Hands Free Or Hang Up

Friday, March 7, 2008

Are New Jerseyans paying attention to the new cell phone ban? According to reports, NJ state police nailed 150 chatty drivers on insterstates and toll roads last weekend when the ban first took effect. Fines are $100 for the offense. Here in Baristaville, Montclair Chief of Police David Sabagh reported 10 drivers have been pulled over - making for a very expensive phone call. Bloomfield PD is still compiling their stats and couldn't confirm if residents have cut down on multi-tasking at the wheel. (No word either, on the 'Ridgers.)

...Meanwhile, AAA says, it's not cell phones which are the number one driving distraction in the Garden State, it's (gulp) reading. Cell phone use ranks fourth on the list of dangerous driving habits, after Blackberry tapping and personal grooming. Are you guilty?

Oh yes, the erratically driven mini-van on the GSP the other day was operated by someone multi-tasking. Nope, not a map, a paper!

Wait, people seriously read while driving? I mean, trying to read directions is one thing, not that I enjoy when I have to do that. But who thinks it's a good idea to read the paper while driving down the Parkway?
Oh, and I've seen several people still using their cell phones since the law went into effect.

I once saw a guy working out with a 'dumb-bell' on 287 while driving to work.

I've seen tractor trailer drivers reading out on Interstate 80. There wasn't much traffic, so I guess it was relatively safe.

number one distraction while driving is children in the backseat. number two is eating. I think the police should line up outside the drive thru at mcdonalds and ticket all the happy meal eatin brats that want hannah montana blasting on the radio!

Only 150 tickets in the first weekend? Park yourself at an intersection around here and count; whenever I'm sitting at a red light and do it, the average # of people holding phones to their heads is 30%. I wish I could start pulling people over so I could make $100 a clip!

You can start with the cops I'm Me. They're trying to say their use falls under the exception of using the phone to report an emergency. So far it's not holding water, and should not in this age of blue tooth.

Only 10 in Montclair all week? That tells me MPD is ignoring this great new source of revenue. I saw 10 instances this morning alone.

Get to work!

Used to peer into other cars to look at drivers on the Parkway -- but reading, make-up, and cell-phones kept breaking the cool meditative state of mind required to endure the commute.

Now I'm at peace, gently aware of irregular speeds and weaves.

Drag racers still get my undivided attention.

Walter Mitty posted: "A good source of revenue".

I don't think Montclair sees any revenue from the cellphone tickets. I'm pretty sure almost all of that goes directly to the state, and Governor Tollzine.

Really, I am more concerned about the assholes in this town who do not yield to pedestrians, and those who just don't stop at stop signs.

In addition, we have our Keystone Cops sitting at courners talking on their cells phones while the drivers fail to stop.

Must be too much mustard in the ass to pursue a traffic violation!

And the state doesn't need that revenue?

Really, I can't remember the last time New Jersey or anywhere else passed a law that I agree with as much as this one.

I'd like to see a $1500 fine.

I am so with you, Walter Mitty! Only 10? is right! More proof to me that the police around here are just not up to snuff. And, yes, I think the fine should be higher and it can all go right to the state where it's needed. If only there could be a law passed on politeness while using cell phones -- the state would be in the green in no time -- and people might finally learn how to conduct themselves in public.

Inattention reigns.
45% are chatting away on the cell.

20% are fiddling with their Navagation System.

18% are searching for a different C.D. to insert.

6% are looking for a certain cassette.

11% are driving correctly & enjoying their car, which is about to get damaged by a member of the other 89%.

And yet, Laura Loonie, you can rest assured that if you ever awoke to find a burglar looking in your back window, all you have to do is call 911 and every one of those Keystone Cops would race to your house, and if need be, put their lives on the line to help you.
