I guess I am really boring but I mainly listen to technology podcasts...

Posted by RealHawker | November 13, 2007 3:41 PM

I recognize Hugh Masekela, and I think I heard of Patti Scialfa. Who are those other people?

I know, dating myself. :)

But a Top Ten list without Junior (Guitar) Brown's "You're Wanted by the Po-lice and My Wife Thinks You're Dead" just ain't a top 10...

Jeff Buckeley is fine; however, Leonard Cohen would swarm my top ten--everything from the early Teachers to the later Dear Heather....

The lengths to which the proprietors of this site will go on to fill space on really slow news days never cease to amaze and amuse me.

Posted by cathar | November 13, 2007 4:48 PM

cathar....

.... and I keep coming back every 5 mins.

Live long Baristanet. Live long!

Speaking of music, please enjoy this flash back from the 1970's. Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James and the Shondells. One of my all-time favorites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m9d4IyCmIs

Posted by AnitaSmith | November 13, 2007 5:17 PM

By the way, the Tommy James and the Shondells video was from the Bitter End in New York.

Posted by AnitaSmith | November 13, 2007 5:25 PM

That you (or I, for that matter) keep coming back "every five minutes" probably says as much about the limitations of one's other intellectual interests as it does the inherent fascinations of Baristanet, prof. Or have you never thought of it quite that way?

Posted by cathar | November 13, 2007 5:30 PM

I work best with little diversions.

Posted by profwilliams | November 13, 2007 5:38 PM

Cathar -- you just responded to the prof in exactly five minutes!

Make me happy and reveal your musical preferences.

Okay, Liz, I'll gladly attempt to make you happy (though not with the same kind of amative longing walleroo would probably bring to the assignment:

1 & 2) "Under Your Spell Again" and "Together Again," both from "Dwight Sings Buck," Dwight Yoakam's new cd

3)Arvo Part's "Berliner Messe" by Paul Hillier and the Theatre of Voices

4) "Rain In The Summertime," The Alarm

5) "Clara," from the Scott Walker cd "the Drift"

6) "It Just Comes Natural," George Strait

7) "Fragments Of A Prayer," John Tavener, from the non-pop soundtrack for "Children Of Men"

8) "Don't Leave Me This Way," The Communards

9) "I Can Still Make Cheyenne," George Strait

10) The entire "Porgy & Bess" album from the Modern Jazz Quartet (it's short)

And two bonus cuts because it's hard to winnow down to 12:

11) Per Norgard's "Winter Hymn," Paul Hillier & The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir

12) "Immortal Memory," Lisa Gerrard and Patrick Cassidy

And while I have no idea if all or any of the above are available via Itunes, Liz, all have been played at least 3 times during the last 2 weeks. I trust this meets your request of earlier tonight.

Posted by cathar | November 13, 2007 11:32 PM

wooooooooooow dreams do come true.

And, Liz, I have one final addition, this one to supply some "local interest": Any cut from the two cd's by The October Project, but also "Going Home" from the solo cd by that group's former lead singer, Montclair's own Mary Fahl. She may be, unfairly, somewhat obscure, but she's worth more than passing mention on this website given all the semi-nobodies and tank-town operations already praised to the bloody gills here. Goodnight now.

My name keeps getting bandied around rather carelessly.

All right, here goes:

Tangerine (Baker)
Bye Bye Blackbird (Davis)
Miles Ahead (Davis and Evans)
Like Someone In Love (Morgan)
Kind of Blue (Davis, entire album)
Milestones (Davis, entire album, especially Billy Boy)
You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go (Dylan)
Tangled Up In Blue (Dylan)
First Symphony (Mahler)
Between the Bars (Smith)
German Requiem (Brahms)
Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (Zawinal)
Joyspring (Brown)
My Favorite Things (Coltrane)
J'Ai Deux Amours (Peyroux)

This exercise reminds me of that great British radio show Desert Island Discs, though on a desert island I'd eventually need somethign (anything) by Bach and somethign by Mozart (doesn't matter what).

Posted by walleroo | November 14, 2007 2:11 AM

I almost forgot:

Crying (Orbison)

Posted by walleroo | November 14, 2007 2:13 AM

Add Amy Whinehouses' Rehab--great chic, great music, a little f*up

Posted by Laura Loonie | November 14, 2007 6:08 AM

Okay, no one else did it, so:

10. "Crying" by George Steinbrenner and the NY Yankees.

9. "Between Two Loves" by Paris Hilton and the Passersby.

8. "That's What you Get for Lovin' Me" by Donald J. Trump

7. "Show Me the Way to the Next Whisky Bar" by Dean Martin

6. "Don't Leave Me This Way" by any of my exes.

5. "Leonard Cohen's Greatest Hits" by Sylvia Plath

4. "Pave Paradise" by Bob Plofker

3. "Your Mind is on Vacation and Your Mouth is Working Overtime" by Any Number of Baristanet Contributors

2. "All Along the Watchtower" by Jehovah and the Witnesses

And the number one song on Conan's Top Ten:

1. "Stand By Your Man" by Hilary Clinton and Jim McGreevey.

So the marsupial is a die-hard jazz fan! Must be "somethign" (and twice!) in the springs he sips from out in the outback.

May I assume, walleroo, that you jumped in to try and impress Liz?

Posted by cathar | November 14, 2007 9:17 AM

BOB Plofker?

Posted by Debbie | November 14, 2007 10:19 AM

It's just the Dylan in him, I guess. (Been so long without a trash-Plofker thread I musta forgot his name.)

Very funny, Conan.

There was a hormonally tumultuous period of my youth, Frankgg, when the sight and sound of Chaka Khan would send me into something like rapture. She seemed to be a physical impossibility, like something out of quantum physics.

I don't need to impress Liz, cathar. She was long ago completely bowled over by the sheer force of my personal charisma and intellectual brilliance.

Posted by walleroo | November 14, 2007 11:58 AM

Grazie Liz! I agree about Chaka Khan, Waterloo.

Here's my dance list -

Stop! In the Name of Love - Dianna Ross & The Supremes

Chaka Khan, wee marsupial? The chorus of her biggest hit is so dopily self-referential as to astound. She is not "every woman," but then, you are not "everyman."

Walleroo, we (to borrow from Todd Rundgren) gotta get you a woman. A real woman. Minnie Pearl, maybe.

Posted by cathar | November 14, 2007 12:17 PM

Favorites are too numerous to mention but here are some:

1-Memories Are Made Of This-Dean Martin

6-Strange Fruit-Nina Simone

9-Play Myself Some Music-R. Stevie Moore

10-Ring of Fire-Anita Carter

Chaka Khan could have eaten Minnie Pearl for breakfast without even having to floss afterwards.

"Chaka Khan could have eaten Minnie Pearl for breakfast without even having to floss afterwards."

ROFLMAO! I got a visual of an Orca grazing among the penguins...

oops that would be 'Greetings from Asbury Park' write I, looking at my vinyl copy of this masterpiece while I work from home on this beautiful rainy day.

Posted by MellonBrush | November 15, 2007 10:24 AM

Mellon, I am streaming RP as I sit at my desk thanks to your tip about a year ago - I LOVE this station.

If you like Lucinda Williams then try Gillian Welch and Susan Tedesci - fabulous vocalists.

Posted by Anne Prince | November 15, 2007 10:32 AM

Anyone remember the old radio station 99X??

I'm a fan of 107.1 the Peak. A great station that is hard to get (but you can stream it online).

And of course on Sirius: The Spectrum and First Wave.

(But I need my morning mix for talk: Morning Addition/Howard Stern/Brian Lehrer.)

Posted by profwilliams | November 15, 2007 10:35 AM

Cheers to Mellon for the tip! I've had it on for the last four hours.

And Prof, I love the Peak, but it never comes in. Great to know it's online, thanks!

And my list of the moment...

Boogie Chillen - John Lee Hooker

The Sunny Side of the Street - Pogues

Here Comes the Flood – Peter Gabriel

The Space race is Over – Billy Bragg

Under Me Sensi - Long Beach Dub All Stars & Barrington Levy

Hooch – Everything

Hoochie Coochie Man – Muddy Waters

Use Me – Bill Withers

Sneakin Sally Through the Alley – Robert Palmer
