Avoiding The Yuligans

Monday, November 26, 2007

yuligans: crazy-mad holiday shoppers who line up at stores, crowd malls and are prone to shopping rage.

If Black Friday sets the tone for holiday shopping madness, the yuligans were out in full force this weekend. Some started at midnight. In Jersey, Wal-Mart + Wii = rowdy crowds. From the Star Ledger...

At the Wal-Mart on Route 23 in Riverdale, a crowd of 300 people were huddled outside the store's doors at 5 a.m. The earliest shoppers had received tickets for the season's hot-sellers, including LCD televisions, GPS systems and Nintendo Wii games.

One man who got in line early enough to receive a ticket for one of the popular Wii games turned enterprising and began offering his ticket to shoppers for a steep $300. The police reportedly arrived and discouraged the man's efforts.

The Wal-Mart crowd turned rowdy when some shoppers arrived and began forming a new line, hours after the initial shoppers had started their vigil in the frosty early morning temperatures. "Get to the back of the line. Get to the back of the line,'' some shoppers began chanting.

Meanwhile, if you're feeling distracted and having trouble staying focused at work -- here's your excuse. It's Cyber Monday!

So who knows the best place to buy a Wii online?

You can go to wiitracker.com to find a wii online. At this moment, Walmart.com has some in stock. And when you buy online, you don't have to push a 6 year old down to grab the last one on the shelf.

I found Wi to be such a disappointment graphics wise. Not sure what all the hype is about.

Goldfinger PS2...now that's a good game.

People are pathetic.
I bought a coffee and a New York Times on Black Friday.

Robin,

The hype is the myth that it will get fat kids up and moving about while they play their games. Simulating the steps leading up to the release of a bowling ball, moving back and forth as they play tenis, etc.

What I've found with most games on Wii that aren't the free ones that come with the system is that they very rarely require the user to exert themselves any more than pointing the remote end of the controller at the TV screen to "shoot" an arrow or whatever.

The other appeal is the price. A lot of people (especially parents) are willing to sacrifice some graphics quality to save $100 (xbox 360 "Premium" is $350) - $250 (PS3 80g edition is something like $500).

Thanks GNM,

I am glad I got to spend my childhood outdoors playing kick the can and hide and seek, riding my bike and catching crayfish and salamanders in the stream in the woods. Kids today are glued to those tv games. sad.

I don't know, I think the Wii is fun in a simple kind of way--it has broad appeal and anybody can play (it's big in some retirement homes). I'm actually not a big fan of xbox, etc. because it just seems like it can suck you in and before you know it, you've been in a dark room for hours and you start to twitch nervously when you have to have a real conversation with another living being. Of course, moderation is the key here as it is in so many things...like posting on baristanet.

Drob: "People are pathetic"

You just noticed this? But really, your NYTimes and coffee is what, worldly? Do you nod in agreement as you read? Don't you find Herbert pedantic? I check timeswatch.org everyday for laughs.

As for the wii, I love it as does everyone else who tries it (I want to get Mario Galaxy). Call me old, but while I enjoy my psp, it has too many buttons...

Now give me arcade Astroids, Track and Field (with buttons not trackball) or Space Invaders, some quarters and I'll be set..... (add in "Stripes and Spares" pinball and I'll have no time to post.)

Bah Humbug you bitches! Well, it started with Balck Friday, then next week we start Hanukkah (Jews got to go first), then it all goes to hell (for those of us who are Christian).
I look forward to the crazy asses in the parking lots--that has already started here in friendly Montclair. So people, if you see me coming down the lane with the beehive hair doo, get the you know what out of my way because I will swipe you with my SUV, then wipe the street up with your ugly face! Hahahahahahaha
