Sweep :-(

Baseball's over. A-Rod's leaving. And it took a Brit to say it, but it was an incredibly dispiriting end to the season: "The Red Sox have taken the suspense out of sport, the fun out of baseball and worse the interest out of the World Series."

Here's your open thread for bragging, crying or gnashing of teeth. Or blame it all on Rudy.

I was rooting for the Sox myself, so I don't think it was at all "dispiriting". It could just as well have been the Indians sweeping the field with the Rockies.

If any team took the "suspense out of sport, the fun out of baseball...and the interest out of the World Series", the Yankees did it years ago. The Sox win the World Series for only the second time in what, 89 years, and they have now single-handedly spoiled the sport for the rest of us?

Please. I think that Brit should stick to cricket.

The Red Sox are an example of faith, hope and perseverence. Being a native of the Boston area, I can attest to the years of heartbreak that so many experienced. My grandfather didn't live long enough to see them win a series. Neither did my father. I'm proud and pleased to have witnessed it twice. No fun, no suspense, no spirit. I think not!

"The Red Sox have taken the suspense out of sport, the fun out of baseball and worse the interest out of the World Series."

You're kidding right???!!! The Yankees did that a decade ago . . .

In the four years that Alex Rodriguez's paychecks came from the the Yankees, the Red Sox won two World Series.

You sign him now, John Henry!

Yankee sour grapes won't cut it this year. The Sox played a superlative game and they deserved to win. The Yanks, by comparison, looked mismatched, out of sync, and under resourced in several critical areas.

Accept it for what it is...we were outclassed and outplayed. You can hate the Sox all you want, but they did what was needed. They played well.

Hate the Sox, but hate Sox fans more.

Although I am a fan of the Red Sox, it's too bad the Rockies got swept. Their fantastic run at the end of the season (21 of out 22) now just becomes a footnote.

Posted by ElysianFields | October 29, 2007 9:19 AM

Rockies a "footnote", I think not. They had a great season and run up to the post season. Yes to bad they didn't do better against the SOX, but still a great year with a great young team that showed a lot of heart(something missing in the Yankee and Red SUX camp)

Posted by doingtimeintheburbs | October 29, 2007 9:32 AM

You are correct, the Rockies had a great year, and I'm glad the Brewers (another team I root for) had a hand in getting the Rockies into the playoffs. What most people (not us long-time baseball fans) remember about the season is the World Series champ. It will be unfortunate if all that the '07 season is remembered for is the Red Sox winning again.

Curt Schilling says it much better than I've been able to:

Taken from his blog http://38pitches.com

Hate to see the cheap shots taken by fans and writers at what went down over the last 5 days with regards to the series and Colorado’s team. They may not use it as an excuse, I certainly don’t expect to hear it from Helton, Holliday Hurdle or any others, but the 8 days between games, in my opinion, had a negative effect on them. I still believe we are the best team in the world, and 8 days or not we would have won, but I think it did impact them in many different ways. 8 days off and then you step in the box and have to face the best pitcher on the planet? Hats off to the NL Champions for redefining comeback and “against all odds”. What they did to even get to the 2007 World Series needs to be etched in stone. I think it will be lost over the next few months because of the outcome of the Series but it shouldn’t be, they did it with class and style. They played the game right and hard. Seeing true, old school, blue collar guys like Todd Helton finally getting into the World Series after putting up Hall worthy numbers his whole career is a cool thing.

Posted by ElysianFields | October 29, 2007 10:08 AM

The Sox deserve congratulations. Good pitching always wins in the postseason. Add great hitting and you get a sweep. Josh Beckett hit the next level. Mike Lowell had the season of a lifetime. He was a Yankee prospect and for me he will always be one that got away. I'd rather have him at third any day.

Certainly not one of the more exciting World Series ever. But more proof of the strength of the AL and especially the AL East.

Schilling sees Helton and mates as "blue collar guys"???? Give me a break.

"The Red Sox have taken the suspense out of sport, the fun out of baseball and worse the interest out of the World Series."

Please! As so many others have said, two wins after 86 years and it's the Red Sox that took the suspense out of the sport? I am a Yankees fan now but was brought up as a Sox fan. Even when I'm at my most pro-Yankees moments, I would admit that they have been the ones to take suspense away much more often than anyone else!

I think the Red Sox have finally overcome their curse and have the confidence to win. They were playing like the old Yankees from the late 90's. If the Yankees can remember how to play like that they'll do a lot better next year.

It's not about how much money they pay the players - the Yankees paid their players too and it didn't help. It's how you play the game. And the Red Sox played it better this year.

The Rockies will have another chance, they're young. Let the Red Sox enjoy their victory.

And maybe now it's the Cubs' turn to win a Series. Their curse is getting old...

The Sox did what they always do, even when they're losing. They play hard. If anyone took the fun out of the game it was the rockies.

It takes two to tango, and it seemed like the rockies just weren't dancing.

Go Sox.

Oh yeah, I hate the Red Sox fans.

Like yesterday, this one guy was driving throughout Montclair smoking a cigar with his hat on an blaring "Dirty Water" by The Standells.

Oh wait.....that was ME!!!

Loved them since I can blink my eyes, glad I lived long enough to see them win twice and watch the lights go out on Broadway these last few years.

Of note, the Lost Book of Nostradamus was on the History Channel last night from 9 to 11pm -- at the same time the Red Sox were winning the World Series.

Coincidence?

Art Spander, the author of that article in the Telegraph, knows as much about baseball as Joe Buck and Tim McCarver know about Cricket. Actually, he may know as much baseball as Joe Buck and Tim McCarver do, considering the inane, inaccurate, irrelevant, and thoroughly irritating excuse for broadcasting that the Fox Network forced those of us without ESPN radio to endure. It was made clear when Fox bought the rights for MLB that it was simply to be used as a platform to hype their low-rated, low-brow, underachieving line up of trash. Too bad they had to ruin what should be a classic sporting event in the process. I suggest they immediately recruit Mr. Spander, because they have the World Series for the next six years, and a couple of Super Bowls thrown in, too.

Nothing against A-Rod, but I surely would like to see his agent hung out to dry this time. Boras, whose clientele roster reads like the "Fortune 100 Top Sports Gekkos List," probably costs us each $2 a ticket when we go to a game. If the Red Sox lose Mike Lowell -- something that shouldn't happen, but ask Carlton Fisk or Roger Clemens -- they might very well consider A-Rod, as they did once before. If the Sox do decide to go after him, I think I will start following South Asian Badminton, or some such -- the greed factor has just about ruined every other sport available on television (talk about causal relationships).

Oh, well, today I am proudly wearing a pair of scarlet red socks for only the second time in this century, and never in the past one. As much as the media and all want to talk about the Yankees' new manager and the A-Rod soap opera, the Red Sox have built a team that has proved to be a winner. Nothing against the Rockies, but they had four chances to win at least one game and extend the series, and they failed at all of them. Can't blame bad luck.

Who knew - Red Sox Nation has a good presence in Baristaville. Color me happy guy to be among so many of my people.

I chose Tessie by the Dropkick Murphys and alas no cigar.

I guess it's true, what they say, that Jesus really is a Redsox fan.

Ackme, Guido, MrC, and all y'other members of Red Sox Nation: are you familiar with the BLOHARDS (the Benevolent Loyal Order of the Honorable Ancient Redsox Diehard Sufferers of New York)? They are an outpost of RSN in NYC. You can find them at www.blohards.com. They are a little off-key right now because their founder and long-time leader passed away not too long ago, but the site is still worthwhile and it should give you a giggle or two.

Another lifelong Red Sox fan here. Took years of abuse from Yanks fans at work, esp in 2003...oh how funny to beat up on the Sox fan. Everybody got in on the game.

Then, 2004, after Game 7, I softly say "Go Sox" with a grin to one of the worst offenders from 03 (and from Games 1-3 in the 04 ALCS) and am accused, loudly, of being "so obnoxious and not at all understanding of a poor fan's feelings." This person was truly angry. Lesson learned - Red Sox fans are supposed to be happy, friendly losers and Yankees fans are not to be trifled with. Sore losers - whatevah.

We waited 86 years, my grandparents saw 1918 but not 2004. My parents thought they would not see one, let alone two, in their lifetimes. They are thrilled.

Rockies are a fabulous team; I was nervous for whoever was going to go on to play them. I expect to see and hear a lot more about them (and Cleveland) next year. They added great experience on the big stage to their talent-laden lineups and that will only serve to help.

For now, though, I am going to enjoy that my team also played with a lot of heart and this time, this time again (wow) won.
