It's always this time of year when I wish I was back in Greece. The country I honeymooned 17 years ago this month (yes, I've been married that long) and part of my personal ethnic melting pot, Greece beckons to me on a regular basis, but more in October, when the weather is great and the crowds are few. This weekend, I'll go back in a way, by heading over to St. George's in Clifton, where tonight and tomorrow, my church hosts Taverna Nights. I've provided them with an ad (gratis of course), but wanted to tell you personally that if you like Greek food, wine and music, make it over to this indoor event. Souvlaki, moussaka and other classic Greek fare will be served. I'll be the one closing my eyes and pretending to be in Santorini. Kali Orexi!

Congrats, Liz! I too was married 17 years ago this October. The 13th to be exact. The way things turned out I should have known better. Ah well. Hindsight and all that. I assume things turned out much better for you.
As they say in the old country, mazel tov!
I'm not Greek Liz, but I do share you're love for the country and the food. Island hopping in Greece was a wonderful adventure and I plan to go back some day. I hope to make it to St. George's.
Greece is on my "must see" list of places. And I love the food.
Good luck with your wish list ms. Martta. I returned to native Greece for 25th recently and it is no longer the simple, unspoiled place it was 25 years ago.(But then neither am I or my spouse.) Still fun though.
congrats liz!
Dear Liz, a heartfelt congratulations, and many happy returns. I hope that on your 18th you make it out of Clifton. In the meantime, enjoy the view. (That picture is from where, exactly--Valley Road and Van Houten?
Opa! Opa! (And please feel free to break as much crockery as you wish over the bowed, obeisant, greasy and suck-uppy head of walleroo.)
I was married 8 years ago, and honeymooned in Greece and Turkey. 3 or 4 days athens, 3 on mykonos, and 3 on santorini. then 3 more in istanbul. Best vacation ever.
I stopped by the greek festival mentioned above. No good. I was expecting a quick fix of greek food with a carnival type atmosphere, but was more like a morgue. Especially with the religious service going on, that they pipe through every speaker everywhere (even outside). Maybe i went to early (6pm). Oh well.
Congtats are in order. We are on our 24th year of marriage, but have never been to Greece. My touchy stomach will not deal with Greek food, but...I learned THAT the hard way, by trying some !
All the best to you, and ...yes, Much Mazel Tov !
Sandy
We arrived at Greek Taverna about 7, people were just arriving and the church service in the adjoining chappel was also emptying out. Lots of very convivial people. Good selection of dishes. I had a very tasty Moussaka and large delicious Greek salad, lots of good goat cheese. Total cost $10 plus %4 for glass of Greek wine. I searched every female face in hope of seeing Liz George (eventhough I don't have a clear recollection what she looks like). No luck.
Thanks all for the good wishes! I'd say 6 pm is a little early, go later (Greeks eat late). I'm going tonight -- sorry I missed Spectator (have you ever been to Cyprus...)
Congrats, Liz: One of my high school buddies has just retired and built a house on Paros. We plan to visit sometime in the next couple of years.

Life is Good!
Ah, the Greek letters didn't translate. Not enough tech knowledge to post a literal character string, but you get the point: LIfe is still good!
Filakia!
I was married on Santorini Island a year ago. We honeymooned in Santorini, Athens and Mykonos. Food is great in Greece - love to go back. My husband and I just watched the footage from our trip there, and your post did not come in right time - miss every bit of the country!
To all of you happily marrieds: ugh.
We tried to go Friday night around 6:30. Church service was still going on and no food was being served until sometime after that. We didn't stay since we had no idea when it was actually going to get going.
Too bad, I have many happy memories of Greece as well and we were looking forward to a raucous evening with good food.
Ker --
When they have the outdoor festival, I'll give a heads up. It's more raucous...
