Montclair's Wellmont Theater has been dark for months, but behind the scenes, plans to turn the historic theater into a 2200-seat concert hall have inched along.
The latest development: The Rosen Group, which is under contract with Steve Plofker to buy the building, has received preliminary approval for a liquor license. It still has to advertise the application in the Montclair Times and get the okay from the town council and the state.
The Rosen Group agreed to pay Plofker approximately $1.5 million for the building and another $750,000 for the liquor license. Plofker acquired the Marlboro Inn's liquor license for $250,000.
Although the Rosen Group was initially concerned about parking, talks with town officials and nearby businesses with leasable parking space have reassured them that spots are available at night. But the concert hall wouldn't be financially viable without a liquor license, according to Louis Litvin, the Rosen Group's CFO.
Litvin says the company has talked to arts and historic organization and plans to open the building to government, non-profit and arts groups for use on nights when there aren't shows. "Everyone involved in this venue recognizes the importance of having good relations, not only with Montclair, but with all the surrounding towns."
It plans to keep the historic facade and the Wellmont name and to put in $2 to $3 million into restoration. The Rosen Group is shooting for a September opening.

That's too bad. I liked it as a theater. (one of the last REAL movie theaters around). They showed cool flicks and had free coffee, too.
