Peanut Butter Fudge Brownie, the flavor the baristas fell in love with at Applegate Farm, took the prize last weekend in Toms River's annual Ice Cream Fest. A peanut butter cup flavor from Baskin Robbins won for national brands. Is peanut butter the new chocolate? If you like peanut butter in your ice cream, and you commute through Penn Station, stop by the Sedutto counter near Amtrak. Yum!

I used to work there in high school. I was supposed to make rocky road ice cream, but instead of using chocolate base, I used vanilla. After about 200 gallons that couldn't go to waste, we renamed it rocky snow. (i think thats what we named it. its been over a decade) Might still be on the menu today. You guys have to stop talking about preservatives and sugar in ice cream. If you're worried about the health benefits, go eat a carrot. Chances are you spend more time watching the back of labels than the shape of your body anyway

Love peanut butter sauce on my vanilla ice cream.

I think the best ice cream out there is HaggenDass' Belgian Chocolate... there is tons of tiny pieces of dark chocolate in chocalte ice cream.

I LOVE Peanut Butter Fudge Brownie from Applegate and I really really loved the "Elvis" parfait at the Soda Pop Shop, which also had PB in it.

Seriously, though, stop posting the ice cream ingredients. I don't think most people are worrying about the make-up of ice cream. Either they don't care that it's not good for you (and it shows) or they already know it's not good for you and indulge sparingly... or they're the mayor of Bloomfield and don't like ice cream.

Here are some other things that contain Corn Syrup that you might want to protest:

Capri-Sun,Hanson's Tonic Water,Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice,Starbucks' Frappuccino,Pepperidge Farm's line of 100% whole grain breads,Heinz Ketchup,Robitussin Infant Cough DM,Nabisco Wheat Thins - Low Sodium,Claussen Pickles,Campbells Vegatable soup

Unless you want to prepare your own food, you have to put up with unnatural ingredients. But dont worry... you can churn your own ice cream at home

I took this picture yesterday, and the ice cream was delicious!
I love peanut butter in ice cream, but for a low-cal treat this time of year, Edy's Slow-Churned Vanilla Frozen Yogurt with fresh NJ blueberries.

Does anyone remember the old fake talk show, "Fernwood Tonight?" (It was a "Mary Hartman" spinoff.) Martin Mull's character would actually try to make products by mixing carageenan, lecithin, corn syrup, wheat flour, etc. The finished pproduct never looked remotely like the real, packaged thing, and the guests' reactions always indicated it didn't taste like it, either.

So yes, give the ice cream recipes a rest. It's not easy to blend all those ingredients, however artificial they are, into something tasty and nice ti look at.

Does an ice cream without all those fillers and nasties exist? If so, I would like to know. I usually indulge in Ben & Jerry's lowfat yogurt sparingly and that brand seems to have the least amount of junk in it (although it's not 100% junk-free). but if you know of one that is, please share!

Posted by Miss Martta | July 26, 2007 3:23 PM

Depends on how you define "junk", Ms. M. I define it as "corn syrup" (what part of the corn plant do you tap to get the syrup out?) and all those preservatives, artificial flavors and artificial colors.

Turkey Hill has a limited line of all-natural ice cream that contain just cream, sugar, milk, and natural flavors. I like the chocolate myself.

MM,

I don't know for certain, but I'd imagine either Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would have to have something that is junk free.

You may want to bring a scarf and gloves, though. I imaging you'd be spending a lot of time digging through those freezer sections.

Turkey Hill Natural Recipe Chocolate

Ingredients: CREAM, SUGAR, NONFAT MILK, COCOA

While this ice cream is great, it feels a little "thin" in the mouth. Guar gum (a poly-saccharide) and carrageenan (a seaweed derivative) are thickeners and fat substitutes that that give the mouthfeel.

Ack...think I'll just buy an ice cream maker and make my own!

Only because I post anonymously will I admit that even the thought of eating peanut butter fudge brownie ice cream transports me to a happier time in the distant past, beyond memory, and makes me wish that I could just let it all go about become one of those morbidly fat people for whom a big bowl full of ice cream is enough for happiness.

Thanks for the ingredients list. It helps explain why Applegate Farm ice cream has the texture of chewing gum.

And it won at the Toms River Ice Cream Festival. Forgive me for being North Jersey-centric, but that's hardly a recommendation.

Guar gum...yum! NOT!

Posted by Miss Martta | July 27, 2007 9:04 AM

Guar gum, although scary sounding, is one of the healthiest ingredients in the list.

Guar gum is extracted from the guar bean, where it acts as a food and water store. The guar bean is principally grown in India and Pakistan, with smaller crops grown in the U.S.A., Australia and Africa. The drought-resistant guar bean can be eaten as a green bean, fed to cattle, or used in green manure.

"...or used in green manure."

Sound appetizing. Like I said, I think I'll treat myself to an ice cream maker and make ice cream like grandma and grandpa had.

Posted by Miss Martta | July 27, 2007 10:42 AM

That just goes to show you how misleading a list of chemicals can be. The chemical names of most substances would sound less than appetising. After all, if somebody offered you a mixture of hydroxoethane, quinine dihydrochloride and essense of juniperus communis over frozen hydrogen dioxide with a twist of calcium hydroxide*, you'd probably refuse, even on a hot day.

*gin and tonic with a twist of lime
