Siena's Starbucks Officially Open

Thursday, November 29, 2007

The new (and third) Montclair Starbucks is now serving java; John Zingali sends a photo. We hear they've got it decorated like a living room inside. That's good, because folks who haven't yet been able to move into the Siena will have somewhere to sit.

Speaking of the Siena, there's an open house to tour completed homes on Sunday, 12/9.

Hahnes? Hahnes is that you?

I have friends who live in the building directly behind Siena and we were able to talk to a couple who were looking at one of the units. (the buildings are close enough that they were on their balcony, we were on ours and no shouting was needed to chat)

To quote the very nice couple "It's nice, but it's not half a million dollars nice"

Satan needs a place to live too, and he likes hot coffee...

My small, 40-year-old condo in Montclair (which I sold 4 years ago) is now selling for $250K. . .it's crazy. Not too long ago condos were within reach of a single person or couple as a first home, but now that is no longer possible.

There is a Starbucks opening in my garage next weekend. It's very small and only serves 'solos', but is expected to be very trendy with all the 'right' people.

I thought Satan was into sourmash.

I stick with Cafe Eclectic Thank you very much, how many Starbucks does one town freaking need?

But this Starbucks is special.. It is "To the north and west... you'll discover dramatic mountains, lakes, and forests. Yet, just 12 miles away from your New Jersey condo (Starbucks), you can enjoy all the accoutrements of cosmopolitan living in Manhattan. Newark's Liberty International Airport is also just minutes away, placing world-class destinations right at the doorstep"

I didn't know I was minutes away from Newark Int airport - why do I always leave 45 minutes to get there?? Or is that minutes in 'concorde-speed'??

You might be minutes away from EWR but you're hours delayed.

Its funny, when Starbucks is a relatively new, growing enterprise, having a Starbucks come to your town is like the greatest thing in the world. It's like a stamp of approval on the town.
And now, nothing but hate, because its a global publicly traded entity.

Lets face it, Starbucks offers a decent product. There are independent chains as well, and they will always be able to offer something unique and a local flavor which Starbucks will not be able to match - and will not try to match.
There is room for all of them. Offer me a good brew, good service, and free WiFi and I'll be at any of those independent coffee houses.

They're not stupid, they wont keep the one next to Whole Foods open much longer. So relax, people, the downtown Montclair area will have only one Starbucks. You can breathe a sigh of relief.

The one next to Whole Foods is closing....Whole Foods owns that space, so I hear.

What will happen to Beans; my favorite coffee bean emporium?

Posted by surprise | November 30, 2007 8:11 AM

Thanks to Desslok for the LOL of the day. I agree with karenk that the arrival of another Starbucks does not signal the end of the world as we know it. BTW, do they offer free wifi?

I've got a feeling they will be just fine.

The SBx will lose some business because the impulse shoppers who stop on their way to Whole Foods will not go to the new SBx because it is out of the way. On the other hand, there will be a whole condo full of new people unfamiliar with Montclair living right above it. So, the SBx will have plenty of business, Beans will probably keep about the same business (maybe a bit more as the Sienna dwellers get to know the town), and life will go on as normal.

My favorite coffee spot in town? The little hole in the wall convenience store next to Dem Two Hands. Why? Because I pass it on my trek to the municipal lot where I keep my car, the coffee is strong and tasty (even if they only offer coffee flavored coffee in only one size), and it costs $1.00.

Does anyone know when is the new Starbucks in Glen Ridge (next to the Bottle King) is opening? There's a "coming soon" sign in front of the space, and construction happening inside, but what about a date?

Posted by bioniclime | November 30, 2007 9:25 AM

The Glen Ridge starbucks is scheduled to open in december, barring any delays.

the whole foods starbucks will be around for another year before closing.

My biggest concern is parking around the Church Street location. It was easy to find a spot on Bloomfield Ave or in the Fresh Fields parking lot (except for those damn speed bumps - hard to get coffee off the inside of the roof of your car ;~)

I'm moving into The Siena shortly, and have no reason to patronize Starbucks, or NYHC for that matter..with The Y across the street, and Beans right there.

to hrhppg:

Do you know if that building that backs the Siena is rental or condo? I really like that place... even with that giant thing behind it.

I've never been to Beans, but online their hours are listed as 930-730.

Honestly, if you are a coffee shop that hopes to compete, shouldn't you be open a little earlier? A lot of people would like their first cup well before 930 in the morning.
