Lager Run Comes To Glen Ridge

Saturday, June 23, 2007

Do you like crave a cold one after a long run on a hot day?

Last year's successful Lager Run has moved from Montclair to the streets of Glen Ridge. This year's race, on Sunday, June 24, begins at 5:30 pm. Proceeds benefit the Glen Ridge Community Fund. Click here for the enrollment form.

The adult after-party, on Herman Street, is sponsored by the new owner of Fitzgerald's, the restaurant-formerly-know-as-Joseph's. Fitzgerald's is providing free food and two beers (adults only, of course) to runners after the race. Herman Street will be closed to traffic. Kids can get free sodas, food, and move over to Hurrell field for games and entertainment.

Fundraiser notwithstanding, we heard from one Herman Street resident who doesn't want beer on her block.

She writes:

This morning [Tuesday, June 19], the residents of Herman St found in their mailboxes an unsigned letter on GR Community Fund letterhead advising them that Herman Street will be the scene of a Block Party where beer will be given away to anyone over 21...Blocking the street for the race is fine. But 4 hours of Beerfest in my front yard, is just too much to presume!!!

"This is not an out-of-control beer party," says run organizer Dan Murphy.

There will be a police presence, and controls are in place to make sure no alcohol is served to minors.

"This is a fun, community event raising money for a good cause," Murphy added. He expects between 400 and 500 participants.

I will be one of those "between 400 and 500" participants.

How about a wine run? But I do that almost every day to Bottle King--hopefully, someday they will deliver. I am not strong enough to lift a case!

Too bad it's not an "out-of-control beer party." Such always prove much more fun than a running event (with apologies to Miss Martta).

I mean, just two per person? That's usually the ante.

Ach, Cathar...come on down and have a couple why dontcha. I think the true test of one's mettle is whether or not he or she can run the 5K AFTER they've had a few! :-)

i'd like to know more about this Fitzgerald's. I hadnt heard that Joseph's was changing hands. When will this happen and what kind of place is it going to be?

My metric system is a bit rusty, how long is 5k meters?

I'm thinking about doing this, but the last time I was in a racewas in January 2006 and I was in a bear costume and pulling a shopping cart... and the drinking was done before, during, and after the race.

"...I was in a bear costume and pulling a shopping cart...

Jeez, Mike -- don't try that around here, especially near Irvington. They shoot bears in Essex County and ask questions later, shopping cart or not!

5K=3.1 miles

You might also get shot if you try stealing someone's shopping cart. Trust me on this.

You shop at Lackawana Plaza, too?

I used to, before I moved to Verona. Had a problem with having to pay to use a shopping cart, though, so I began shopping at the A & instead.
