No Cats Or Hats Were Harmed In The Creation Of This Post

Monday, February 11, 2008

Meet Ginger--she's our adorable domestic short hair tabby. We adopted her as a kitten from PAWS several years ago. Obviously, she is a cat of even temperament, since she let me place all this paraphernalia on her. OR DID SHE?

Thanks to the miracle of Photoshop, I was able to take a simple snapshot of Ginger and create a festive costume for her with a few clicks of a mouse (no pun intended.) So what do you think, Baristaville? How do you like a cat with a costume that she didn't have to sit still for? While you're deciding, why don't you post your favorite pet photos here: Flickr Baristanet group

I think this is a subject that needs to be dropped.

Yes, it should be dropped, BUT will this group, it will just land on its feet and keep going.

We used to have a dog that we would photograph 'in costume' for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Holloween.

He wasn't thrilled about getting the costume but was accomodating, due, no doubt, to the cheddar cheese morsels we used to entice him to sit for the costuming and subsequent photo shoot.

We'd use the photos and some original verse in our holiday cards.

Sometimes when I'm at a friend's home over the holiday season, I'll see an old Christmas card with Burt dressed as Santa Paws and I'll remember that day when Burt got dressed up and played Santa for a few minutes.

My poor german shephard dog... when I was pregnant and tired of waiting for a baby to dress up, I got the bright idea to dress up the dog for Halloween. He was quite the pirate, complete with earring and eyepatch. He just kind of looked at me like, "I know, I know, it's the hormones" and tolerated me.

This is demeaning to all cats. What's next, making fun of cripples?

Sorry, but this is different and better how?

Rhetorical question really. No response required. I get it. Really.

i thought the photos of the pets from the bloomfield animal shelter were cute and very sweet. i also thought that the comments were getting angry and that there were hurt feelings and misunderstanding. so i thought it would be fun to show how the magic of photoshop can achieve silly and fun results with pets. i really don't think it's better--honest. i was just trying to lighten up a situation that got tense.
since we are all petlovers here, wouldn't it be great if we could focus on the sweetness and the beauty of the pets that the shelters care for so lovingly, and on the kinds of donations that these shelters can use.
for example, when i have clean but gently used blankets and towels, i bring them to PAWS and to my vet, who boards pets as well. they can always use them.

Hi Fran,

I agree things were getting too angry and the posts were not in the spirit of what the folks on the shelter's adoption committee are trying to do. The comments were hurtful to them, and that is (or should be) understandable. Volunteering at an animal shelter is extremely taxing emotionally. It's difficult to divorce yourself from the situation once you get really involved.

I don't know if you live in Montclair or Glen Ridge, but Glen Ridge residents should know that their animal shelter is Bloomfield/Bukowski, not PAWS as many believe.

Anyway, love your photoshopped kitty!

Hi Fran - what a great shot of Ginger...see it's not that hard to get a cute shot of one's pet.

Just think of all the fun 'Looks' one could get with photoshop, without bothering the animal.

And yes, a tip of my Hat to all those that volunteer at animal shelters..the bottom line, is to try and find homes for all the animals, and I hope such photos help said cause.

Reminder: Westminster Dog Show starts tonight on MSG.

thanks for your kind words, wayne. i must say, once i took photoshop classes with local photo genius jay seldin, it's become a kind of obsession with me:
"stop me before i photoshop again!!!"
and yes--the westminster dog show--liz, can i get a press pass to that? it would be awesome to attend!

Walleroo,

I agree with you. Cats have dignity. No one will put a hat on me. Just give me my favorite mouse toy.

Is it fair to the dogs? They end up backstage in cages.

Peace to all,
Tang Poohzie, the Original
(adopted from PAWS)

Okay, my three stinkers are up on flickr. What fun!

Her green eyes are beautiful or was that photoshopped also?
Well, she looks just as pissed as if you put an actual hat on a cat.

Posted by Mystic Spirit | February 11, 2008 10:59 PM

those eyes are super saturated via photoshop. they actually more grey-green. and you'd never guess from her stern expression that she is the sweetest and friendliest kitty imaginable-she never stops purring.
