Caching In

Thursday, November 8, 2007

Whether you're looking for a fun family activity, or a new outdoor singles scene, you might check out Geocaching. Geocaching is a trendy new adventure game for GPS users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the full capability of a GPS unit(if you don't have GPS, stay tuned). The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. If you take something out, you should try to leave something for the cache. What is usually in a cache? A cache can come in many forms but the key item will invariably be the logbook. The logbook contains information from the founder of the cache and notes from the cache's visitors. A logbook might contain information about nearby attractions, coordinates to other unpublished caches, and even jokes written by visitors. If you get some information from a logbook you should give some back. At the very least you can leave the date and time you visited the cache. Larger caches may consist of a waterproof plastic bucket placed tastefully within the local terrain. The bucket might contain any number of more or less valuable items. These items turn the cache into a true treasure hunt. Geocaching is really just the next evolution of the centuries old tradition of letterboxing with trails that can be found all over New Jersey -- even as close as Bloomfield & Montclair.

This has been one of my favourite hobbies for some time.

Using GPS to drive your car all over the state to play a CO2 belching version of Hide and Seek?

How very Eco.

Geoff, haven't you heard the world is ending?

That's ok. I'm sure the relentless march towards $3/gal for regular will dampen the enthusiasm of some of thes GPS junkies.

I passed the Shell on Watchung Ave in Bloomfield this morning on the way to work and if my eyes were to be believed, regular was $2.89! Holy moly!

I know the higher grades have already broken the $3 barrier, but I only use regular. Now it's real for me.

Worse yet - NJ has the cheapest gas in the nation. The average in Cali for reg is $3.36.

Well, you don't HAVE to drive all over. I assure you, there are plenty of geocaches within walking or bicycle distance.

Actually, State, all gas/crude oil all over the globe sells for exactly the same wholesale price. The reason they pay $6 in Europe or $3.36 in california is because the taxes are higher.

So NJ doesn't have the "cheapest gas in the nation". California has the "highest tax in the nation."

While crude sells for about the same price (Venezuelan crude is a little more expensive, for example because of the way its extracted), gas (which is refined from crude) is cheaper in various places for lots of different reasons. The usual reason that is cited for gas being cheaper in NJ is the amount of refineries here.

Geocaching??....I guess whatever blows your skirt up...
yeesh
I think this one needs to be filed under "get a life' or "too much time on my hands".

The geocaches I look for are usually in parks or otherwise in remote areas. Since I go hiking regularly anyway, this isn't extra driving. You're probably thinking of the gps receivers in mid-to-high end cars. Geocaching is done on foot, with handheld receivers.

You might think the gps would make finding the cache 'no contest', but receivers have limited accuracy, and what's more, don't tell you how to get to a particular location. If you're hiking, you may find yourself blocked by a cliff, lake, or dense undergrowth. You have to think.

You should all try it... it appeals to a lot of people. People who like hiking, people who like the treasure hunt at the end, and people who like playing with technology.
