Does the Law of Attraction Attract You?

Monday, May 21, 2007

I must be the last person in Baristaville to be let in on "The Secret."

In March, when the movie was screened at the Center for Conscious Living in West Orange, the Center's organizers tell me the crowd was so huge that people stood in the aisles. Back then, you talked about it here. But last Friday night, only a handful of viewers (including me and two neighbors I'd invited along) showed up for an encore presentation of the film. The crowd numbered less than 30, and not all of those stayed for the post-screening discussion (which turned out to be more about the Center than about the film).

Maybe the Oprah-fueled buzz for this best-seller is finally waning. Or maybe we're a skeptical bunch around here, not swayed by anything that smacks of a get-rich-quick scheme. (Or have you all just downloaded the film online already? Be honest. Is the book on your nightstand?) I'm told a "Secret" group has sprung up in Clifton, meeting monthly to discuss the members' pursuit of the Law of Attraction. I don't have details yet on when/where this group meets. But I suppose, according to the film, if I think positively and imagine that I already know the details, then one day I suddenly will know without much effort.

I'm glad I finally ticked this item off my list of pop culture tidbits to be consumed. But I've spent the weekend trying to decide what to post about it. I'm very much open to the possibility that the Law of Attraction is real. But the film was cheesier than I'd been expecting, given its popularity. Was it a slick infomercial for a preposterous self-help scheme, or an unfortunately ham-handed presentation of a potentially valuable idea? I kept wanting to buy into it, but feeling like I was being sold time-share property in North Carolina. Maybe I should have read the book instead. Any thoughts, from those of you who've seen and/or read it?

It would not surprise me that a "Secret" group sprung up in Clifton, but we will keep my reasons why such a group sprung up there a secret!

i found it intriguing, although some of the presentation of the ideas (i listened to the cd) were hamhanded indeed. but i honestly do see merit in some of the basic tenets of positive thought and self confident enthusiasm for one's goals and desires. i found that i retained the ideas that worked for me and just disregarded that parts that didn't really click with me. i especially liked the focus on gratitude for what one already has.

so what is this center for "conscious living" all about??

i've been to the website...

on what do they meditate?

why is michelle a "reverend"?

what do they mean by (in what do they have) "faith"?

why do people become "members"?

what do they "celebrate" on Sundays?

what are "prayer practitioners"?

what is the meaning is, of
"$20 or value received."?

etc.

No matter how hard I maintain my positive outlook that there will not be any traffic on the Southbound GSP, there always is!

Dear Hiding,
I've been to Catholic church...

What do they pray for?

Why are they priests?

Why do people become "Parishoners"?

Why do they go to "mass"?

What are "deacons"?

They are just different terms for the same things you'd find in just about any place of worship.

Maybe instead of surfing the website, go meet some people...you'll probably find that they're just regular people. Good Luck.

NJFLBoy:

well *that* was of no help!

[i don't know why catholics do all that stuff either.

(but we weren't talking about *them*.)]

Once again, narcissism dressed up as a "self improvement".

Give me some of that old time religion.

ROC is right.

Posted by babaloo | May 22, 2007 10:20 AM

Yes, that old-time religion will solve all our problems. Let's all go to war to fight the infidels! No, ROC, I think Richard Dawkins has got it right.

Walleroo, well maybe not THAT old time...

As to Richard Dawkins,

I'll see your crusades and raise you:

a Castro,
a Mao,
a Pol Pot,
a Hitler,
and
a Stalin.

(secular "humanists" all)

The same fate awaits mankind without God as awaits children without parents.

Holy Jihad, Batman, we're all going to hell in a handbasket.

One does not have to believe in a religion to be a good, morally upstanding person.

Belief in a religion does not mean a person will be a good, morally upstanding person.

Neither does one need a parent to grow up well adjusted, but it sure makes it easier.

Posted by ROC | May 22, 2007 2:37 PM

What if one's parents are atheists?

Posted by Miss Martta | May 22, 2007 4:06 PM

or worse {cue dramatic music} agnostic?

no matter, either way it's a false comparison

My Scientologist friends tell me that these Secret people are a bunch of charlatans.

Walleroo, even through your daily prose efforts here are almost unerringly dreary, I expect more than a citation of Richard Dawkins by way of making the case for disbelief. What, you couldn't bother to also mention the guy who wrote "Letter To A Christian Nation?" Or Christopher Hitchens?

The problem with all this plumping for atheism of late is that it says nothing new that wasn't said hundreds of years ago, and better then. Whereas, even somewhat to my own surprise, it remains possible today to still say new and interesting things about the "goodness" inherent in belief.

For a truly curveball version of this, let me recommend to you a book that came out something like 12 years ago, called "The Physics Of Immortality." Author Frank T(r?)ipler used to work for NASA and is the real academic deal, but his book posits that it's mathematically possible to prove that the resurrection of the dead will in fact occur in the last days. Even as I basically didn't understand a word of his argument (which is replete with formulae and equations), I was pleased that be brought something new to the debate on belief. Unlike the voguish Dawkins and others.

Posted by cathar | May 23, 2007 10:17 AM

Atheism is a statement of faith not science.

Cathar, I wouldn't put much stock in a quantum-mechanial eventuality ("proof"). In quantum mechanics anything is possible with less than infinite probability against. So theoretically resurrection has a finite mathematical probability. As does a monkey typing King Lear on a typewriter, as does the possibility you will vote for Hillary.

(as does the chance Mikey will have a career in Criminal Justice)
