Now That's Rice

Thursday, March 27, 2008

For Baristavillains of all ages.FreeRice.com is the ultimate feel good website.

It's basically an addictive vocabulary quiz (multiple choice). For each word you get right, they donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. The bowl can fill up surprisingly quickly. If you get it right, you get a harder word. If wrong, you get an easier word.

Where's Cathar? They'll be able to feed the world if he takes the quiz.

I'm sure this is what the Obama's will do considering how little he and Michelle gave to charity.

Oh, wait. WE must change.

Not him.

He's such a mack daddy!

(Sorry for the kinda double post... Although reading it, I was reminded of one of my 90's jams: Return of the Mack!!)

Can't seem to break level 40 but I did donate 2000+ grams. That's fun!

freerice--finally a productive use for 3 years of High School Latin...

Posted by googleaddict | March 27, 2008 5:29 PM

It's a good cause and fun, starts easy but would even befuddle our resident grandiloquent mountebank in time, but look at all the food it would generate.

Posted by Y.A.Duck | March 27, 2008 5:40 PM

I stopped at 3000 grains level 43.

Good one! So long productivity!!

Level 48 but only 1030 grains??? I guess I got there too fast?

Posted by crank | March 27, 2008 7:03 PM

It dawned on me that this is a game that, like much of life, rewards dogged persistence rather than actual knowledge.

Posted by crank | March 27, 2008 7:08 PM

I stopped at 1000 grains of rice, level 56. It also helped several times to know Scottish dialect words. Fun, but I suppose the point is to illustrate just how paltry so many grains of rice really are in terms of feeding capacity. It also reminds me of the beach scene in "Local Hero" where the canny old Scottish beachcomber challenges McIntyre to guess how many grains of sand he has in his hand. Okay, as the chorus of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" goes, "Feed the world, Feed the World!"

And I shall be sure to recommend this game at its very lowest levels to several of my fave posters here (hi, Duckie!). And, naturally, to my dear lasermikey.

Posted by cathar | March 27, 2008 7:29 PM

I love that site. It's evidence for my students that knowing Latin and Greek roots are instrumental in vocabulary building.

And, it's evidence that I am capable of wasting an inordinate amount of time on any given day. At least someone's benefiting from my procrastination.

Posted by Dog Mom | March 27, 2008 8:02 PM

The best I could do when I stopped at 3080 grains was level 46.

Thanks to "Family Guy", I knew what a "quahog" was. And, thanks to cathar, I knew the meaning of the word "screed"!

Posted by Pork Roll | March 27, 2008 8:07 PM

cathar, I'm so glad you caught on to the purpose of the game and you are recommending it. I believe that your inflated ego may have outpaced you usual reconditeness in assuming that my post referenced you, unless you have some need to target certain individuals, to which I cry fowl.
I would say that the trade off to help a charity from just playing card games on your computer during your lunch hour is a definitive positive. Thanks.

Duck, I don't ever play games on computers. Nor do I spend the day playing, as you seem to, "Candyland."

"Reconditeness?" I don't think so, Duckie. Now, off you go to try and get a date for the prom, time's running out.

Gracie, my salutations for your score.

I donated 40 grains of rice. Go Montclair educashun.

Since I keep thinking of that sand scene in "Local Hero," I am curious now how many grains are in your average box of Uncle Ben's.

Perhaps the counting-out process could even be a make-work project for some of our posters. Or for profwilliams' "classes."

I'm keeping a browser window open and doing a bit at a time parsing out my verbal charity throughout the day, so to speak. I laughed out loud when one of my word choices was cathartic. Zoink!

If my words can help serve as an emetic for you, spots, I'm very happy. Just make sure you're properly diapered.

Posted by cathar | March 28, 2008 10:58 AM

cathy, I laughed to myself because I imagined my fellow Baristavillians with substitute definitions for cathartic.

And you're so delusional to believe that we're amused by "your" words? Here's a quarter, go buy a clue.

ah, dictionary.com...cheating for a good cause.

?Since I keep thinking of that sand scene in Local Hero,? ??

My Favorite scene in ?Local Hero? is when the realized they are eating the rabbit that they had rescued and given separate names:

It had a name.
It had two names.
You don?t eat things with names!

Posted by MMM | March 28, 2008 2:20 PM

I suspect, spots (it's in the baseness of your futile attempts at a prose style), that when you "laugh to yourself" you also invariably soil yourself. It's that simple. But y'all keep on posting, y'hear?

Posted by cathar | March 28, 2008 2:25 PM

MMM, I only remember the rabbit being named "Trudy" in "Local Hero." What was its other name?

That you like and rememember this film immediately paints you as someone of class and distinction, I'll add.

I find word games addicting - got up to more than 4000 grains donated and score of 49... At that level, my 2 years of Latin in high school comes in handy for something. Quite the brain teasers...

"'Local Hero.' What was its other name?"

A post on a message board had it as "Trudy (or Harry)". But I will need to rent it to be sure.

I think I have the sound track by Mark Knopfler on vinyl somewhere.

Posted by MMM | March 28, 2008 3:51 PM

A great soundtrack. That's one of my all time favorite cds. Knopfler at his finest and the best bassist ever Tony Levin.

Posted by State Street Pete | March 28, 2008 4:16 PM

One of my favorite Knopfler disks is also one of the hardest to find - 'Miracle' by Willie 'Mink' DeVille. Mark produced it and played guitar on every track.

I have it on vinyl and digitized it a few years ago.

"Spanish Jack" still gives me chills when I think about it.

The title cut "Miracle" is incredible.
