MPD: Get To Know Us

Monday, August 13, 2007

Montclair residents, do you want to see and hear what's happening on the streets? Find out what the Montclair Police Department is doing to fight crime, and then give them your feedback? Then put in some time at MPD's Citizens Police Academy.

CPA is a 12-week seminar, where you'll learn about police work, crime prevention strategies, and discuss identity theft, domestic violence, and criminal law with local, county, and state law enforcement officers. Tuesdays, beginning September 18, 7-10pm, classes will be held at Essex County Police Academy in Cedar Grove. Want to attend? Be one of the first 25 to fill out an application by September 3, agree to a background check (criminals need not apply) be at least 21 years old, and you're in. By the way, the program is FREE.

Contact Lt. Ken Miscia for more info: 973-509-4740

We already have meet and greets with MPD everyday Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night at Jakes whether you be off duty or on.

Will they let us see the RAL police blotter??

Can we "get to know" the monthly traffic stop stats to check for profiling as well? I believe they are supposed to be made public on a regular basis (or maybe a lawsuit a la NYC is in order?)

There is no state mandate requiring those stats but if those stats are more important to you than crime stats then perhaps you SHOULD ask.

They arrested another man with a gun in his car on Monday morning. One on Thursday morning also. That makes three in 4 weeks. Maybe pulling over cars is just the answer to fighting the crime that has escalated in Montclair.

Well, in that case, why not pull over everybody to make sure that we get all the guns, gun dealers, child predators, illegal immigrants, weed and other drug sellers and buyers, skateboards, parking violators,
and assorted other criminals and ne'er do wells. There could be roadblocks at Township borders, MHS, and at the main streets in the various neighborhoods. The standard profile can be "Driving While in Montclair" (or DWM for you hip folks!)and for our income challenged residents, a generous reward will be offered to report your neighbors comings and goings or you can receive a one-time property tax decrease!

Hey, "It is what it is". Another armed robbery at Pathmark...are you seeing a pattern here? They headed east on Blmfd. Ave. Outsiders, coming into our town, robbing people at gunpoint. I'm not saying we don't have our own crooks in town but this seems to be the M.O. Ride into town after midnight and not one cop will look your way. Midnight to 5am seems to be time to steal cars and rob people. How would you handle it if you were a cop in town? I guess not pulling over people of color is the answer? Something has to be done. Chief? What's going on??

Posted by montclairgirl | August 15, 2007 2:21 PM

ask the Chief how many police are on patrol at that time. We're luck if there are two.

Ever look at the annual police report put out by the town cheif. It lists all of the officers and patrol people.

boy is it top heavy. no one to patrol

Young African-Americans are pulled over in their cars, walking, on bikes, regularly. The streets in the Ward are heavily patrolled during that time by marked and unmarked vehicles. Of course, for the most part, these are people who live here-if you had true neighborhood policing(where the Officers walked and my tax dollars did not go for tricked out vans and Hemi Super Chargers), the police would know exactly who was who, who lived where, and the real "drug neighborhoods". How is somebody being robbed at gunpoint next door to a police substation-maybe because nobody is home cause they're riding around watching me on my porch, stopping people walking down the street from the area parking lot, and generally being nowhere near a crime scene. The Newark murders show what happens when you profile-you will only concentrate on who matches that particular profile- anybody not matching that will either get away, or investigations will be delayed (remember, they were initially looking for members of a Blood Set, and Newark is still playing down the significance of MS-13 in the Ivy Hill community, even though residents had complained about this group for a while).
