Candles In The Wind

Monday, March 10, 2008

Many homes In Montclair were still without power late last night following the wind storm that swept through Baristaville Saturday. Among them were Ingrid Murphy, visiting from the U.K.( pictured) and pup Millie. Ingrid is dog sitting Millie while her family is away on a ski trip. "I've been without power since about 9pm Saturday night," Ingrid told us. "I was surprised to hear from neighbors that the power goes out here in this section about four times a year. "I was even more surprised when a neighbor called the power company on Sunday morning and they said no one had complained about the power being out."

When Ingrid spotted PSE &G crews inspecting power lines in a neighbor's backyard late on Sunday, she thought the power might be back on last night. With the gas on, she was still able to boil water for a cuppa. Despite offers of a warm bed, Ingrid employed a British stiff upper lip and told us: "I'l be fine with a couple of hot water bottles."

PS. Ingrid called this morning to tell us PSE&G worked through the night and that power was restored around 2:15 am. The area affected was a section of South Mountain and Undercliff.

Next time you're in the same situation, Ingrid, you might break up a few of those Louis Cans chairs and tables and throw them in the fireplace to stay warm.

That looks a seance that's about to happen.

Those British dog-sitters go the extra mile. Ingrid will clutch Millie to her bosom, imparting her own precious body heat to the shivering pooch, until the heat comes back on.

To ensure a continuous heat supply, Ingrid will consume several jars of beef jerky for the duration of the power outage.

So strange that people can lose power in one part of town but not another.

We had the lights flicker a few times on Saturday, but that's about it.

Birch St. in Bloomfield is still out. PSE&G isn't even promising us a time anymore, just saying that it should be resolved sometime today. I'm thankful I have no property damage, 3 of my neighbors are not so lucky.

We're still waiting around Grove Street and Harvard where there are 7-8 houses that have been out since 7pm Saturday. Two downed wires due to a branch in the neighbor's yard, and so far, not one PSE&G truck. They still will not commit to when they might get the electricity flowing. Wonder if they'll pay for a nice hotel stay?

"I was surprised to hear from neighbors that the power goes out here in this section about four times a year."

The area I live in had that same problem for years. One time it happened and PSE&G showed up as a few of us were outside discussing how long it would be out this time. One of the workers came over to assure us he would get the power on asap. We told him about the frequency and asked why it went out so often, he said he didn't know. Amazingly enough 2 days later a supervisor and an engineer showed up. It turned out there was a bad capacitor on one of the poles that the crews were just resetting the safety breaker on. They replaced it about 5 years ago and we haven't lost power since. Those people might want to ask the same question.

A few years ago a medium sized tree fell on the front of a neighbor's house, taking down the power lines.

A PSE&G crew showed up and started to remove the tree. The crewman with the chainsaw was so consumed by the effort - it was still raining very hard and the wind was blowing - that he didn't spend much time figuring out where to drop the branches. Every minute or two we'd hear a loud crash or thump as a severed branch caromed off of the roof or smashed hedges and flower beds.

We found out later that the crewman's nickname was "Ka-boom".

When I first saw this photo, I wondered if the dog could be removed to reveal she is really the baristanet lady, with her mouth wide open.

Good one Katie!

I lost power multiple times for a few seconds, or just long enough that my FiOS on-demand had to reboot in the middle of Lipstick Jungle re-runs 4 separate times. That takes forever.

Birch St. is back online (at around noon says a neighbor), but about an hour ago PSEG rep. didn't seem to know it.

Think I'll ask my neighbor whose car got crushed by a car crushing (and electric line pulling) tree if I can get any groceries for them.
