Wellmont One Step Closer to Nightlife

Thursday, January 10, 2008

Montclair's Wellmont Theater has been dark for months, but behind the scenes, plans to turn the historic theater into a 2200-seat concert hall have inched along.

The latest development: The Rosen Group, which is under contract with Steve Plofker to buy the building, has received preliminary approval for a liquor license. It still has to advertise the application in the Montclair Times and get the okay from the town council and the state.

The Rosen Group agreed to pay Plofker approximately $1.5 million for the building and another $750,000 for the liquor license. Plofker acquired the Marlboro Inn's liquor license for $250,000.

Although the Rosen Group was initially concerned about parking, talks with town officials and nearby businesses with leasable parking space have reassured them that spots are available at night. But the concert hall wouldn't be financially viable without a liquor license, according to Louis Litvin, the Rosen Group's CFO.

Litvin says the company has talked to arts and historic organization and plans to open the building to government, non-profit and arts groups for use on nights when there aren't shows. "Everyone involved in this venue recognizes the importance of having good relations, not only with Montclair, but with all the surrounding towns."

It plans to keep the historic facade and the Wellmont name and to put in $2 to $3 million into restoration. The Rosen Group is shooting for a September opening.

That's too bad. I liked it as a theater. (one of the last REAL movie theaters around). They showed cool flicks and had free coffee, too.

$1.5 million for the Wellmont, and the owners of the Olympic space want $5 million?

This is excellent news. Return of the arts to Montclair!

Historic Facade?? I hate to say this but the historic facade and entrance were on Bloomfield Ave. That side street photo you show was just exit doors way back when. Maybe FrankGG can pull a real archive photo from the Montclair Historic Society to show the present and future owners.

There are vintage post cards of the Wellmont Theatre Building showing the grand Bloomfield Avenue entrance. One image is in Richard Cacioppo's "Glory of Montclair" 1995, page 104 and the another is in "Images of Montclair" by Philip Edward Jaeger 1998, page 83. I remember having seen these images at the Montclair Public Library in the Local History Collection.

I think this is great news. Montclair could use a nice concert venue to provide a viable alternative to heading into Manhattan or the Morristown Community Theater for shows.

I think the last movie I saw at the old Wellmont was "Young Einstein". I remember that plaster from the ceiling fell on me during the movie.

The last thing I saw at the Wellmont was The Legend of Billie Jean. I also has plaster fall around me.

While I'm glad to hear the Wellmont is still being used as *some* sort of theater, I'm bummed that I never won that lotto drawing to buy the theater myself and renovate it back to its old glory (or at least as close as one can get without closing Sesame).

... also that I'm still not a lotto-winning millionaire.

I'm glad it's being saved and adapted for a viable use. It's harder and harder to keep movie theaters viable what with on demand movies and Netflix, etc.

The theater used to have a group of historic photos of the original theater in the lobby as I recall.

My mom talks about it's heyday from when she growing up in Montclair.

I remember it as the sketchiest of the 3 local theaters.

M X Pat...Could you clarify the word "Sketchiest"?

The last film I saw at the Wellmont was a Polish film about Chopin (I think). What stands out more for Western Union--all in Polish language. Included were a tote and a frisbee.

It was weird and Wellmont. You won't get that at Clearview Claridge--just overpriced snacks and raised film prices.

2200 seats. Where are the parking spaces? Maybe I am missing something.

The Wellmont was an awesome theatre, though it needed renovations. The upstairs was HUGE with so many seats and steep, graduated seating that could put you above the screen if you went high enough--I loved that. I'd go to many hard-to-find films there, all alone and relish the dark, vast space on the second floor. I saw some great movies there, including Velvet Goldmine.

I wanted to buy that place and turn it into a funky retro theatre, but alas, the Rosen Group has the money. What they don't have--despite what people are telling them--is the parking. There's parking at night? Really? WHERE?????????

I can fit three or four in my driveway, $30 a pop!
