Glen Ridgers who remembered Mayor Carl Bergmanson's decision last December not to conduct civil unions might have been surprised, like we were, when the borough-produced Glen Ridge Town Talk arrived in the mail this week with a story about how to get a civil union in Glen Ridge. Several civil union ceremonies have already been performed, according to the article, which compared the process to "marriage without the rice."
Those wishing to enter into a Civil Union must be the same sex, at least 18 years of age, and not party to another civil union, domestic partnership, or marriage....the application fee is $28.... an additional fee of $100 is charged to those who choose to have the ceremony finalized by the mayor in the courtroom.
The story was clearly a surprise to Bergmanson, who says he still doesn't conduct civil unions, but will marry gay and lesbian couples.
I'm not sure who wrote that little tidbit, but they did not consult with me on the wording. I do not perform Civil Union ceremonies. I perform Marriage Ceremonies for couples regardless of gender. If someone wanted a CU ceremony, they would be referred to other mayors or members of the clergy.
Civil unions became legal in NJ on Feb.19, but same-sex marriage is only legal in the state of Massachussetts.
Hey, maybe Mountainside Hospital is actually in Boston.

"Those wishing to enter into a Civil Union must be the same sex..."
(I assume they mean the same 'gender.')
But isnt' that discrimination?!
