Decamp-equitte?

Sunday, May 20, 2007

Has anybody else noticed Decamp slacking off on its cellphone ban enforcement during long commutes? Stuck on the inbound 33 on Friday night, during an exceptionally long wait to get into the Lincoln Tunnel, while we discreetly text-messaged Mista Barista about our delay, we heard a lady a few seats back chatting merrilly away on her mobile with friend after friend after friend.

As the ride topped the one-hour mark, a guy across the aisle started talking too. Finally, just about everybody, including the Barista, had picked up their cellphones and started talking.

Did the driver show mercy because he figured people had to adjust their rendezvous arrangements? Or was it just a fluke?

Deb, I'm surprised the driver wasn't on his cell as well!

PS: Petition's up to 75 signatures. Not enough to beat the comment section's online pool, but we'll take it!

Here's a question: Why do people feel the need to chat on their cellphones all the time? I can understand when there's something you NEED to tell some one - I'm running late, pick me up, my car broke down, whatever.

Now, I hear the conversations on the train and on the bus and in the grocery store, and you know what? Most of it is totally inane chit-chat. Are people afraid to be alone? Have we forgotten how to simply be where we are? Do people need to be constantly entertained?

It reminds me of a guy I used to know who always used to call people he was on the can. He expected other people to drop what they were doing and keep him entertained while he took a dump. Horrible, right? It's not so far off from what I see people doing every day.

Be alone for a few minutes, people. Even a few hours. Think some thoughts. Enjoy the quiet. Look at the trees. Interact with the people who are right next to you. You can do it. Hang up the phone.

I do not understand why it is such an issue for people to have short calls on their cell phones while on a 2 hour or so bus ride. Thats what it seems like at least. I DO NOT think people should have hour long conversations...use common sense. But be realistic...and besides no one on the bus is on the phone more often than those drivers!

I agree. Short calls don't bother me. I think we all have the patience to tolerate someone making a short and necessary call.

But it seems that some people are unable to self-regulate, and so we wind up with what I admit are somewhat draconian no-cellphone rules.

It's the difference between the spirit and the letter. It's impossible to make or enforce a rule that says "No annoying, pointless, or overlong cellphone calls." The best you can hope for, I guess, is a rule that says "No cellphones" with the implicit understanding that people won't be scolded as long as their behavior is courteous and reasonable.

So, the petition wants DeCamp to publicily acknowledge they suck, and pledge to do better? LOL. What should they do, hand out juice and Archways? What a waste of time.

As for the deep questions "Are people afraid to be alone? Have we forgotten how to simply be where we are? Do people need to be constantly entertained?" The answer is yes to all. The world is filled with subnormal idiots. Give these idiots cell phones and result is hours of mindless chit chat you're forced to listen to. The whole thought of "enjoying the quiet" is lost on people like this. And this phenomenon is only going to get worse, so invest in some noise-canceling headphones.

Someone on another thread said wouldn't it be great to showcase rude people on the train talking on their cell phones. Well this site actually exists, and has for a while now. Unfortunately I cant share it with all you fine people because I don't want to get sued by Baristanet or some other entity. Its a shame I cant provide the link because the site is hilarious. Unfortunately , just too lazy to learn the rules about posting people's likenesses on a web site. Whats the rules on this? Where's a town lawyer when you need him? Vodka lunch at The Office?

Suffice to say if you yak non-stop on your cell phone and commute on the Montclair Boonton line, there's a good chance you're probably on the site already. So please--for the sake of entertainment--keep it up!

Really, mrx5k? Such a thing exists? You most certainly can provide a link. Linking to something is totally legit. I must see this.

I figure, if someone is going to engage in a loud conversation in a public place (on the phone or otherwise) there clearly can be no expectation of privacy.

Well, what do YOU propose we do? Just sit back and accept the shoddy service as business with usual? It's nice that you are complacent enough to not care about throwing away your hard-earned dollars on a bus company that doesn't give a damn about getting you to work on time.

If you go to a restaurant and the waiter ignores you, screws up your order or serves your food cold, and then rudely slaps your check on the table, do you leave him/her a nice big fat tip?
So, why is a bus company any different.

What do I do? I boycott them permanently. DeCamp is shit - don't give them ONE MORE CENT--EVER. Take the train. Or walk. Take a rowboat across the Hudson if you have to.

No, I go over to the manager and make an ugly scene. I try to get the waiter fired and apply sufficient pressure to hopefully get a comped meal without causing such a bad stink that the cops show up.

I cant do that with DeCamp. I cant complain to the manager of DeCamp because I dont think anyone even manages DeCamp; it might be a chimp somewhere, throwing bananas around a fking office for all anyone can tell.
