at Aki Friday night -- try the spicy tuna Tartare. Couple-a-three dogs at Amazin's Saturday noon. Costco hunting-gathering foray Saturday afternoon -- red meat galore! Red wine to boot! Alka-Seltzer today, oy...

My greasy spoon (Calico Kitchen in Totowa) went out of business a few months ago, and I haven't found a decent diner to replace it.

Anybody know any diner that makes Creole style French Toast, madew with the thick bread?

How about the 6 Brothers Diner on 46? Give you pretty large portions and open 24/7.

Is it a restaurant that's going into the "Pup & Suds" space in Watchung Plaza? I'm curious if anyone knows.

The red hawk diner is dreadful - food is inedible - yuck

We have eaten at the State Street Grill and found it wanting.

Our place of choice after services on Sunday is Jefferson's on Elm at the end of Woodland.

It is a "Why wait for middle age, have your heart attack now." kind of place, but the breakfasts are beyond delicious.

We agree with Hiding. Red Hawk Diner is just awful.

State Street is not good; yesterday I was in Bloomfield and went to the bagel shop on Bloomfield and Liberty (sort of) and had a good omlette, bagel and coffee at a low price.

And I avoided the State Street crowds and weak Starbucks blend.

WAFFLE HOUSE!! My new favorite eating establishment. Reminds me of the old SHORT-STOP but, with more seating.

What about Montclair Charbroil on Valley Road? I waitressed there in college, about 15 years ago. It was owned by a rude family. Do they have the same owners now? Haven't gone back since then due to traumatic work exeperience.

The State Street Grill is awful. For Sunday afternoons, I like the IHOP on Broad St. Once the after church crowds have cleared out.
