Starbucks To Close Doors

Monday, February 25, 2008

Tomorrow, Starbucks is closing. Not for good, but for a three-hour coffee break/back to espresso training session to teach those Baristas how to foam correctly, rinse glasses and what not. Dunkin Donuts is seizing the opportunity to lure you over to their dark side with .99 cent lattes. Stores in Baristaville will close at 5:30 p.m. and reopen at 8:30 p.m.

The retraining is just one of a bunch of changes the chain is making (no more smelly egg sandwiches by years' end) to try and reclaim its coffee cachet. The Onion nails it here.

Went to Beans on Friday and got some really delicious FRENCH TOAST COFFEE.

Yes, it was so good that I had to type it in all caps and italics.

Posted by Generically named Mike | February 25, 2008 3:45 PM

need to try french toast coffee

what happens if I feel the need to yell "give me a venti double decaf with 2 shots of caffeine skim, no whip and hold the cinnamon" where am I supposed to go?!

I hope they teach them to shake the damn Soy before they dump it in.

Things haven't been the same since they switched from Silk to White Wave.

I worked at Starbucks for about a year and a half and have yet to have a drink from them as good as I would make it myself. It's the newfangled push button systems they have now. They sacrificed quality for efficiency.

Beans' French Toast roast has been my favorite for years!

Posted by Jim | February 25, 2008 4:01 PM

I've been cheating on Beans and have to come clean here. For years I have been buying my coffee @ Beans.

Recently, I have been buying ground coffee from Starbucks.

Am I going to go to hell for this?

Posted by MellonBrush | February 25, 2008 4:07 PM

Maybe the people at Beans will close for a few hours, too. Oh, wait, I forgot. They already know how to make good coffee.

Huh.

Besides, this is just a publicity stunt on Starbucks' part to see if they can lure in a few more customers after the training. In my youth, I worked plenty of service jobs and I never remember any of them closing the doors during work hours to refocus their staff.

Posted by scruffycat | February 25, 2008 4:09 PM

I hate that store. There is no where to sit, and looks like McCoffee. You would think that it being populated Montclair, they would be a little more Grand in their approach. But I am sure there is some pissy 20-something at corporate headquarters going, "Oh ! It is only New Jersey, and it is soooooo expensive!" Well go open stores somewhere else. Jersey needs size.

Posted by Brinew2 | February 25, 2008 4:12 PM

The new Starbucks in GR is pretty nice.

It's next to the Bottle King.

The baristas are very good (I think) and the ambience is more laid-back than the other 3 Montclair Starbucks.

Posted by MellonBrush | February 25, 2008 4:18 PM

Yeah, the GR Starbucks do a decent job, but I could do without the big guy with the weird hair proudly displaying the hickies on his neck.

Posted by BostonScott | February 25, 2008 4:29 PM

Oh yeah, that guy...

Posted by MellonBrush | February 25, 2008 4:31 PM

Yet another reason to not into one.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | February 25, 2008 4:35 PM

How come you guys get to salivate over hot models (in the other thread) while we women have to hear about a gross Starbucks barista with hickies on his neck? Just isn't fair, I tell ya.

Like this stunt is deserving of eternal damnation in fiery pits?

I hope one of the nice Bean's people see you sauntering out of SBs with your little bag of hickie-filled crack though. A little dose of guilt will you do you wonders no doubt.

If you're going to drink the SB's make sure you get waxed frequently.

Starbucks just has grown so large it is like the Borg in Star Trek. Those hickies are data conduits giving instructions from corporate headquarters. And they have treated NJ as the most vulnerable to mass assimilation. They were wrong.

Posted by Brinew2 | February 25, 2008 4:41 PM

Stepfordbucks? Now I'm really glad ...that I must go to,no no, starbucks...

Posted by Y.A.Duck | February 25, 2008 4:48 PM

On what should be the entrance door to the Sienna, obnoxious 27-year-old Starbux execs in Seattle put their name on the placard. Brain dead Sienna execs say OK! Now it looks like like the Starbucks building, but when you get inside you find just one more tiny, conservative McBeans. Not much to feel appreciative about, after all the millions stupid NJ consumers have poured into their corporate coffers, for them merely to experiment with putting stores in new areas.

Coffee is a beverage, not a religion. Your choice of coffee shop does not Define You.

Cup of coffee $1.50
Atmosphere $2.00
Support of a corporate entity that cares for nothing but profits:
Priceless! (at least they hope so)

Starbucks is OK once in a while, and I haven't tried Beans. But the idea that Dunkin' Donuts could lure anyone with that piss-water they claim is coffee is nuts.

Posted by sleepysleek | February 25, 2008 5:35 PM

they better keep their peppered bacon, egg and cheddar sandwich, it was one of the few good things to get at those stores and no, i didn't eat it here where there are local options, i ate it at penn station, where the local options had been dim, grim, and grimmer.

on the other hand, now that au bon pain is open at penn, i can't imagine going to starbucks for their cup up swill again.

oh and dunkin donuts is far superior to starbucks, coffeewise.

The GR S'Bucks needs to get the Hoover out more then once a day. It should be pristine for all us Ridgers!.....PAZ in CUN

Posted by PAZ | February 25, 2008 5:40 PM

Well, Friendship7, we're all entitled to our opinions. But my opinion is right, and yours is wrong. Dunkin Donuts coffee is thin, weak and useless. It's hot water with a vague coffee flavor.

Posted by sleepysleek | February 25, 2008 5:58 PM

The quality of Dunkin Donuts coffee is inversely related to the store's distance from Boston - the further from Boston, the worse the coffee. I agree with sleepysleek on this one. And don't get me started on Au Bon Pain. Everything that comes out of that franchise is total ass.

Cosi has THE WORST coffee I ever tasted in my life. Tastes like I imagine potting soil would taste like.

Posted by Miss Martta | February 25, 2008 6:56 PM

So what; Starbucks are closing for three hours. Big deal; is this all people have to worry about?

Starbucks needs a major rehaul. I avoid wherever possible. It has lost quality product and has become a waterhole for screaming brats and their frustrated mommies, much of the time. Oh, and the few who seem to have made a home there also populate the crowded, dirty-tabled establishment.

Drink up!

I would loved to have seen a Seattle's Best
go in at the Sienna instead of Starbucks.
I've never been disappointed with that chain.

All Starbuck shops are going through this retraining session.
Now that they've gotten rid of their corporate WalMart exec..who caused their rabbit breeding.... maybe they can take the company back to some basics.

I often buy my beans from Starbucks. They're far superior to what you get at Beans. When it comes to a brewed cup, however, Starbucks doesn't hold a candle to D&D, which makes a more flavorful and less bitter cup of coffee for less. Neither is as good as what I make at home, of course, but D&D will work in a pinch.

Seattles Best provides coffee at some Penn Station, Newark, venues. It is good and different.

I support Beans. I do not want to see it eaten up by Starbucks. I don't think it has to worry; our Starbucks have a long way to go.

The Starb. next to Whole Foods is scheduled to close soon, is it not?

Posted by surprise | February 25, 2008 8:36 PM

Dear Brinew2,

Better make certain that you never spell SIENA with two N's, when you refer to our renowned new downtown edifice, otherwise you may be instructed to review a map of Italy. Sienna: an earthy substance containing oxides of iron and usually of manganese that is brownish yellow when raw and orange red or reddish brown when burnt and is used as a pigment. These are the main ingedients found in Starbuck's coffee.

Posted by mojoe | February 25, 2008 9:07 PM

Who cares how you spell Sienna, when it's obviously the "Starbucks Building", perhaps even "Starbucks Plaza". If the Starbucks sign were any larger, you could read it from Upper Montclair.

"The quality of Dunkin Donuts coffee is inversely related to the store's distance from Boston - the further from Boston, the worse the coffee."

Spicoli speaks the truth!

"Am I going to go to hell for this?"

Yes, that and several other things, I am sure... :)

Hie thyself to A&P and buy a bag of Eight O'Clock (red bag) whole bean coffee. Beats DD in my book as a breakfast-strength roast. Mix those beans with some Eight O'Clcok Dark Roast and you get a brew that approaches Shitbucks [ed. comment], if you prefer the low end of the speed spectrum.

"The quality of Dunkin Donuts coffee is inversely related to the store's distance from Boston - the further from Boston, the worse the coffee."

Not any more; it useta be that the donuts were good in Metropolitan Boston DD's, too. But now that they are owned by a UK-based liquor importer, and have hired Celebrity Chef (is that like calling Ted Bundy a Celebrity Serial Killer?) Rachael Ray to be their spokes-bimbo, everything they touch stinks. Mediocrity abounds. BTW -- they are running the spot filmed at Bluestone Coffee on DD's corporate website.

"Starbucks To Close Doors" - ah, if only.

Perhaps the town council could close down for a couple of hours and learn the difference between governing and spending.

Posted by 13%annualtaxhike | February 26, 2008 10:23 AM

Had a conversation with a Barista -- a real Starbucks Barista of 6 years, not the blogging kind -- who said the push-button espresso machines Starbucks has installed in its chains make a much thinner cup of joe than the old machines.

Posted by walleroo | February 26, 2008 10:25 AM

Seems that coffee talk has replaced religion as taboo in passing conversation. I have counted several people believing they will actually be going to hell for coffee choices. That's some serious stuff.

Posted by ackme | February 26, 2008 5:17 PM

Well, see, there's regular hell and there's coffee hell.

Coffee hell is like regular hell except with no coffee. Which makes it worse than regular hell.

Posted by MellonBrush | February 26, 2008 5:21 PM

That's de-cafe hell.
