You're right JP, wonder if her ears are pointed?

She is not only the best hip-hop teacher, but a fantastic singer. I guarantee this concert will be sold out!

Unfortunately, hip hop is just another excuse for entertainment that will take its historical place with disco. The unfortunate part is the wasted years for some very talented people, along with the idiots who share their love while driving around, thinking we all need to experience their choice while we are occupied with ours.

aw come on. you didn't dance when Donna Summer was hot and you don't dance now.

Ambi,

You're kidding, right? Hip hop as disco? That may play in your world but anyone who knows anything about contemporary American culture will disagree. Like it or not (and maybe you didn't know this) hip hop is THE driving force in our culture here and, some would argue, around the world. Look at fashion, movies, commercials and, oh yea, the music charts. It's a hip hop world. And don't forget while disco had a hot 10 years or so, folks-- black and white -- in their 40's-50's who are runnin' things now, consider themselves part of the hip hop generation which began in the late 70's.

So if you hear the first beat of "The Breaks" or (for me) "Don't believe the Hype" and your head bobs-- that's you. If not, I got nuthin' fo ya.

My nephew has a iPod filled with Hip-hop, mostly undergound, but some mainsteam. That's all we listen to when we go camping together each summer. I liked it very much and came to appreciate the social relevance, the grooves/beats and some world class lyrics.

He keeps promising to send me some CD's. I'm gonna have to get on his case to send me some, which I promise to listen to only at moderate volume on my iPod.

Indeed, hip hop has been around almost ten times as long as the fleeting trend of disco.

Popular does not equate with good. It's dispoasble culture.

Hip hop has nothing to do with music. It's all about commercialism and selling out to the highest bidder to buy more bling, Escalades and other fleeting items.

Hip hop may have been around a long time and a "driving force" but I defy anyone to name a song from more than 6 months ago.

Then again, I'm a crotchety old man who was happy the Eagles outsold Britney by a 2-1 margin, what do I know?

I'm with you Steve!

Steve, you are describing 'Gangsta Rap'. Not the same thing as 'hip-hop'.

I'm loving my Chubb Rock right now from the Yo MTV Raps days.

I would also recommend ICE-T - Power, Boogie Down Productions (BDP) - By All Means Necessary (although I do not agree with KRS-One's comments on 9/11)and Ed OG and Da Bulldogs - Life of a Kid in the Ghetto.

Those are some high maintenance brows there.

I'm down with Bone Thugs n Harmony and Naughty by Nature. Immortal Technique just blazes away too.

For the record, despite the backlash and record burnings, disco wasn't just a meaningless fad either. Consider the fact that the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever sold more copies than Abbey Road or Sgt. Pepper. And the roots of disco can still be heard in music that is popular now like Gwen Stefani, Chris Brown and Kanye West.

More importantly, Angel (the actual topic of this post) is great, so I hope that people go out to see her.

Most rock music takes its roots from country. Everything in the universe is interconnected.

Rarely does the discussion stick to the post.

HAHAHAHAHA

Talk about sounding old. Steve, Jeez. Disposable? C'mon bro, you can do better than fighting this losing battle. This argument is over and Rap won.

I imagine you're still waiting for this "Rock n' Roll" thing to meet its end. (And don't start with bashing American Idol since Carry Underwood just killed at the CMA....).

Ah, no. But keep up the good fight. (And remember, rap and its rhythm it IS THE dominant sound today.) See below from 2003....

Rap Rules Grammy's (again)

I was only half kidding (and I thought it might get a rise). I am aware of how long hip-hop has been around; its roots go back to disco (which I did go to, but listened to rock and funk like George Clinton and Bootsy). I also know what a world wide business it is (i.e.: the Japanese don't get the ghetto hardship culture only the music as music) and its influence on other genres. The fact that it does incorporate so much variety as it was and still is influenced by locale, means there's lots decent music and a lot of talented people. There is also a lot of lousy hip-hop (usually played a high volume from expensive car systems, talk about wanting a zapper) that incorporates not the unfairness to the downtrodden in a way that is uplifting, but violence and retribution, which I would love to see go away. The problem, as I see it, is the blanket like or dislike of hip-hop that inhibits weeding out the bad.
ackme, Rock has its roots in the Blues, Gospel and country. Now also hip-hop.
