Giving, Right From The Scalp

Monday, March 10, 2008

Here's how Dick Grabowsky can win back his reputation with the Girl Scouts and do a good deed at the same time. Give up some of his goldilocks to Locks of Love, the organization that makes human-hair wigs for young cancer victims. Glen Ridge scout Kristina Zichelli has sacrificed four ponytails to the cause and is still collecting. And, her mother points out, one of Grabowsky's current tenants, Bangz, will do a Locks of Love cut for free.

Here's Kristina's latest pitch for her Gold Award project:

My name is Kristina Zichelli. I am 17 and I am a senior Girl Scout. I am telling people about Locks of Love for my Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. You can contact me at kristycatcher@aol.com (please put Girl Scouts in the subject line).

I donated my hair for the first time in third grade and it made me feel really good to help someone. It made me feel so good that I made my fourth donation for this hair drive.

Locks of Love uses hair that people donate to make wigs for underprivileged girls who don't have hair because they have a disease.

Donating your hair is a great opportunity to try a new short-hair look.

Locks of Love only needs 10-12 inches of your hair to help someone.

If you donate between Feb. 23 and Mar. 31 and you tell me, you will be invited to a party at Starbucks and win great prizes!

By donating your hair, you are helping me and you are giving a girl the chance to have hair. Plus, you can get cool prizes and go to a party at Starbucks.

To donate, contact me and I will e-mail you a packet of information. After you get your hair cut, put the ponytail in a baggy and staple your form to it. Call me and I will pick it up and give you your invitation to the party.

Hey, Dick. If you do it, we'll show up and take pictures. You couldn't buy publicity like this.

What sick child would want Dick's hair?

BRAVO to Kristina, you are a GREAT example of the youth of today. My older son earned his Eagle several years ago and it still to this day amazes me. You are an inspiration. And hey folks FOCUS on the positive and stop giving press to the guy mentioned within this posting. The story is about the Girl Scout!!!

Posted by Mojo | March 10, 2008 2:03 PM

Yes Bravo Kristina!!!

Unfortunately, as much as I would like to see Dick do some good, you cannot donate hair to locks of love that has color on it...and yes Dick colors his hair. It has to be 100% virgin, untreated hair.

Posted by SB72 | March 10, 2008 2:47 PM

As your PR consultant, Dick, I advise you to go for it. You will be transformed instantly from sinner to saint. (Believe me, if I had any hair, and the Drums of Thunder wanted to cut it...)

I am telling people about Locks of Love for my Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn.

This isn't charity, it's capitalism.

Posted by walleroo | March 10, 2008 2:54 PM

Yes, Kristina, great thing to do.

SB72, the hair can be permed or colored as long as it's not damaged.
It can't be bleached or highlighted.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | March 10, 2008 2:59 PM

Wow Kristina, that's fantastic! I know a couple kids who've done this and I always thought it was a wonderful thing to do, but four times is just astounding. Good for you!

Posted by State Street Pete | March 10, 2008 3:27 PM

Yes, cheers for Kristina. That's an awful lot of hair, though...10-12 inches and she gave 4 times. Her hair must grow very fast.

YA Duck...Being a hairdresser for 20 years I fully know the ins of donating to locks of love as we do it several times a week. Hair that is chemically treated, (especially bleached in Dicks case) dissolves when it goes through the manufacturing process. Hair has to have excellent elasticity to be donated that is permed or color treated.

Posted by SB72 | March 10, 2008 4:11 PM

I suggest you check the web site out SB72 before someone mistaking thinks they can't donate.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | March 10, 2008 4:24 PM

I have checked the website and we get updates frequently from locks of love when rules change. It says on their website you can donate if you have colored treated hair however, we get phone calls telling us what to look for. Hair has to have excellent elasticity if its colored. Im not trying to misinform by no means. Long ago we have had people cut their hair off only for it to be rejected because of its condition. Certain medications can also affect the hair and it cannot be accepted. My recommendation is to always have someone confirm first that it can be donated before you do it. We have locks of love at our salon twice a year doing charity events and work with them one on one on what can be excepted and what cant.

You say:
"you cannot donate hair to locks of love that has color on it."

They say:

Q. Can I donate gray hair?
A. Yes, we can accept donations of gray hair. Because we only provide hairpieces to children, we cannot use this hair in a hairpiece but will sell it to offset our manufacturing costs.

Q. Can I donate colored hair?
A. Yes, we can accept donations of colored hair.

Q. Can I donate permed hair?
A. Yes, we can accept donations of permed hair.

Q. Can I donate bleached hair?
A. No, we cannot use bleached hair. The bleach causes the hair to dissolve as it goes through the manufacturing process. Note: Many times highlights are done with bleach.

I say:
It's a great cause, this is for someome who knows how to give from a young age, the web site is pretty clear.

hair can have a single process, not a double. my daughter donated her hair a few years ago. it was great!

Posted by gia | March 10, 2008 5:59 PM

YA Duck. Why are making this an argument? You obviously are not reading what I am saying. Read my last post. I KNOW IT SAYS YOU CAN DONATE IT....and YES WE HAVE DONATED COLORED HAIR. But trust me I HAVE worked personally with them...the hair needs to be in optimal condition. If its damaged they wont take it. They are not going to sit there on their sit and get all technical. If someone usues store bought box haircolor on their hair, and its has damage to the last 6 inches...chances of them being able to use it are slim. I don't know how many times you have worked doing locks of love in the last 20 years and how much of your time you have donated doing the haircuts for it with locks of love there with you. Bottom line, if its chemically treated and in bad condition it will not stand through the manufacturing process.

Posted by SB72 | March 11, 2008 9:18 AM

YA, why are you so abrasive?

Posted by seventeen | March 11, 2008 1:55 PM

So, instead of yelling at me, since you're so tight with Locks of Love, suggest to them clarifying the FAQ and the video. Since they say you can do it at home, perhaps it should say that if your hair is other than "natural" they may take your donation but only your hair dresser knows for sure, just not to one so loud.
Seventeen! I'm not sure what your referring to, my quoting of the web site or my concern that people might think they can't donate to such a good cause (or according to our shrill friend, cut it off for no reason). At least your confusion of facts is consistent.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | March 11, 2008 4:37 PM

So now you have the ability to assume that I am yelling at you through typed words? Who's yelling at you? Im not. Need to remind you that your very first post to me you even said "SB72 the hair can be colored or permed as long as its not damaged. It can't be hilited or bleached"..... Which Dick Grabowski's is hilited and bleached.

And being that I do work so closely with them, when they receive hair that cannot be used, they sell it to other companies and those monies go towards helping offset the cost of manufacturing the hairpieces. This is a question I asked years ago along with what they do when they receive gray hair as Locks of Love only gives to children and they obviously wont give a child a hairpiece of gray hair. They sell the gray hair as well.

And for the record, in my regards to my comment of "cut it off for no reason", for those that would like to donate but because of the condition of their hair can't, we always encourage them to come to the salon free of charge for deep conditioning treatments to get their hair in optimal shape so that it can be donated to help a child rather than not be used and just sold to another company.

ALL CAPS is considered yelling, SB.
You first post was: "you cannot donate hair to locks of love that has color on it...and yes Dick colors his hair. It has to be 100% virgin, untreated hair." No?
I have had experience with donating hair and went to the web site which stated what I posted, which was my experience.
From there all I did was post the quote directly from the site. Did you respond with "oh, no! I must inform them to be more specific" or did you become a stereotypical hairdresser from a "B" comedy movie?
No assumptions from me, just the facts Mam.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | March 11, 2008 6:15 PM

The caps was for you to not be ignorant and not miss what I was saying. So unless you can see thru computer screens to the other person whom is typing you shouldn't assume. Maybe when you are typing out of anger you use caps..that doesn't mean everyone else does.

And why should I respond with a "oh no I must inform them to be more specific?". Not being able to donate hair because its damaged is common sense and websites shouldn't have to sit there and explain "but not this, not that and definitley not that" for people who sit on web blogs and like to dissect everything everyone says.

If you are open to any advice SB, don't blog. Be the artist you are with your medium, have your artists temperament, have a great time telling the story of what an idiot I am to your customers; but don't blog.

Kristina, I hope your drive is going well, it's much harder than selling cookies to raise money and your donation base is much smaller. I would think door to door is out of the question :). Your awareness campaign is worthy, as is your personal commitment. Keep up the good work.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | March 12, 2008 4:59 AM

Your not an idiot and I find it unprofessional to talk about others to clients. And I will continue to blog because I have the right to do so.
