Happy Graduation, Kiddo! Now Learn To Pack

Monday, May 7, 2007

USA Today has a story that should sound familiar to Baristanet readers. Glen Ridge residents moving to Bloomfield after the kids graduate high school.

The exodus begins this time of year. The trend showed up in Glen Ridge two years ago on the front lawn of a seven-bedroom, five-bath, slate-roof Tudor, home to three graduating high school seniors. There were two signs: "Congratulations, Brad, Blane, Brittany!" and "For Sale."

I knew that anecdote sounded familiar -- because we wrote it up here.

Other families who've made the switch...

Last year, Jennie Ciappa-Ng sold her family's house and, like the Schulmans, moved over the line to Bloomfield.

The tax savings — $22,000 on the old house vs. $6,000 on the new one — allowed her to trade an advertising job that required almost constant travel for a much less stressful one. Her son Ian recalls going off to college with a for-sale sign on the front lawn: "I was kinda upset," he says. "That was the only house I ever lived in. There were a lot of memories."

So who's moving and where? And do you want us to hype your house...

Another plan for the Schulman's is to have Andrew establish residency in CA so that he pays in-state tuition at UC-SD (tuition is $7,318 in-state, $25,485 out-of-state). The way to do this is to (1) delay admissions for 1 year (2) send junior to CA and have him get a job and apartment for 1 continuous year. That will save them $72K over 4 years.

I have a more modest house in Montclair, hopefully I'll continue to afford it after the kids go off to college...

Actually it is much easier than that. All Andrew has to do is move to Mexico, renounce his American Citizenship, cross the river illegally and the good (progressive) folk of the Golden State are more than happy to give him in-state tuition.

Should only take a few weeks!

We want to move into Glen Ridge from Bloomfield as we already have one child tuitioning into Linden Ave School. We're right on the town line & have a second child headed for tuition pretty soon.

Wanna swap? (South of Bloomfield Ave only.) If interested, email me at cedelaney@comcast.net

If only I had been born a Mexican. Just think how easy life would be.

watch that realestate commission and moving cost. it could chew up a couple of years of tax savings.

The capital gains tax on the house appreciation might also take another big bite.

Ah...we solved the problem by moving to Little Falls....property taxes cut by 2/3's and not a parking meter in sight....

I have a great house in Bloomfield for sale. It's in the Oakview section of town (the best section) on Whittle Avenue. Anyone interested, it went on the market Sunday and will be off by this Friday.

sorry, beg to differ- the section that I live in is best!

yours is too noisy eing between GSP and rt 3.

Beg all you want. Clearly you have never been back on my street, we are surrounded by Upp. Montclair golf course, there is no noise. Unless you hate the sound of birds, it's all good. If you're in the Brookdale section you have NO Yard and screaming soccer games in the park... sounds relaxing.

Can someone who lives outside of Glen Ridge pay tuition to attend the Glen Ridge public schools? If so, what are the costs/requirements/restrictions.

Thanks!

I have a yard and don't hear the screams. I think Oakview and Brookdale are the best in Bloomfield. I know families at each school and both are OK with me!

Tell you what, Spicoli, for $40k a year I'll let you use my address to establish residency.

Yes, Spicoli, our child currently tuitions into a GR school. Call the board of ed for details. There aren't always available spots & fees vary from grade to grade.
