Yesterday's tips about trouble in Montclair's South End described an avalanche of police cars, fire engine sirens, and hovering news helicopters in the area. A fire broke out around 5:30 pm bringing emergency vehicles to an Orange Road building, home to four families living above a Chinese Restaurant and a vacant storefront. The Star Ledger reports the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and there were no injuries.
The blaze damaged one apartment, and smoke damaged a second apartment, but the families in two other apartments also were displaced because the electricity was turned off, the battalion chief [Donato DiGeronimo] said.The names of the displaced people were not immediately available.
Smoke also damaged the restaurant and vacant store, the battalion chief said. The American Red Cross was providing temporary shelter to the four families.
