David Tyree For Grand Marshal

He's Montclair's MVP. And since mentioning it here, tipsters have written us to officially start the campaign. Who better to kick off Montclair's Fourth of July parade than the inspirational David Tyree? More about his story, from the New York Times...

"What looked to be the lowest point in my life ended up being the greatest thing that ever happened to me," Tyree, speaking of his arrest in 2004, said Saturday morning while sitting at his kitchen table.

From special-teams demon to Super Bowl deity. From moonlighting drug dealer to born-again Christian. From a child who drank alcohol and smoked marijuana with his family to a sober father and husband who started his own nonprofit organization.

This is Tyree's version of his transformation.

A beautifully written story.

If not Tyree, who?

Dearest Liz, love of my life for always, would you please tell us who's in the dang pic? Can you give us at least just a general sense of who these folks might be? Thanks, 4ever yours etc,

Dearest one...
You had to follow the link, but here is the caption...

At the February 4 Board meeting, the Board of Education proudly donned blue shirts emblazoned with David Tyree's number.

DT (not to be confused with LT) mentioned his being from Monclair, by way of Orange, on Jimmy Kimmel's show the other night.

Thanks, buttercup.

get him to pay for the fieldhouse.

Why not MHS graduation speaker? His story is one that needs to be heard by young people. It is a story about choices made, good and bad. The July 4th parade is a grand waste of gasoline, a source or pollution and an enormous waste of Mr. Tyree's talents. Let's convince him to speak to our kids and share his story.

Seems like a really good guy guy, but I'm not overly excited about a high grauduation speech about how Jesus Christ is my personal savior and saved my life.

Plus, wouldn't this suggest to kids that you can do drugs and drink a ton in high school and still get drafted and make it to the NFL?

Charles Barclay, the basketball star, had it right when he said, "I am not a role model." Neither is David Tyree. He made one unique football catch. One. A lot of people had fun! A lot of people made money. Yippee.

But, I don't think we need anymore entertainers - rock, rap, athletes, or celebrity airheads - being put forward as heroes. Please, let's keep it in perspective.

You miss the point, Nana. That he is a fairly accomplished athlete might get some kids into the tent. But Tyree's message transcends athletics and entertainment. It is about making positive changes in your life. If that fabulous catch means a few more kids take his message to heart, I'm all for it.

I must say, as excited as I am about Tyree, Nana has a point.

Definitely make him grand marshal. Watching this unheralded hard working guy step up not once but TWICE to make the big play in the biggest game of his and his team mates careers is an inspiration to all of us working stiffs everywhere.

Lighten up guys. I don't see how diminishing Mr. Tyree's accomplishments (BTW, he made TWO big catches not just one) means that we cannot celebrate people other than entertainers. Keep it in perspective.

PS Are they going to sell any more of those Montclair High/ NY Giants David Tyree T Shirts. Last I checked they were sold out. I'd like to have one when I go to Cape Cod this summer.
