Bliss in Bloomfield?

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

If it's hard to imagine high-end hedonism happening on Broad Street in Bloomfield, you can be forgiven. The area known as the North Center is a mishmash of nail salons and pubs, anchored by a McDonald's and a CVS. But Lerrick Santos and Oliver Dimaya have carved a brand new spa out of the former Village Cupboard, and both the opulence and the prices may have you thinking you're actually on Church Street in Montclair.

Santos was an executive at Estee Lauder for 17 years, and got tired of hopscotching around the globe. Dimaya was a high-end optician, finding just the right specs for the Barbara Walters crowd. They have created Flic Spa as a place to practice both traditional and unusual forms of massage, including the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, an "ancient royal massage." That's one of the three two-hour Pacific massages that take place in the Raindance Room (left), which start with a sauna and end with a rain-like spritz from overhead. Not cheap: $195.

Not indulgent enough? The three-hour $395 luxury package includes sauna, rosemary scalp massage, aromatherapy, lemon sugar glow hand and foot treatment, massage and raindrop therapy.

And don't forget the complimentary flavored water or herbal tea.

Yes it sounds crazy, but Santos and Dimaya have created an antique-filled oasis on Broad Street, and they're as personable as any entrepreneurs we've encountered. We haven't tried any of the treatments yet, but two of us have birthdays coming up, and we've left broad hints with our husbands. Flic is offering 20% to all customers for the month of December.

But is Flic Spa enough to turn the North Center around? There's a new Indian restaurant, Aroma, going in across the street, but a tipster complains that "The Town Pub is still a raging eyesore after its recent makeover."

Damage to one of the doorways has never been fixed, and the styrene filling in the insulation is leaking out. The peach colored stucco is marred by dirty heel prints made by smokers and cell-phoners. The old Thai restaurant location has its window papered over. A plastic sign twists in the wind.

Well, Bloomfielders, you tell us. Are luxury and Broad Street compatible?

Pubs? The many other restaurants besides Vinnie's and Angelo's include Pandan, Brookside Thai and Bohemia. An Indian eatery called Aroma will be replacing Savory Cafe and another called Natraj will be opening down the street. Perhaps you need some high-end specs.

I think I'll head on over to the Town Pub for some hops therapy later.

Pray tell, what is "raindrop therapy?" Is that fancy expression for getting caught in the rain?

I had the pleasure of meeting Lerrick and Oliver Friday night. They are very enthused about their new business venture and the pictures look wonderful! I am looking forward to checking them out soon. The Luxury Package sounds like it would make a great gift from Santa.....

Good luck! Anything that has any kind of taste is greatly welcomed in Bloomfield.
I'm trying to have a calm end of the year so I'm not even going to think about the Redevelopment plan, Trader Joes, or full day kindergarten in this town...

I looked up "lomi lomi," as in an "ancient royal massage," on a few Hawaiian-English dictionaries for curiosity. All it really means is "massage massage" since lomi is the word for massage. At best, it means 'massage crush." (Or "crush massage!") Really, they couldn't have come up with a better verbal shuck than that for $195?

But Mary, your typification of Bloomfield as terribly in need of good taste approaches condescension. Was that quite what you intended?

Posted by cathar | December 18, 2007 10:40 AM

We in Bloomfield don't "aspire" to be Montclair.

We have lots of things going for us- some great restaurants (including Senioritas), much lower taxes than Montclair, our streets get plowed, our recyclables and bulk get picked up (unlike Montclair that suspends bulk pickup in the summer months)we're gettin our own skateboard park, and we have our own train station.

We have lovely homes and lovely parks, including Brookdale.

We also don't have Montclair's parking problems- come eat and spa in Bloomfield. You'll leave relaxed and full!!

we also have some great old time BARS!

Thanks for the info on Flic Spa! I hope they make it.

"Raindrop therapy." Is that what the CIA is calling it now?

Posted by Jim | December 18, 2007 10:55 AM

I'm not going to walk into an argument about taste. I think the fire damaged 2nd floor building and neon signs and nail and spa and 99 cent stores downtown are beautiful. Although I have to say, they did a great job with the lights on the townhall and library- and I'm not a big fan of decorations- Listen. Just give me full day kindergarten and I'll keep my mouth shut and never say anything that could possibly suggest condescension. Besides, we really are all in this together, we who live in Bloomfield. So seriously, sorry if I offended you in any way.

Posted by Mary | December 18, 2007 11:01 AM

LOL @ Jim.

Personally, I think spending $200 on a massage is insanity. But, I also think some of the prices they charge for a tiny bottle of perfume are equally insane. So, Mr. Santos is obviously used to catering to people outside of my scope of financial sensibility.

Good luck to 'em!

Methinks the Barista has not taken a stroll beyond CVS in a while. Sure, we still have FAR too many nail salons, but that stretch is fast becoming our little restaurant row. But shhh, don't tell the folks in Montclair and GR. They'll come and take all the good parking spots.

Posted by State Street Pete | December 18, 2007 11:10 AM

For $200, the massage should include limo service to and from the salon, healthy snacks while waiting for the session and a gift certificate to E.J. Korvettes!

Posted by MellonBrush | December 18, 2007 11:27 AM

As suspected, massage, massage was a little simplistic. I'm not waiting in line myself, but this is what should be in store for those who drop the $200.

Thanks to all of you for defending Bloomfield's North Center -- the restaurants and merchants in that area are all quite classy enough for me, and I am the Russian judge when it comes to arbiting taste. Methinks such a place as the Flic will not attract many locals, but our local chop shops should benefit greatly from all those Lexi, Bimmers, and Mercs that will adorn the nearest parking lot... I will personally steal the first one that double-parks.

Posted by Conan | December 18, 2007 11:43 AM

I think it sounds great. I could go for a 30 minute foot message any day. I have never had a traditional massage nor has my spouse so perhaps this is our time to try a couples massage.

I wonder if they will do facials and those sort of treatments as well.

I wish them good luck.

I dont live in Bloomfield, am in -gasp- GR but I patronize more establishments on Broad street than Montclair by far.

Posted by Girl | December 18, 2007 11:59 AM

I wonder why they called the place 'Flic Spa', since, or so I gather from old Alain Delon and Jean-Pierre Melville movies, "flic" is nasty French slang for a cop.

Posted by cathar | December 18, 2007 12:02 PM

Looks like a great addition to the north center!

PS, Mary, sorry. I can't afford a tax increase to pay for your all-day kindergarten. I have two college students' tuition bills to pay!

Posted by AvidReader | December 18, 2007 1:05 PM

Sometimes the recipient may experience an emotional release as the massage can release and shift negative emotions, negative beliefs and other "stuff" that has been stored in the cells of the body...

So does the Lomilomi include a happy ending?

Posted by 13%annualtaxhike | December 18, 2007 1:28 PM

Avid, they said they're trying to do the Kindergarten within the current budget. Corzine just boosted the state's funding of Bloomfield schools by 20% so that should help.

Posted by State Street Pete | December 18, 2007 1:43 PM

Flic Spa:
It may be a play for comparison to Taj Exotica Resort & Spa Mauritius, a spa hotel in Flic-en-Flac, Indian Ocean, Mauritius.
Un flic just translates as "a cop", the "nasty French slang" is only in a movie (AKA Dirty Money)
Is someone looking to cop a nasty massage? (refuse to have any image in head, doh!)

Posted by Y.A.Duck | December 18, 2007 1:46 PM

Yes- they are trying to bring Kindergarten within their budget. If you want people with children moving into this town you attend to the schools. Full day kindergarten is for the betterment of the children. Period. No other reason. If you want families leaving town you don't attend to the public school system. Listen. We should all be pushing, together. To improve the public schools. To improve the downtown. I went to a Board of Ed meeting and there were a total of 3 parents. I've been emailing the Mayor and Council about calling Trader Joes, even gave them the phone number- just to see if they could make a call. This is not about Trader Joes. And guess what, Trader Joes apparently was interested a few years ago but they couldn't do anything because of the previous developer. This is about if they can actually work together and enact things. That fellow from Nework said some town hire recruiters to bring in businesses- so its not all in the developers hands. What incentives can this town give, to change itself. We have to give to get. And frankly, this really is a beautiful town with such hope and promise. In my fantasy mind the Mayor and Council members are working hard and making great advances and that is why they did not have the early December redevelopment meeting they promised. Thanks restaurants. Thanks business owner taking a chance here-

Posted by meinbloomfield | December 18, 2007 2:52 PM

mein, you did read the previous posts right?

And just so you know, Bloomfield has a half day kindergarten at the moment that we already pay for. The surrounding towns have come top the conclusion that full day is good idea and it's about time Bloomfield followed suit.

Comments like "I don't have kids so I don't want to pay more for education" make me laugh. We have a public education system in this country. If you don't want to pay a share then try moving to a place without kids.

Posted by State Street Pete | December 18, 2007 3:23 PM

I think I'll take the ol' time machine back to the 60's and throw down a shot & a beer at Cutar's Tap Room.

BLOOMFIELD! Sounds like a great place, but in the WRONG place!

Location, Location, Location! I think the median income is one-third of Montclair or Millburn.

Apparently, strategic thinking was left at the door when leaving Estee's house!

Good luck--I'll probably go and try it, but worried that my new car may get stolen. Do you think they can pick me up?
LOL!

Posted by Laura Loonie | December 19, 2007 6:39 AM

You'll be find in that area- or rather- as fine as anywhere.

Posted by Mary | December 19, 2007 8:19 AM

Just don't double park, Loonie :) Although getting close to the curb on Broad Street -- after the horrid job Bloomfield did cleaning up after the weekend slushstorm -- might be impossible. My next door neighbor's six-year old grandson could have done a better job with his toy Tonka truck. And for this, we in Bloomfield -- though clearly not as wealthy as our neighbors in Glen Ridge or Uppity Montclair -- pay an increasingly similar amount in taxes. It's not easy being Brooklyn. Of course, I am also willing to bet that a lot of the income in Bloomfield goes unreported, which may affect those statistics somewhat.

Posted by Conan | December 19, 2007 8:29 AM

There's much more auto theft in montclair- look at the police blotter.
Just don't leave you car running when you go to get something in the house!

We have as good theives as anywhere else.

Bloomfields taxes are less than 1/2 of Montclair's.

ha ha ha. Well, I assure you, a spa such as Flic is going to be top of the line restorative treatment. Period. Nothing sexual or illegal. That said, the first thing I did when I moved to Bloomfield 1 1/2 years ago was inadvertently discover a fake "spa" and get the police to shut it down..."They pop up as soon as we shut them down" were the welcoming words of my new town police. They were really great about it- I have to say. Hopefully those fake spa days are ending-for instance-everyone wants to make sure the 2nd go-go bar that has asked for a license doesn't get it.
Watch your town carefully- its at a turning point...your choice where you want it to go...

Posted by Mary | December 19, 2007 9:52 AM

The prices are about what you would expect to pay for a high-end spa, and the experience will probably be worth it. I have been lucky enough to get these experiences free from suppliers a few times (in the city mainly) and it would be nice to get a similar experience right in my own town. I hope it succeeds. I may be willing to shell out my own money this time since it's so convenient!

I agree with all of the comments about the North Center and all the great restaurants there. We go to Pandan and Brookside Thai all the time, and will certainly frequent the new Indian restaurants. We used to have to go to Montclair for Indian food and are very glad that it's finally coming to Bloomfield.

Absolutely fantastic! I regularly get massages in various places, and this is now my favorite.
The locale itself is nicely decorated and the owners are all about customer service.
The prices are fair for high-end spas, but you get even more.
The ten-minute foot soak in the rose-petaled, mineral infused water, while sipping tea is relaxing.
The massage is the full 60 minutes - not like other places where an "hour" massage is actually 50 minutes.
I highly recommend Flic!

Flic is fantastic! I was there yesterday and was totally blown away. Been to great spas all over the country and the Raindance Therapy was by far the coolest treatment ever. Yes, its pricey - but well worth every dime! Especially since the 120 minute treatment was more like 150.

WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL!!!!
