New and Shiny in Bloomfield Center

Thursday, January 10, 2008

More evidence that Bloomfield is getting past it reputation as the mega-capital of 99-cent stores. First, we reported the opening of the top-of-the-line Flic Spa on Broad Street. Now, in the development-challenged Bloomfield Center comes another new business that looks like it would be easily as at home on Church Street. Welcome to Steven Mohn Furniture & Design, at 35 Lackawanna Place, across from the Bloomfield train station.

Mohn's store is a delightful blend of well-priced accessories (Venetian glass bottles, shown, $40 to $65) and deeply-discounted furniture that he brings back from Henredon and Bernhardt in North Carolina. Mohn takes discarded showroom pieces and returned merchandise -- stuff you might see with a Martha Stewart or Pottery Barn label -- and is able to offer it at about half retail price. You'll see great sofas for under $1000, and substantial beds, bar cabinets, dressers and etigiers etageres from $600 to $1500.

Mohn describes his collection as "traditional-looking pieces with a modern edge" -- or "transitional" as they call it in the decorating trade.

A former recruiter, who recently moved to Bloomfield's Silk Mill Lofts from the city, Mohn sees his store as part of a Bloomfield renaissance. "A couple of a galleries, a couple of cute restaurants and a coffee shop, and the area really has it made," he said.

Watch out, Church Street. With the currently cheap rents, Bloomfield Center could become Baristaville's newest chichi destination.

Hey, that's great! I'll certainly stop in, maybe even tonight.

Is that the old pet store?

I can't make it until Saturday, but I will definitely go there. I think it's important to support any good local businesses that are taking a chance in some of the less travelled neighborhoods.

It's around the corner from the 99 cents store.

I'll stop by after getting my hair braided and my nails done.

I went to Steven's opening last Friday night and it's a delightful store!! The prices are unbelievable and the merchandise is nice quality. It is a wonderful store and a definite asset to Bloomfield. I agree 100% - we need to turn that area and Washington Street into a mini mall area ala Church Street and the area will be fantastic!! It will happen - I have hope in the new consultant group that the township has hired - I really liked their presentation at the meeting they had last year. And for those people who are asking when the next one is, I have heard that there will be one soon - they just wanted to wait until after the holidays to schedule one.

It's "etageres" and there's an accent on the first 'e,', not "etigiers."

I love doing this, by the way.

Hmmppfff. I think Bloomfield is perfectly upscaled the way it is. We don't need to be Church Street Redux or Church Street Reduced. I mean, we have a Barney's: what else does one need? But I do wish Steven well and we will stop in and look around for some casual furniture for the Carriage House.

I agree that another Church Street is not needed, but every time I wander down Washington Street I can't help imagining what it could be like--it has so much potential to be a very charming area. I hope that the opening of a store like this one will encourage other business owners to consider it.

Does anyone know if there is a plan for anything to move in or fix up the old 7 Hills space? And what happened with the pet store - the "massage parlor" door has an open sign but the pet store I thought was long closed.

So you can get a manicure, some 99c items AND a happy ending.

I will check it out when I go to my Qi Gong class at Starseed which is also in Lackawanna Place--although I could not find it last week.

I wish Mr. Mohn the best of luck. It's a lovely little store and a lovely alternative to going over to Church St.

I think the pet supply store moved to East Orange. Indeed, that section of town looks more like Doomfield. Looking forward to LaWanda's soul food restaurant. There also seems to be some construction on the corner of Washington where the trophy shop and that nail salon used to be.

Starseed has moved back to Montclair on Glenridge Ave on the east side south(?) of the bookstore

My brother-in-law, an English professor and proof-reader to the chancellor of Fort Wayne's Purdue University, used to correct spelling and grammar on all the Fort Wayne restaurant menus on which he found errors. When any student or employee saw brown ink crossing out an apostrophe or correcting spelling on the menu, he knew that Steven Hollander had been there.
