Four Hours of Free Iced Java

Friday, November 2, 2007

A tipster sends a java alert, seen in a NY paper today: Free 16 oz ice coffee at Dunkin' Donuts metro NJ and NY stores today: 10 am to 2 pm. Iced? So remind me, is DD's latte better than Starbuck's?

That's so nice of them. I'm sure Starbucks will be giving away their swill next week. Not.

Dunkin' Donuts kills Starbucks.

Now if I only liked the iced stuff.........

Posted by profwilliams | November 2, 2007 11:41 AM

What? Starbucks is real full bodied coffee and not that watered down, no guts stuff you get at doughnutland. Go to turkey or north africa where the stuff is from, they would laugh at the weak swill gringos call coffee. DD coffee is like stepped on coke, to weak to have any kick so why bother.

I LIKE the iced stuff but not really in November. Did someone at DD bother to check the calendar?

I think that if you went to Turkey or North Africa, doing timein....(I can only speak from experience about the latter), they'd actually be more likely to offer you mint tea than coffee in their homes. And the reference to cocaine was needlessly tacky, whether or no you post from your own experience.

That noted, DD's pumpkin lattes, iced or not, are wonderful. A fairly priced workingman's sort of place, whereas Starbuck's has pretensions. I prefer old guys arguing about the hiring of Joe Girardi at DD to earnest guys in black horn rims perched over their laptops at the other place.

No guts - no extra chest hair.

I am a proud DD coffee-drinking gringo.

Ok, I have to know - what is "stepped on coke?"

Posted by ackme | November 2, 2007 12:30 PM

Yes, knowingly tacky on the coke reference just a metaphor for watering something down to the point of being, well..pointless(as if there was a point to the coke addled 80s). And i do not like the "scene" at starbucks either, I would agree with you on the two old guys talking baseball and no laptops. It is just the only place I know to get a dark, rich, fullbodied cup of coffee.
My experience in turkey and africa did not include mint tea but good, strong, dark coffee.

My experiences in North Africa, doingtime in...., included, besides the mint tea, a threat from one host to cut my gonads out and feed them to his goats after I'd dopily but innocently remarked that he had a very good looking wife. (Classily, however, he uttered this threat in French.)

If you want strong coffee, allow me to suggest Cafe Bustelo and, as another poster noted, Cafe Lavazza if you make espresso. Both are (logically) always in stock at Corrado's.

Posted by cathar | November 2, 2007 1:41 PM

Cafe Bustelo is readily available in most bodegas and convenience stores.

Ok on the Bustello and Lavazza but who will make it for me?
I had a somewhat different experience in Africa, when I talked about the headman's daughter he killed a goat and had me eat the gonads. This crosscultural stuff can be tricky.

Ps
Do we have a Bodega in the ville? Chock full o nuts(a small pun as regards the above story) is good coffee too.
But still in my pre-coffee daze I need a cup ready and handded to me....now where did those wives of mine run off to?

Posted by doingtimeintheburbs | November 2, 2007 2:00 PM

Ahh, Chock Full O' Nuts! I remember going to the one on Broad St in Newark back in the sixties. Nowadays I frequent DD AND Starbuck's depending on my mood and how many spondoolicks I have in my pocket. When I want to relax and people watch, I stop in Bean's on Church St. while my offspring swim at the Y.

If you ate the goat gonads, doingtimein...., then I'm sure there's quite enough gumption in your stomach for you to simply scarf down ground coffee and to let the acids there "brew" it for you. So no one has to "make it" for someone you. (Such sloth, however!)

"Ahh, Chock Full O' Nuts!"

Is that code name for goat gonads?

Posted by Miss Martta | November 2, 2007 3:39 PM

Cather, sounds one step worse then cowboy coffee(throw grounds into cup of hot water wait for them to settle to the bottom and drink. sort of like a french press without the press)I am not above sloth especially if will help get cafine to me quicker.
