Mapping Crime in Baristaville

Monday, July 9, 2007

You asked for it. Here it is...

Baristaville's very own Montclair crime map detailing when and where crimes have occurred and links to stories reported on the crimes. The map lives on the site; click on the "local maps" tab. Readers can contribute, too.

Hmm ... seems pretty easy to contribute bogus crimes to this map ... shouldn't a trusted person be managing this feature?

"Crime of the heart committed at Just Jakes on Saturday, July 7, 12:45 am. Offender issued bogus phone number."

It seems like the locations are faulty. For example, there's a crime marked as "on Park Street, no address given." However, when you trace the story back through your own links to the Montclair Times story, it gives a cross street in Upper Montclair, not south of James Street, as is plotted on your map.

Another example: the recent murder-suicide on Claremont. This happened in a home between Valley and North Mountain, and it was plotted between Park and Midland.

At first, I was alarmed to see all the crimes happening near my house...but a few clicks showed this to be inaccurate.

I'm not sure if any others are wrong--I gave up! What's the point of a map where the locations are off?

OK lets get serious about this...I am in nyc every day...the message is...see something say something. How many people in Montclair have the Montcair Police or 911 as a speed dial on their cell phone? Just this morning there was a suspicious car on Christopher Street going slow checking houses as he went down the street. Did not feel right with me. I called the Police. They thanked me and said they would check it out. Obviously if two thugs jump out of the bushes and hold a gun to your face there is not much you can do, but you could at least keep your eyes and ears open. This is the world we live in...so act accordingly.

If this map really represents Baristaville, then Montclair is in terrible shape compared to GR & Bloomfield. I count only 3 incidents in these two crime-free communities.

There are MANY crimes missing from Bloomfield on this map. For example: weren't there two kids shot (one killed) on Glenwood Ave earlier this Spring? Nothing on the map would suggest this crime ever took place.

I like mine better ;-)

If anyone has any feature they'd like me to add or modify, let me know. Thanks!

Oops...almost forgot:
I have a free alert list for lost and found pets in the Montclair area too: if you know any rescuers, let them know:

Thanks!

"Just this morning there was a suspicious car on Christopher Street going slow checking houses as he went down the street."

I saw the same car on my street, he was throwing yellow bags onto people's lawns. I didn't call the cops though.

I call the Montclair police department all the time...I don't care if I'm over reacting and they always assure me I'm not, I'd rather be safe than sorry, and ah' hello isn't that what we are paying them for???

Thanks so much for all your suggestions. If you'd like to help us edit the intersections you can send me an email at katie@baristanet.com with the correct intersection and your source (as one person mentioned, the Montclair Times). The crimes on this map date back to the last 2 months (and only crimes mentioned on Baristanet), if you'd like to add a crime that took place before, go right ahead, just make sure your information is correct and leave a link to the source so that we can approve it. The crime entries are moderated, for the person who mentioned bogus crimes showing up. Thanks again!

does the highway robbery of Montclairians paying property taxes count?

it sure should- it has been covered in baristanet and has occurred at 205 Claremont.

Please map it for us katie.

"Just this morning there was a suspicious car on Christopher Street going slow checking houses as he went down the street."

Perfectly ordinary behavior from someone talking on a cell phone while driving.

On second thought, that's illegal too. Good call!

What is the purpose of this map? Are we supposed to refer to it when we stand at a high crime area? This further breeds fear and contributes to our fear-based culture.

I am constantly aware in Montclair. Strange, I was walking around Journal Square area in Jersey City yesterday and felt safer there.
