Bloomfield Candidates Talkin'

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Democratic incumbent Mayor Raymond McCarthy won his third term as mayor of Bloomfield, snagging 56% of the votes to Republican John Lazar Jr.'s 44%. From The Star Ledger:

"This is great for the town of Bloomfield," McCarthy said. "We've been able to run a campaign that was straight-forward and based on the facts and go past the lies that were thrown at us."

And after the results were in, Lazar said he's done.

Lazar said this will be his last election.

"There is no hope for the town, it's the same old, the same thing (the Democrats) have been doing for the past six years," Lazar said. "This town isn't an issue-oriented town anymore. It's a party-oriented town."

Agree or disagree? Talk about it now...

Dear John,

We saw what you envisioned for us and rejected it. This is not a "Party town" this is a town of concerned citizens.

Citizens who are concerned about the way we live. Citizens who do not feel that giving developers everything that they want- whether it violates town rules or not, is NOT the way to go.

We saw what you gave the developer of the project next to the school on Broad and West Passaic. We saw how you refused to let the citizens speak and how you threatened a woman who got emotional with arrest.

We saw how you would not allow OUR pictures of the dam involved in the Lionsgate project into the record- even though we were there to testify as to how, when, why, and by whom the photographs were taken.

You have sentenced the neighbors of the Lionsgate project to flooding of their homes on at least a yearly basis - when you could have had the developer fix the problem instead.

I'm glad you lost.

Don't the the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

Don't look back- we won't be coming to you for advice.

"This town isn't an issue-oriented town anymore. It's a party-oriented town."

Hmmmm....

Just maybe the issue that most concerned those who voted was the over development Mr. Lazar enabled. Another issue might have been voting for a group who pointed fingers but offered no concrete plans versus voting for a group who made their mistakes and seemingly learned from them.

We can all only hope for the best. As for Mr. Lazar: sour grapes.

Sounds like a sore loser...

So in the next three years will the downtown be redeveloped? Will we have more "green space"? Will ALL residents (not only those backing the Iacobacci democrats) be treated with respect by our elected and appointed officials?

only time will tell- my crystal ball hasn't worked well lately

I sincerely hope that the downtown will be redeveloped; from the Oct. 24th meeting it seems there is progress being made. We will learn more about the plans on Nov. 8th as well.

"We saw how you would not allow OUR pictures of the dam involved in the Lionsgate project into the record..."

I did not support Lazar, but it was Planning Board head LaQuaglia who was knee deep in the Liongate quagmire.

I voted for McCarthy, but I didn't like it. Lazar just seemed worse given his record on development.

Can't we get a worthwhile candidate in here? Are there term limits? How do we get rid of McCarthy without getting someone even worse?

It'll be real interesting to see what happens now that they've kept their seats. Will the momentum begun at the 10/24 meeting keep going or more of the same? I'm anxious to see. I want to shop in Blfd Center again and not worry about being there after dark or needing to carry enought cash to pay for stuff at another dollar store.

Such is democracy, choosing from among the lesser of two evils (or the lesser of two weasels).

I think many of us held our nose as we pressed the button for McCarthy, thinking that as undesirable he may be, Lazar would be worse.

"There is no hope for the town, it's the same old, the same thing (the Democrats) have been doing for the past six years," Lazar said. "This town isn't an issue-oriented town anymore. It's a party-oriented town."

Looks like Mr. Lazar is still not listening. The residents tried to tell him time and time again at the Zoning meetings for 1242 Broad and he didn't listen. He might have heard us but he didn't listen. We told him again on election day and -- judging from the quote above -- it seems like he he heard us but once again he is not listening. Now, what we need to do is keep telling Mayor McCarthy until he finally gets it... Could be fun.

Porkroll, you hit the nail on the head. Perfectly said!
